Default how to claw my way into a bartending/cocktailing job?

How do you manage to land a bartending and/or cocktailing job in a big money club when there are 234753492576 other people applying?

Especially if you don't know anyone there (a.k.a. can't use nepotism to sneak your way in?) There have got to be other ways to stand out and increase your chances. What are they? I'm hot and I have experience, but I'm sure most of the other applicants have that going for them too.

Ugh. The only places where you can make nearly stripper money behind the bar are ridiculously hard to get into, never mind getting good shifts. It's so fucking frustrating to know that every time you apply you're up against 475263478953 other girls. All that fucking competition just to be able to make an above-average living pouring drinks.

Do you have any other experience? I found that the bars I worked at liked that I had business experience; they felt it was better when serving/talking to the traveling salespeople.

How about flair? Do you do any of that? You know, tossing bottles and such?

    I'll keep thinking about it.

ETA: Oh and if you're hot, how about making a head shot resume? Those went straight to the top of the pile when I was managing.

I was a night club bartender before I was a dancer (before I was in the military) and I just landed my gigs at the right time it seemed. Other bartenders had just gotten fired right before me. I just showed up at the places and asked to speak directly to the bar manager and got hired on the spot. Don't speak to anybody else but the bar/club manager and just dazzle him/her with your personality. That's what they want to see. They want to see that you've got that winning persona that will keep the customer coming back to order more drinks from you.

Also... bartending is all about speed. Do you have experience with fast bar? If you want to work at a night club, and you have this experience, the manager should seriously consider you, and put you above the other applicants. You gotta be able to sell yourself to the bar managers just like you would to a customer at a SC. Oh... and continue to be persistent with them even after the interviews, then they will see that you're serious and really want the job.

Great advice! Also if you apply at a lounge where they require barmaids, cocktail waitress etc. let them know you do it all! Have done it all, have alot of experience are very reliable and also have a beautiful resume made up, i think that looks very good for any job. Even if it's not required. You will look and sound very professional at the job/s you do there.

PS. this is going to sound odd, but i have a book about getting the job you want. They say red or black are power colours, and it's been shown that these two colours are picked out of a crowd of people all with the same experience! Also dark blue..no light colours.

    Good luck.

This is also excellent advice. I've noticed that wearing black to more upscale lounges gets me hired as you tend to look more polished in black.

Navy is the number one color to wear to get hired in an office position, BTW.

Oh yeah... the resume thing. Just about every job nowadays requires a resume... silly me ... how could I have forgotten that? It has been over 6 years for me, ya' know.

It was a couple of months back, but the Walnut Room, over Alfa restaurant on Walnut Street between 17th and 18th was looking for "college age" bartenders. I don't know how that turned out, but if whomever applied couldn't keep it, there would be an opening about now.

I'm wondering what yall think about this ? It seems like great advice, and the resumes are very eye-catching. However I wonder if having such a flashy resume would actually hurt jobseekers in some cases? Do managers at say, upscale bars / restaurants / hotels like this kind of flashy resume or do you think they'd view it as unprofessional and toss it?

I actually like ^those! If I ran a bar, I'd put resumes like that at the top of the pile! It gets your attention. Might have to use her when I apply for a bartending job this next winter.

I haven't bartended in over 6 years, so I don't know what current bar/nightclub managers look for anymore as far as hiring/resumes go, but that is a pretty nifty site. Lots of good tips. I've taken resume courses, though, and the instructors always said to keep your resume as simple and professional looking as possible for any job you're applying for. I don't think those flashy resumes would hurt one's chances at a gig, but I would probably opt to keep it more on the simple side. That's just my style, too, though.

I think those are cute, but it's really the experience that matters.

Now if I had two candidates with equal experience and one of them had a resume like that, I would tend to think that they are more creative and savvy and call them in first.

You, my dear, are everything BUT boring. If I had the chance to hire someone like you, I wouldn't care if her resume was on a piece of toilet paper!!
