    Default rice cookers

does anyone have one that doesn't suck? I love brown rice but its such a mess to make when i use mine that i rarely make it.

Mine always stays on too long before switching to "warm" (which is too hot anyways) so my rice gets stuck on the bottom.

The worst part is that it gets starchy gooey water alllll over my counter top and the appliance.

I was thinking maybe i could get one straight from japan or somewhere, but i dont know how to go about that.

any recommendations...that are at a decent price?

Don't buy straight from Japan, it'll have different electric plugs. You can get them here in the USA. Look for the Zojirushi or Panasonic brands. Don't be afraid to drop more than $100, as they'll last you a long time.

Go to your local Chinatown, or look up the brands. I found these on amazon.com.

I have a Zojirushi brand rice cooker. I love that thing. It can keep rice for a little while after you cook it too. I've kept mine for up to four days after cooking it and it was still delicious. Highly recommended.

    That is my rice cooker.

As a rule of thumb, rice cookers with lifting lids on a pot are, at best, messy and cheap. Like Black and Decker, etc. Junk.

You're not a dummy. I had one, and could not figure out, for the love of dog, why starch water was flying everywhere and my rice came out more like porridge instead of nice, white, fluffy rice. It was way more involvement than the box promised. I did a bit of poking around and found out B&D makes junk all around. It was then I got my beloved Zojirushi rice cooker for Christmas. ^^

Oh, when making brown rice in a Japanese rice cooker, you might have to experiment around with how much water you add. I've found that with my Panasonic 3-cup rice cooker, I have to add less water than recommended or my brown rice will be porridge.

I bought my rice cooker really cheaply from the supermarket (for like $15 or something) and it's the best one I have ever used!

If I'm just cooking rice for one or two people though, I'll just put it in the microwave. Heaps less cleaning and I find the microwave cooks it really well.

^ That zojirushi one looks heaps like the one my friends had in Japan when I used to live there.

Don't buy straight from Japan but buy a rice cooker that's made in Japan. Tiger is another reputable Japanese brand I've had great success with.

I really love my zojirushi.....it is hands-down my favorite kitchen gadget.....I got a tiny one....3-cup for my dorm room 5 years ago....still love it! Make sure to use cal-rose rice! It really does make a difference! The texture is so much nicer than standard longer grains that most of us buy.

How about this? I buy cooked, frozen brown rice in a box (inside are like 4 plastic pkgs.) Traders Joes, or Whole Foods, like $3.99 a box. They also have white rice, & sometimes Spanish rice.

Had it before. Doesn't compare to fresh cooked rice, in my opinion.
