Default I need a kitty expert!

My parents went out of town for the weekend and I'm kitty sitting. They dropped her off while I was in class this morning and I can't find her anywhere! I've been doing the "psss pssss psss" thing and I put out a plate of cat food and tuna, then I went shopping for a few hours (so the house would be quiet) and came home and it's untouched. I know she's just scared, but I really want to spend some time with her before they pick her up. Any ideas on how to get her to come out of hiding?

It's one of those things that she'll come out when she's ready. If you force it, she'll be a ball of claws and fury.

Exactly. You cannot force a cat to do ANYTHING, which is apart of their charm to me. Do you know where she's hiding? Maybe you can grab a shoelace or something to entice her to come out and play.

Just look for her and when you find her, keep a comforting distance and talk to her in a soothing voice using her name. Find some things that might interest her to show her to her face - the can of tuna or like Sarah said, a shoelace, and see if she wants to indulge. If she doesn't, then she's just stressed and wants to be alone.

Cats like to find little hidey holes when they are in new places and feeling nervous. Don't take it purrrrrsonally. (Alright, that was gay. I had to do it though.)

P.S. If I try to make gabby do something she doesn't want to do. Sometimes? She barfs. Watch out.

    LOL!

She's scared and trying to adjust to her new environment. My Siamese always hides when I bring someone over, but she warms up and will come out on her own.

Avoid eye contact too and she'll warm up faster.

She's probably under the bed and won't come out for hours. When she does, just dont make any sudden movements. Use your kitty voice to reassure her. Let her come to you and let her smell your hand before you try to pet her.

Thanks! Pooka, that was too cute My dad always entered pun contests so you now have a soft spot in my heart! I have no clue where she is and there are a ton of hiding spots in this house. Should I try to be quiet to make her feel safer?

Yeah if shes a skittish kitty it will be best to keep quiet.

Hopefully she didn't run out the door when you didnt see or anything?

Just let her hide. Make sure there's fresh food where she can get to it when she wants, and make sure she has access to the litterbox (no closed doors or anything). She'll come out when she's hungry and when she needs to use the bathroom, but if she wants to hide the rest of the time, just let her.

Nah, I've been super careful with the doors. My mom called this morning and said they were dropping her off so I've been on kitty door alert all day.

Like everyone else said already, don't worry about it too much. When I moved out of my parent's house and on to my man's boat I brought my cat with me and I couldn't find her for days. I cried and cried..calling out her name countless times freaking out she was hurt and stuck somewhere unsafe.

There was a lot of small hiding places she loved. One was underneath the couch cushion (storage area underneath). It was small, dark and quiet under there so I guess that's why she liked that. She also hid underneath the stairs in another storage area which was very dark and quiet back there too.

I kept checking up on her, using a very soothing voice, slowly blinking and not staring at her at all also letting her see that I had food and water for her. She came out at night while we were sleeping and all was quiet. She lost a little bit of weight but other than that she was okay in the end.

Ya know what...she did run out the door at one point I'm guessing while we were sleeping. My mom called me the next day letting me know my cat was back at their house hiding underneath their house!! She knew her way home exactly. I was in such shock. She walked like 2-3 miles from our new place all the way back home. I went back to my mom's and called for her and she came running over meowing/purring like crazy like begging me if she could stay here instead of the boat lol

My sister's cat loves hiding behind the washer and dryer and inside cabinets (yep, he opens them himself!).

You'll probably wake up in the middle of the night with her snuggled up with you...I had a friend who's skittish cat would always do that to me!

In this case maybe its good that shes a scaredy cat. You dont want an overly friendly kitty to run across your brand new boobs in the middle of the night like mine did! Ouch that hurt!!!

Go to Bark and Purr and buy some kitty hooch catnip. Its the freshest, dankest 'nip EVER. I don't know of a single cat that doesn't go nuts over it. Although they've been out of stock the last few times I've been there.

Hooray!! I set some clean clothes out on the bed because I'm going out tonight with no kitty in sight. About an hour later I walked in there and she was all sprawled out on my outfit! So if you go out tonight and see a chick with siamese hair all over her clothes, don't be shy

Yepp. Only come out of hiding when it's absolutely necessary, like when your clean clothes need a good coat of fur.

My cats are the same. All cats are the same. Before work in the morning, I will lay out business clothes onto the bed. A cat will be all over it within 2 minutes flat. Preferably the black one, since most of my stuff is dark.

What was that quote, I think I read it here in fact...

Cats and women will do as they please, dogs and men should get used to the idea.

Robert A. Heinlein wrote that in the novel Glory Road.
