    Default Did you know?

Roe v Wade the most important decision (IMO) concerning womens rights, the woman who was Roe fought a few years back to get her own court decision overturned!!

Years after winning that court case that made abortion legal, she joined the pro life movement! She claimed that her attourney had been wanting to fight to legalize abortion for a long time and decided she provided an opportunity to do so, and roe was pressured into going to court.
( apparently, roe became pregnant as a result of a rape, although later she claimed she was never raped. After being turned down by many doctors for an abortion, she sought an attournet for adoption. That attorney referred her to a different attorney, saying they just wanted to talk to her. That different attorney was the one who "pressured" roe into taking her case to court and attempting to legalize abortion.

years later Roe found god or whatever, and joined the prolife movment. I *think* it was in 2006 she tried to get her own Supreme Court decision overturned and make abortion illegal once again. Thank God the Sup. Court. didn't agree and refused to overturn their previous decision.

huh. Who knew? who knew we came so close to losing our right to choose.

And you know those damn prolifers are all reaaaal excited to have THE ROE as a part of their movment. It certainly gives them a lot of braging rights to be able to say that the woman who fought for legalize abortion finally saw the error in her ways and joined them.

anyway..just random trivia I leanred this week. I thought it was interesting.

I've known it for a while and it pisses me off. If you don't agree with it, don't do it. You don't have the right to tell me what I should do with my body. And certainly don't hide behind God when it comes to this. God and I will have a sitdown when the time comes and YOU won't be there.

Wow I had no idea. You learn something new everyday.

And I think it's crazy that just a few seemingly simple events can change history.

OT, but I've met Sarah Weddington--the lawyer who argued the case for Roe v. Wade. She's an incredible woman.

^yeah, Roe claims that she coerced her into the fight to legalize abortion. Roe never really wanted to get involved.

Well, whatever. Tell Sarah Weddington that I said thank you. I appriciate what she did immensly.

    * Jane Roe isn't her real name, can't remember what it is...

I too have known about this for quite some time and am shocked and hurt by her decision to turn her back on that all important time in history.

So she's found God. Hope he/she likes hypocrites. Seems like she's only into things when it suits her personal agenda.

No matter. The results of those events changed the face of womens' right to choose and nothing that she says or does can change that, no matter how hard she prays.

I wonder...does she realize that legalizing abortion again wouldn't make it go away?

    Doesn't she remember???
She lived through illegal "back alley" abortions. She saw first hand how women died from infections or blood loss. She knew abortions were available, if you were willing to take the risk.

Just cause they were illegal didn't mean they didn't exist. It just meant more women died from using unqualified people to perform them. And that's exactly what would happen again. Doesn't she know that? Or doesn't she care?

Man, I'd love to meet that woman and ask her.

    I didnt know that.

In a sense, it's not that surprising...I'm sure the weight of being 'Roe' was somethng she considered often..coupled with the probability that she was targeted by pro-lifers.

    Very interesting

roe vs wade is a crappy legal decision as far as making abortion legal goes. should look up griswold-- it is much less well known, but also groundbreaking.

the lady in question was easily led astray, both by pro-abortion folks and by pro-life folks. she was unfortunately just a puppet to whichever side needed to exploit her.

Here's a great compilation called "The Only Moral Abortion is My Abortion," which is all about women like Jane Roe. Summary: Many women seeking abortions are anti-abortion. I'm not just talking about how they think it's wrong, I'm talking about infamous protesters coming in for abortions and going back to the picket lines the day after. When interviewed before the procedure, they will still firmly state that abortion is murder and should be illegal. Some doctors refuse to perform on them, not out of spite, but because you know that they're not going to follow the procedure (rest, take antibiotics, get follow-up treatment) and get publicity, which will endanger the doctor.

Actually, I'm not surprised that Jane Roe defected like this. Guilt is the worst human emotion. I'm not happy with her decision, but I can't say that I'm surprised. What really pisses me off is how she's being used as a tool in the anti-choice movement, and allowing herself to be.

why doesn't it piss you off that she was used as a pawn by the pro-abortion side of things?

she was ill-used by both sides, not just one.

