    Default Heartburn....Dear God, the pain....

Okay. This is ruining my life. I can't sleep at night....as soon as I lay down I can feel the burning creeping up my chest to the back of my throat. Rolaids and Tums aren't making a difference anymore. A huge glass of milk USED to help but it doesn't do a damn thing now.

Somebody must have a heartburn solution that's baby safe. I just want a decent night's sleep. I'm going to go prop myself up in a chair for the night and hope it goes away.

ACV helps me. As does a little bit of ice cream. And I sleep on 3 pillows.

You might be having mild symptoms of acid reflux? Try zantac. I always get acid reflux when I have something dairy and something spicy together or soon after the other.

I have had this for a while, and finally broke down and got PREVACID. In one day the problem stopped

Ugh, I have no idea. This heartburn just came right out of nowhere about a month ago. I've got a OB-GYN appointment tomorrow afternoon so I'll ask him for a prescription for...something. Anything that means I can actually sleep in my bed instead of propped up in a chair.

I tried the sleeping on multiple pillows thing but the baby is too big for me to lay on my back now. :-(

I feel for you...Heartburn sucks. You are having a flare up for two reasons. As your uterus expands, it presses on the stomach. Your hormones are also causing your gastroesophageal spincter to loosen, letting stomach acid reflux into your esophagus. Owie!

OTC pepcid and tagamet are considered safe during pregnancy. OTC Prilosec is considered Class C and should not be taken unless you discuss it with your OB.

All the usual reflux rules apply: Eat small frequent meals. Don't lie down immediately after eating. Avoid all the fun foods: spicy, caffeinated, carbonated, chocolate, tomatoes, acidic, mint, alcohol, greasy, heavily spiced. Propping up the head of your bed a few inches may help. Don't smoke. Avoid anything tight around your stomach. Don't bend over at the waist.

    Good luck and happy gestating.

I swear by Pepcid AC for heartburn. My mom has acid reflux and it helps her too. I try to keep some in my purse.

    Aw I feel for you.
My babies were sooo big, I had horrid heartburn for the last month or so.
I slept propped up for at least the last month. It helped a lot.

    Ahh, a glimpse of my future . . .

I hope you find a pregnancy-safe solution soon! When you do, definitely post it as future info for the rest of us incubators!

I went to see my OB this afternoon and he said it was totally safe to take Pepcid if I had to...which I CERTAINLY do.

Ugh....I just keep telling myself 'it's only another month.'

I feel for you. This was about the stage where my heartburn kicked in as well. I don't remember what I took but it was liquid and I carried a big bottle of it in my purse. You're right, tums and rolaids don't work at all.

Was it Mylanta? OB suggested that too but with my luck carrying a bottle of liquid in my bag would end up having disastrous results.

Yeah, tums and rolaids do absolutely nothing. They might take the edge off a bit if you eat the whole package but this is so bad that even my throat hurts in the morning. I bought a box of pepcid on my way home from the doctor's office today, so we'll see if it does the job or not tonight.

now that you mention it, yes it was Mylanta. I didn't even carry a spoon, I just swilled from the bottle.

ps: There were no incidents of spilling in my purse.

Yep. That was me and my bottle of Pepto Bismol for the first few months, until my lovely doctor wrote me a prescription for Diclectin. I just didn't see the point in dirtying half a dozen spoons a day when I wasn't willing to share my bottle anyways. I was all 'Step off bitch, that's MY Pepto!"

Have you ever tried sprite with a tiny splash of bitters? Bitters have a TINY TINY bit of alcohol in them, but you literally only use five or six drops of them, so it would probably be the equivalant of half of a small sip of Miller Lite, if that. And it really really really works like a charm. I don't really get heart burn but my dad did and I knew he drank this and I always reccomend it to people with heartburn. Nobody has ever told me it didn't work!!

Would flat Sprite work? It seems like carbonation is a huge trigger for me.

Slippery Elm powder!! It tastes like dirt (as in like a dry, old, been in the sun type of dirt) - which for a herbal thing is actually a nice change from the 101 different types of horse ass. Who would've thought so many things could taste so bad?

Anyway, you'll have to check if it's ok (There's a lot of herbal stuff you need to be wary of when you're pregnant!) But I would be surprised to find out Slippery Elm was one of them though. But just to be safe.

It comes in tablets as well but if you're using it for heart burn - that would be pointless as it's main function is to provide a coating or protective layer. So get the powder and if you can find one with peppermint oil DEFINITELY get that one! (Again I don't know if you can have it?? Think so... but just check.)

Peppermint is really good for settling stomaches. Btw - I sometimes use 'dirt' (aka slippery elm) to soothe my tummy when I'm feeling a bit ill and find it really important to whisk it smooth on these occasions!

You mix it with water and drink it - it mixes easily enough but you get some little clumpy lumps (It sits on the surface like cornflour does). Usually these aren't even an issue and wouldn't be worth bothering about...

Be careful of slippery elm. Look under precautions. At the same time, other webpages state that it is considered safe in pregnancy. I would avoid it until you can speak with your doctor.

No worries. I'm not really big on the whole 'herbal cure' thing. The Pepcid, milk and bland diet seems to be doing the job quite nicely. The only natural remedy I've used is colloidal silver and that's because my doctor wouldn't give me antibiotics for my throat infection. IMO, the silver did a better job then a prescription would have.
