Default Q About Dying Dark Hair and Breakage

So, I have really dark brown hair naturally. I've only gotten it highlighted blonde once in my life and it was damaging but maybe not that horrible? Hurt my scalp though. Not sure on why?

I'm thinking about dying my hair again though. I'm thinking about making it a darker read and super light blonde. I'm just really worried about breakage! I talked to a stylist and she said it'd prob be pretty bad. My hair breaks fairly often already. Super laaame. Is that normal??

My best thoughts so far are to get my hair layered and get a really short layer on the top and just have that blonde. If only the short part is dyed like that maybe it won't really break so much? Other thought would be to get strawberry blonde instead maybe with a few chunks of blonde blonde.

Also, it'll only be the top back layer. Underneath I want it all red. Ugh, here's pics!

I want to go from this:

    To this, pretty much EXACTLY:

The hairstylist also said I shouldn't ever really blowdry or straighten my hair anymore if I do this. Not even cool! So anyways, does anyone perhaps know from experience or have any ideas? I'm really wanting a change, but I don't wanna spend all that money just to end up hating the condition of my hair later. Thanks everybody!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i'm sorry to say but i think your hairstylist is right.

that girl in the picture probably has damaged hair... it kind of looks ratty/dead on the ends.

if you really want blonde, i'd say do it in shifts. like, lighten it every month or every two months. not all at once.

and short hair or not, if it's damaged there will be breakage.

Yea, my stylist said she'd prob have to do it in shifts to get it that light and not break it all off. And if you look at the girls pic at the shorter blonde layer, my stylist said that that's not layered hair, it all just broke off the poor girl. =/ So all in all, I want it, but I don't at the same time. Grrr......

She's wearing extensions. Look at the back of her head, see the darker auburn towards the nape of the neck, that's her real hair. The rest appears to be a combination of a weft on the bottom for the cranberry red. And maybe some individuals for the coppery orange pieces. As for the top blonde layer, I'm still trying to decide if that's her top layer of hair colored blonde, but being propped up with some tools for the volume. Or if that's a fallpiece with a choppy cut to get that popular mullet punk look going on these days.

Now as for your color, you said you've only ever highlighted it once and that's it? You let it grow out or colored over it? If that was the only processing you've ever done to it, you are one lucky girl, because your hair is so much better shape than most people's, thus being a lot easier to predict the results. Most people run into trouble, when they have coloring/processing over other coloring/processing, because that can really change the outcome!

You totally have the right idea though about trying to exercise caution, because you're hair might be virginal but still prone to breakage/damage. Anytime you lift your color up/bleach you will experience some damage. Especially bleaching. In your case, to get that light of a blonde, you will need to use bleach. Photos are kind of hard to judge, but it looks like maybe your hair is a level 4 I think? Without bleach, you could maybe only lift about 4 levels maximum giving you a level 8. Even then it will pull a bunch of orangish tones, not blonde.
That blonde looks about a level 10, which will require bleach or a high lift blonde product, = more damage to your hair.

The red itself shouldn't be too much of a problem, plus your hair is darker and not processed now, so it will hold red better than a lot of previously bleached blondes who go red. But even still it can be a hard color to hold and keep that bright, unless you use a color depositing shampoo. But if you're going to go blonde up top, you're going to have to be extra careful not to get the color shampoo on the blonde pieces, or you might turn them pink from the leakage.

Another thought would be henna for the bright intense red bottom layer. This is how a lot of people get that shiny rich red that actually stays better than regular color. And then use regular color/bleach processing for the blonde up top. but you absolutely cannot, cannot, cannot do henna over regularly colored hair or color/bleach over henna'd hair. It might turn your hair green. You have to let it completely grow out on it's own, so be ready for roots if you decide to change later on. But if you're doing two different block layers, I know of some who have processed the layers separately and had good results.
Anywho, this is a lot of typing. let me give you some linkage to some good resources to check out.

HairBoutique.com Hair color board - especially check out the Haircoloring introduction to hair color sticky thread, there's some awesome info in there that breaks down the whole science of levels, amount of lift, and toning, etc....

Henna For Hair - this link will take you to their mix page, the site also sells the henna once you figure out what specific ingredients you need, their henna is one of the best for your hair, trust me don't pickup any random henna, not all hennas are made alike, the one at Sally's...junk

These are just ideas though and I think you're doing the right thing in going to a stylist. They can best figure out the best option for you.

my hair is dark like yours and I went blond once and man my hair felt like STRAW! That does look cool though. You'd probably want to use some kind of leave in treatment to counteract the damage. And if you can't blow dry or flat iron anymore another option is to air dry, then use those huge gigantic velcro rollers for a bit. They help make the hair look smoother and provide volume at the crown without really adding any curl. I'm not sure if velcro rollers would be damaging though.

Yea i agree with one other poster, you can see some extensions. The top of her head, well that is short so it's bleached to hell (like mine) but it's razored. It looks skunky to me.

A big no no is too short top and very long in the back....which is what i have now...fucking salons, that is why i never went. Never will again.

You have very pretty hair. What your hairstylist said about heat treating your hair and breakage is true. I am a dark brunette to bleach blond. It will be like straw no matter what- only worse if you blow dry and iron it. But so what? Its not permanent. If you don't like it you will have to cut it off but hair grows back. If you want to change it, I say change it.

I will tell you I started making more money when I went blond. I think because its easier to see in a dark club.

As a stylist, I would never garuantee I could get you hair that light without serious damage. Then I'd make you sign a waiver.

If you decide to go through with it, do some protein treatments before and after your color services. Redken's CAT treatment and if your salon offers Redken's CHemistry System, have that done in the salon immediately before and after your color service. Don't fuck with deep conditioners, hydrators, or masks... if you don't pump your hair full of protein before heavy decolorizing, and again afterwards, you will have severe damage and possibly a lot of breakage.

You're in Phx right? Go to Andrea at Toni & Guy at Chandler Mall. She is fantastic. You can see on my myspace page how light she got my hair. She's the only person I trust with my hair for drastic changes.

I also took excellent care of my hair when I had it so light. I was very gentle on it, bought an excellent blowdryer, and only styled on work days when I had to. My hair remained long and healthy throughout all my coloring and still is.

I would think long and hard about it tho. That's pretty drastic and what if you hate it? You can also expect some high maintenance up keep.

I would get a consult from my girl Andrea before doing anything.

Definitely take it slow, other than that I think it been covered. But I just wanted to say I really like the look you are going for. Very cute, and you have beautiful long hair as well.
