Curves Gym - is it worth it to join?

I am thinking of joining the Curves gym in my neighborhood. Does anyone have experience with this chain of gyms?

I have never had a gym routine, I am 100% inactive right now, and I am really intimidated to go to a regular gym.

    Any experiences with Curves appreciated...

    Thanks

Anyone with an opinion on the facilities, the program, or the weight-loss results?

I remember looking into them at one point when I was surveying gyms to join. The one thing I wasn't crazy about was the hours. Like on Saturdays and sundays closing at 2 PM? and 8 PM being the latest hour on other days. So to me, it just didn't make much sense since flexibilitity of hours is very important to me. Although, if you're feeling apprehensive about going to a mixed gender gym, I say it's better than nothing, to at least get you started and moving. At least you won't experience the "i kind of look yucky today, so i think i'll skip today's workout" thing. Kind of defeats the purpose.

ETA: I checked the Curves website and they have a free week deal thing for many locations. Maybe check into that. Hopefully the salespeople won't hound you though, and will actually let you work out.

Jeeeez. But anyway, it's a pointless gym IMO. It's only useful if you have some religious problems with being at a gym near men, or if you're REALLY (and I mean reallyreally) out of shape. There are very minimal exercise machines and the whole place is geared for "simple, quick, easy" workouts, which IMO at your age you should be able to be in a gym that can offer you more than that.

They suck as a business and as a gym, personally. Fitness First or Bally's or a chain where you have to put up with annoying men (I swear this is what MP3 players were invented FOR) is MUCH more worth it. Curves also tends to be condensending and motherly, like, 'c'mon little girl, you can lift that last weight, teehee!' approach, which rubbed me entirely the wrong way as a former bodybuilder. I did NOT learn to deadlift 350 to have some snarky bitch tell me only the little weights are for the little girls. Aside from their anti-abortion stance, they have very few machines, and the ones they have aren't that good, plus they treat you like a poor widdle fat chick needs a diiiet awww, and they have terrible hours.

It's great for someone who has never attended a true gym before. After I joined Weight Watchers and lost over 20 pounds I plateaued at 133. I felt insecure about going to a gym because first of all I felt self-conscious about my body and secondly I didn't know what to do at one. I admit there are mostly middle aged to older women attending but it was motivating for me because they keep record of your progress and inches lost. After about 5 months there I lost 22 additional lbs. and like 20 inches off my body total. Also, I found that the circuit training routine kept me on track and focused which tends to be a weakness of mine. Give it a try...

As a former personal trainer/aerobics instructor, I can tell you that you're wasting your money. Circuit machines are KNOWN for not giving results. Gyms have them because most women are afraid of free weights. Honestly, free weights are the weights that will give you real muscle tone. If you want to see how good a gym is, go sit in the parking lot and watch the people that come in and out. If you are impressed with the vast majority of the people that are there, then go in and look around.

From my experience, Curves, Women's Workout World, and the gym like them cater to fat, lazy women who want to feel like they're doing something. Never mind that the workouts that they are doing are ineffective and they will see little results. Some women will see major changes...but they are few and far between.

I would suggest hitting a gym that has REAL weights. I used to work out in a Gold's Gym type of place with hardcore weightlifters...and let me tell you...they don't spend their time oogling you. They are there for one reason and one reason only...and that's nice. I've made great weightlifting buddies with guys from that gym because they would spot me if I needed someone and Joe wasn't around. They also gave me tips for more effective results.

Skip the pansy gyms. If you're going to shell out any cash, go find a real gym.

I can second for Fitness First. They're one of my favorite operations for both the hours, pricing, as well as access to other gyms. Typical hours of closing are 11 or 10 and I was paying about $33/ month for a membership (no contract either, could stop any time). For a gym, that is an awesome price! And I could go to any of the locations in state. If I remember correctly, it cost me $5 or $10 extra (per month) to extend my membership to one other state as well.

Also, I don't know if you have a YMCA near you, but this was another one of my favorite gyms. It wasn't the ritz or anything, but had all the equipment I needed, hours were fairly decent, except Sundays I think were 6 PM. And was mostly older people, and the ones that were younger weren't the type that would bring an overly meat market feel to the place. They were all kind of like me, just wanted to come in, work out, and get into their own little zone. I loved it.

Gold's is good, equipment wise, but their plans blow, in my opinion. I'm not going to sign up for a 6 or 12 month plan, period. Personally, I like my YMCA. They're open from 5 a.m-10 p.m. during the week. Works for me. Plus they have a pool. They have everything I need, and you can pay on a month-to-month, cancel anytime basis. That's what got me. $35 a month, cancel anytime.

Nooooooooooooooooo! I hate Curves! It's a fad gym.

Join a gym with fun classes so you can be motivated and not bored!

I wouldn't go to a Curves. The people they staff them with aren't even fitness professionals.

I agree with Sohpia, find a gym with classes you enjoy going to. I didn't start getting into the gym thing until I discovered yoga, which isn't 'haha' fun, but I really loved it and it made me feel great. So I started working out and going to yoga to sort of wind down and get a good stretch in.

Yeah.... maybe it's the ADD... I need constant stimulation to be motivated. I like that I can do pole dance, yoga, pilates, fabric (cirque du soliel style), and pole dance again. in one week.

I know a girl who owns a couple of them. I went up to one of her stores and she had me try out the circuit. It certainly worked me out because you are using as much force and strength as you can, with those pneumatic air machines. Its not impossible to get a decent cardio workout there with a little bit of resistance. But she is always closing up her shop early, and the place has a "cult-like" feel, if that makes sense.

242, not to be a broken record, but perhaps you can check out a full-service gym that provides a few free personal training sessions with membership.

well it sounds like it's convenient because it's in her neighborhood and she says she's intimidated by a regular gym. Maybe join for a month or two then upgrade to a regular gym?

I see alot of deleted messages and read them...please be nice. I tried to clean up the thread. An opinion is fine but not attacking others.

    Thanks.

I'm actually having this dilemma right now. I want somewhere close to my house, so its either Curves or the "social club" type place. I have a feeling that Curves is lacking on cardio machines

Curves as a gym is rather sucky, IMO. It's good for beginners, but people plateau fast and stop seeing results. Is there a YMCA nearby? Those are usually pretty good... and cheap.
