Graveyard shift be listed as 'probable' cause of cancer

    By Maria Cheng
    AP Medical Writer / November 30, 2007
LONDON—Like UV rays and diesel exhaust fumes, working the graveyard shift will soon be listed as a "probable" cause of cancer.
It is a surprising step validating a concept once considered wacky. And it is based on research that finds higher rates of breast and prostate cancer among women and men whose work day starts after dark.

Next month, the International Agency for Research on Cancer, the cancer arm of the World Health Organization, will add overnight shift work as a probable carcinogen.

Why did this take so long to make headlines? I saw the studies on this subject years ago.

Agreed. Everything causes cancer. 1 in 3 women will have cancer in their life. We live in a toxic environment, eat toxic food and live sedentary lives tethered to a computer or t.v. And, somehow, we're surprised that any of this causes cancer.

No kidding. Everything gives you some type of cancer, so you might as well not even worry about it.

Saw this one the news this morning. It seems like anything you do will cause cancer...so I"m just going to keep living my life how I live it.

Hmm. I have a slight suspicion that people that work graveyard are more likely to eat bad food and not exercise.

exactly. i think it has less to do with actual working hours, and more to do with lifestyle choices.

i think there's some truth to it, beyond just the effect it has on diet and exercise.

especially with recent health headlines about the benefits of sun exposure.

but i also think that some people are just made to be night people, and that it isn't bad for them. unfortunately, not all night people are able to work night jobs and many night jobs attract people who'd rather sleep at night.

Exactly, not working out...eating Jack in the box for breakfast, lunch and dinner....

Everything gives you cancer these days.

You know what.. I heard this on the news the other morning, and it irritated the hell out of me. A slight correlation is not grounds for saying that working nights "probably" causes cancer. This is another example of the media taking something insignificant and running with it. And because the average person is so freaking dumb, they won't take a second to analyze the media and the grounds of the reports.

    ugh.
