    Default Hair fading

I knew my har would fade quickly. It has faded from that gorgeous rich deep color to a rust red. Looks terrible. I figured that would happen because my blonde just soaked up the red color. I have an appt. to get my hair recolored on Tuesday, ad I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions to keep it from fading so quickly next time?
I tried thoes color glazes, John Frieda and I also bought Sunsilk Brunette stuff...but problem with thoes is it ruined my highlights so I can't really use any color depositing wash.

I recently talked to my stylist about dying my hair from dark brown to red. She said if I were to do so, I'd have to use a REALLY good, expensive shampoo to maintain the color. Otherwise, according to her, it would fade super quick. So maybe that's the key??

Same thing happened to me, was a pain in my arse. Although the more depositing of red you do on your hair, the better it will stick each time you redeposit over. But how many times it takes till it "sticks" can vary for different people.

I use Bumble and Bumble. Does shampoo get any more expensive than that? Even if it does..I sure as hell can't afford it. This shampoo and conditioner $40 each. Thank god it last a long time.

I wonder if I need to use special shampoo fomulated for colored hair. Currently, I use the seaweed shampoo ad conditioner.

That's true because this time when she colos, she won't be cooring over vlonde, she will be coloring over red so it shouldn't fade as quickly...right?

You definitely need to be using a color safe shampoo and conditioner. I am dark brown almost black and dye my hair dark red with golden highlights. I have reciently found redkin color safe products to work well. They are especially good for when you are using a red dye. they come in red bottles too if that helps
I haven't faded too bad since using them.

Even if you use colorsafe, it will fade. I've been red many times, many years. My advice:

    1. Arctec naturals color depositing shampoo. They have many shades of red. Its not just colorsafe, it actually will put some color into your hair. But it will still fade, because it is red. This is the best stuff I've ever used, and its cheaper than B&B.

    2. Try out a veggie dye color, like manic panic. Its not too damaging to the hair and really infuses it with color. Again, it will still fade.

Red takes a lot of work....

Kaylinn-When I used to dye my hair dark red (almost a burgandy), I had the exact same fading issue. What really worked for me was a color enhancing conditioner. I would use it a few times a week and it really helped me to maintain the color between salon visits. Also, I only shampooed my hair every other day (or less). So, when in the shower, I would shampoo, then apply the conditioner (I used ALOT!!) and put on a shower cap and then wash my body, shave, do whatever I had to do in the shower and then rinse my hair very last.

I used Bio Silk Tone and Shine, and I swear it was awesome!!

Beware, though, that the color will come off a little on your towels and may stain/discolor your fingernails!!

^ Will that affect my highlights?
My hair color is really deep redish bornw..it almost looks plum colored.
The highglights are very light blonde, the color blonde my hair used to be.

I tried a color depositing conditioner and it ruined my highlights. They dissappeared. SO I'm worried that will happen again if I use a dark color depositing conditioner.

Kaylin your colour sounds very eat-able! Lol...SEXY! I have only seens a few ladies with that colour. Wow i have no idea what would not cover that blonde if you deposit colour conditioner. Can you just call a salon and ask advice? Actually ask a few salons, see what they say.

Sounds like a sexy colour combo to me

How often do you shampoo? With color like that, I'd say 1-2 times a week maximum is all you should be washing if you want to keep your color. I was red for a long time and that was the key to keeping it.

Red is ridiculously hard to hold. Before I went chemical free I was doing it every four weeks.

If you really love the red and don't mind doing something permanent to it (and I do mean permanent) you should look into henna. I love it, it never fades, it has no chemicals, and it makes your hair thicker, fuller, and more damage resistant.

    I forgot about your highlights!!

Well, then you're probably best just cutting down on washing (including getting it wet) and going to the salon more often to keep your color looking fresh and vibrant.

    ^Thanks.

    Well, fuck.
I only wash my hair every 3 days. It can't go longer than that. I guess my only option is going to the salon more often. It's so expensive tho. Hopefully this time will last longer than last time since my hair has a dark base now.
Although I will buy a shampoo and conditioner for colored hair, maybe that will help.

^^^ did you're stylist "fill" your hair before you ended up with your red? Do you recall having several applications of color at the salon to go from blonde to red? Altough red is a bitch to keep vibrant, it's going to be even worse if the hair wasn't properly filled.

For an excellent color shampoo and conditioner, go with Pureology. I was a die hard Redken slut, but the Pureology line is fantastic! All of it is formulated for color retention but you also have the added bonus of a hydrating line for dry hair, a smoothing line for frizzy/regularly heat straightened hair, a volumizing line, and a luxury "anti-aging" line... the last one is hella expensive ($50 each) but it is impressive. I use that 1-2 times a week and the Volumizing shampoo and conditioner the rest of the time. It is the only line I've used where I barely see anny pink rinse down the drain after I have my hair colored a deep, rich copper mahogany and the only volumizing line that is actually safe for color treated hair.

I didn't realize there are blonde highlights. Scrap my advice then, sorries.

If you mix special FX dye with aphogee protein reconstructor (the kind you only do once every six weeks..it's real liquidy) and leave that in your hair overnight with some plastic wrap and a towel, it will stick for a looooong time (I used a fuschia dye). I did that on some highlights (bleached, ie damaged hair) and eight months later, I *still* have the color. Just separate out your highlights with foil or something so they don't get dyed. The color will run out the first few times you wash but it has good staying power, I think.

No, they didn't fill my hair. She just put the red/brunette on over the blonde.
    Thanks for the suggestions!

Shampoo/Conditioner for colored hair, wash sparingly (sounds like you're already doing that). Also, don't wash your hair in hot water. Use cool water when you wash/condition it, as hot water will cause the color to fade alot faster.

Kaylinn--Do you tan? The rays in the tanning beds can cause your color to fade. If you're tanning, make sure to cover your hair with a towel.

I like Aveda's color conserve or Redkins color conserve as well. Neither of them have faded my color like all the other shampoos & conditioners have. I even convinced my mom and now she's using them. Before she always bought the cheap stuff at the store like Dove because she didn't believe there was a difference, I gave her some of mine and now that's all she uses.