She wasn't ill-used by both sides. SHE SOUGHT LEGAL COUNSEL.

They did their jobs, as she asked them to--and they did it pro bono, at that. Be as anti-choice as you want, but get your facts straight.

She sought legal counsel for adoption, having given up on tryign to getan abortion. The attorney she met with referred her to a different attorney, who brought up fighting the anti abortion laws.
She went along with it, yes...and she claims she was coerced, not fully understanding what she was agreeing to undertake.

That's not even remotely true, if you actually look at the records.

All the meetings that took place had minutes recorded, etc.

There's a paper coming out with my name on it as a research assistant on this very topic. In fact, it's how I met Ms. Weddington--interviewing her on the subject with my prof. She expressed a desire to not have the baby at all and lamented the fact that abortion was impossible. It was only at that point that legal counsel suggested taking the case forward.

From the book, Roe V Wade, by Marian Faux

" Norma spent the next few weeks in a futile search for an abortionist....

Gradually, over several weeks, she began to concider any other option she could think of, which was adoption. She returned to her physian for help. he gave her the name of a young lawyer, Henry Mc Closkey, who sometimes arranges private adoptions. She called McCloskey, and he agreed to meet her.

.....She told him she really wanted an abortion but since she couldn't afford one she had no choice but to put her child up for adoption.

Whithout telling her why, McCloskey asked Norma to meet another lawyer. he promised Nora that she could return to him if the other lawyer was not helpful. This was how Norma met Linda Coffee abd why she was in a restaurant recounting her story for Coffee and Weddington.

now ir was time for for coffee and weddington to tell her what she could do for them.
They told her they were looking for a woman to be a plaintiff in an abortion suit. They told Norma she wa no alone n her attempts to obtain a legal abortion, nor was she alone in her failure to get one.

    ( paraphrased)
...They asked Norma how she felt abotu not being able to get an abortion, and she said she was angry. They said she was not alone and that they wanted to help her, and many other women in her plight. That's why they needed her help.

    * So anyway..that's where I'm getting my info.
But thisis all becides the point. The point is..I found it interesting that she changed her mind so many years later.

BTW, did you know that wealthy women never have abortions? They have emergency appendectomies (with a cute little skin-deep scar) or emergency D&C's.

Anyone with the bucks can have an abortion (er, I mean an APPENDECTOMY) and get it covered up.

I'm glad the book represented the truth, Kaylinn. That IS how I was told it happened. But they never would have sent her to the second lawyer, had she not, HERSELF, insisted that she wanted an abortion.

It makes me so mad that Jane Roe allowed the facts to get so twisted afterwards. She was in no way coerced.

Yes, but I never said she was coerced. I said she CLAIMS to have been coerced, which she does.

According to the book I referenced above, Norma(roe) knew nothing at all about law, or the legalities invoolved. Her lawyers made her think it over for a few days before deciding to get involved. Tey wanted an informed client. They explained everything to her in detail. roe was excited to be a part of it, according to the book.

Roe claims to have been coerced, after the fact, never really understanding what was involved. Maybe she is just sayng that to make her new prolife friends happy.

the actual story is a bit more complicated than that. the legal counsel in question had their own little agendas, same as the pro-lifers who scooped her up decades later.

it appears i x-posted and the topic of coercion and agency was already covered. seriously, roe v wade is overrated, because it's a weak decision legally, which is one of the reasons it's been so completely eroded over time.

as for your assumption, i'm pro-women's health, personally.

You're right. I didn't read your original post correctly--sorry about that.

I think I was upset by Mia's comment that she was used as a pawn by pro-abortion lawyers and was responding to the initial comment in combination with yours.

Mia, by your logic, any person involved in a Supreme Court Case is a pawn of their lawyers. Roe wasn't the innocent, ignorant, little girl she makes herself out to be. She was kept completely informed of what would be happening every step of the way.
