    I don't comprehend being broke.

First off this isn't meant to sound derogatory or degrading whatsoever..

I'm watching an old episode of MTV's True Life about young adults who are out on their own and broke. There are 2 different ladies both of whom are reasonably attractive and they are stressed out about money and one is about to be homeless. The other works at a restaurant and lives in a trailer with 4 other people and only eats once a day.

The whole time I've been saying to myself, "why don't you just become a stripper?".

I feel bad for them, but I'm sitting here in my 2 story house in the historic district, my expensive Coach bag next to me, my car outside is fully paid off, I never have to worry about mortgage payments or food being in the refrigerator. Not that I'm being show-offy or trying to be materialistic, I'm extremely thankful for everything I have and work my ass off for it (so does my husband) but I just don't comprehend people living with all that stress when they don't have to.

    Opinions? Flaming? Anything?

if every broke, pretty girl became a stripper, you wouldn't have the luxuries you have.

Exactly. And not every broke, pretty girl can handle this industry either.

I wonder if I'm the only girl who became a dancer because I wanted to dress up, feel sexy, have guys fawn over me and just to get on that stage and feel powerful? Does every girl but me become a stripper just because that's the last resort and she's broke?

    VERY good point.

And being a stripper doesnt always = mad cash. I'm pretty damn broke at the moment...my club has been dead AND I'm burnt out. So I'm not making much..I'm actually behind on my bills right now..forget Coach purses.

BUT..I know that all it will take is one or two good nights or a few shoots to turn it all aroud....thats the differance in this biz. Plus we have the option(if not always the means) to travel to where money is better and work the day we get into town.

But not every woman can or wants to be a stripper. Some would rather starve then get naked for strangers either out of personal morals or for being unbearingly shy. Not every girl has the balls....you have to have a thick skin and a confident attitude to put up with all the crap we put up with...thats the trade off to the potential to make big money.

A girl who gives blow jobs in the champagne room might look at you on a night you arent making anything and complaining about money(you in general as a dancer...not YOU the OP) and wonder the same thing..."why doesnt she just give a cpl blow jobs? Then she wouldnt be broke"....every person has their own personal boundries on what they are and arent comfortable doing for money.

A LOT of women draw the line at stripping. Nothig wrong with that(as long as they arent being uppity judgemental bitches about those of us who do striP!LOL)

Nope. I did too. The money was secondary.

There are thousands of people out there that don't strip, that don't have to live with four other people and eat once a day. That's just bad money management there.

I kinda feel this way sometimes. Although my story is a little different, I became a stripper because I like strip clubs. I used to go in and get dances and I love the environment. That's one of my selling points: I do this because I want to, not because I have to.

I felt like that in the beginning when i couldnt fucking wait to get to work because it was all a big party I made a ton of cash for being at. I LOVED stripping and did it BECAUSE I loved it

Now when I pry grandpas finger out of my panties and go home with $50. Not so much fun...I want the damn money.

What's ironic is that I STARTED stripping for the fun of it. However, now I too do it for the money. Which has been horribly shitty lately. I started as not needing the money now I'm a broke stripper. WTF???

I've been broke. It sucks. i appreciate all the things stripping can give me more, because I've been on the other side, lived it and felt it.

I save my money almost compulsively because I remember the fear that comes from being without.

What happened to THAT? I'm holding up my end of the deal and getting naked...where are my freakin' Benjamins???

I think there's a small percentage of women who can handle being exotic dancers. There are a lot who are currently working in clubs that don't belong there, and won't last long. And Emily has a fantastic point. A saturated strip club nation is not what we want to make bank.

I am sure Paris Hilton would look at you and say she can't comprehend having as little money as you do...it's all in perception.

If you don't, count yourself lucky and move on; don't judge these people and say that's bad money management. Maybe it is, maybe it isn't. You never truly know the full story unless you're living it.

Dancing is not a profession that suits everyone.

Thinking about the London (UK) dancers I know, the great majority [I'll guess at 80 - 90%] seem to be in it long term. Most seem to have been dancing for 5 years or so (sometimes longer).

You seem to get girls coming into the profession, trying it for a few months, then deciding it's not for them. Too stressful, too much contact, not comfortable with the nudity or whatever.

Long exposure to stripping/nudity tends to make you ladies very blasse about dancing, in effect you become 'conditioned' to the nudity and treat it lightly. Yet, anyone thinking about becoming a dancer is not likely to be so laid back about it.

Firstly, it requires the ability to get naked every night in front of strangers - and most people have a nudity inhibition. Secondly, it requires the ability to hustle - in effect to convince a stranger you might dislike at first sight that you have taken a bit of a liking to him. Finally, it also requires an ability to mentally divorce yourself from what you do - else you end up stressed out by the job.

For those reasons, I'd guess relatively few girls have the mindset that'll let them be sucessful dancing.

I'll guess Greater London, with a population of 8 million supports less than 1,000 dancers. If we said that about 1,000,000 women were of an age (and prettiness) to dance, that makes it about 0.1% of them suited to dancing long term.

I agree with the OP. I would do whatever it takes to survive in this world. Not just survive, but to excel. I've also been given lots of gifts. Intelligence, drive, parents who supported me getting educatede and encouraged me to delve into many areas of life. Not everyone is willing to do that. Why do you think illegal immigrants are here doing grunt work? Because they are willing to do what it takes to improve their lives, and the lives of their families.

Well, there's a huge stigma regarding stripping. Many pretty, fit young women wouldn't venture into a strip club even if there were desperate because they imagine it involves: "losing your soul"/being raped/being strung out all the time etc. And they'd rather be broke than risk that.

Not every pretty girl has what it takes to strip.

Clearly the girls in the True Life episode were either morally opposed to dancing naked, didn't have the mentality, or just didn't want to.

It's not the right solution for everyone.
