    Default N. Americans and alcohol

My grandma (Native American) told me a long time ago that we have something in our blood that makes us reeeeally mean and crazy when we drink liqor. I get so extremely violent and crazy when I get drunk. I can't just catch a buzz from alcohol...If I drink hard stuff, I get CRAZY. I mean crazy as in I will un-conciously attack your ass.

Any other ladies who are Native American or partially N.A who can relate? What's with the whole "Native Americans can't drink" stereotype? What is it about us that makes us psycho when we drink?

There's something in some peoples brains that makes them process alcohol the way other people process (cocaine? PCP? I forget). Not all native americans have it, but it does occur more often in native americans.

The "alcoholic" gene probably just got passed through the generations in a lot of N.A. families.

How long ago and do you remember more specifically what? I just searched MEDLINE and found nothing, which is unusual. Usually there is something.
Been a while since I looked into this, but there appear to be some clear genetic differences between how Native American metabolize booze,:

    From:
Genetic Influences on Alcohol Drinking and Alcoholism

"The quest for genes that influence alcohol abuse follows two paths. One goal is to locate genes that predispose a person to alcoholism. The other is to identify genes that help to prevent this from happening. Li and his coworkers have made important advances in this latter category. "We have identified two genes that protect against heavy drinking, and these are particularly prevalent among Asians," Li says. "We have shown that Native Americans, who have a high rate of alcoholism, do not have these protective genes. The one that is particularly effective is a mutation of the gene for the enzyme aldehyde dehydrogenase, which plays a major role in metabolizing alcohol.

I remember hearing a theory that goes something like this: Alcohol was introduced by Europeans who had literally been drinking it for thousands of years, and had thus built up tolerance or 'resistance' to it over many, many generations, while Native Americans had never been exposed to it before and were therefore much more vulnerable to its effects.

Just a theory, a vague one at that, that I recall from years ago.

I recently learned that different ethnic groups process different foods (including alcohol) differently because of enzymes that are (or are NOT) precent.

Supposedly the Irish have a liver enzyme that affects how alcohol is processed in their bodies. someone who's predominantly Irish is supposed to be able to process alcohol more easily than -- in this case, a Native American.

So maybe people who are predominantly Native American simply don't have the necessary enzymes to process CERTAIN alcohols. I can see that making sense.

I can drink Tequila like water and it doesn't affect me at all. I can't even get "nice" off of it. But 3 shots of rum knock me out. Literally. I'm African-American predominantly. I have no idea if that's an African-American thing or what.

Well, I'm Irish, Italian and a little bit Native American and I can't drink for shit. Vodka makes me crazy nasty, tequila makes my clothes fall off, rum gives me a headache, wine and champagne make me sleepy etc. And these effects take place after about 2 drinks.

I can, however, bang back sake like there's no tomorrow with little effect save the goofiness. Go figure...

Note to self: 1) Invent cocktail of equal parts tequila and sake. Call it the "Naked Goofy". Get sued by Disney and change it to "Naked Goofball". 2) Invite Dylan over. 3) Naked goofball hijinks ensue.

Not when I was drunk. ::whistle:: I was doing that during the stripper walk tour of NYC!

I wasn't all that bad that night, believe it or not. And I'm a pretty new-to-life drinker. But that whole evening was a complete blast.

I'm call BS on this one. I really do remember you singing and dancing at that cool bar Rose took us to. Maybe it's just YOU that doesn't remember.

And yes, that was a blast. From upscale lounge, to trendy dinner spot, to down and dirty cowgirl bar, we ran the gamut and I was so sorry to see it end.

I used to wander off when I was drunk. Like either get mad at someone or be gabbing on my cell phone to someone and just walk away from parties and stuff, usually trying to walk home. One time when I was at Texas Tech, I walked out of a party without my coat, and I was fuuuuucked up. My roommates found me on campus crying about breaking up w/ my boyfriend and all cut up from walking through bushes with thorns on them. I don't remember much of it, but I never drank anything with Everclear ever again.

Everclear is a four letter word to me. Bleh. One bad jello shot experience ruined it for me, I've since switched over to Goldschlager. There's no need to tell me I'm hardcore, I already know.

I used to work with a Mohawk guy in a factory. He was a brilliant ironworker, but he was a major alcoholic, true to the stereotype, as was the rest of his family. There is something to the genetic argument in this regard.

Thank God I only had 1 glass of champagne and 1 drink waaaay later at SFNYC or you would have seen it all firsthand.
It's OK; I'm pretty sure I poured enough Grey Goose down my throat that night to make up for the both of you.

    Good times...should be repeated.
