Never tried it, but I'm curious too. Is it even legal to buy? I've never seen it in any liquor stores.

Real absinthe contains wormwood, is illegal in many countries (including the USA) and it will fuck you up. Some people hallucinate on it; I did. It tastes like licorice soaked in Everclear and I'm not interested in trying it again.

You can buy imitation absinthe in some places. I think they call it "absinth" with no e to specify that it's fake and has no wormwood. I haven't tried that since I don't like the taste.

It's extremely hard to find real absinthe nowadays, unless you go to the Middle East. Even Europe is now producing a disgusting, watered-down version.

I witnessed one guy in particular drinking it at a party. Later on I asked "where's Bill?" someone said he CHUGGED the Absinthe and was throwing up somewhere.

Unfortunately I had to ride in the same car as him on the way back---my friend was driving and Bill was in the backseat passed out. We got to Bill's house and he spewed while laying cockeyed in the car, and it was weird because it was like he was unconscious when he did it.

He then went to the hospital for alcohol poisoning.

Maybe the Czechs are not such dumbasses as these lil American kids.

Someone had I guess illegaly brought it on the plane from another country.

    Tastes like motherfucking ass too.

Yea fuck that, unless I know everyone, I'm immediately boycotting and walking out of any party I see that has absinthe involved!!!

Yeah I've tried it. It was cool, a little trippy. LSD is better. Then again I shouldn't have gotten drunk before I did it so that way I could've felt the full effects.

My roommates got ahold of some real absinthe last year, and being the crazy drunks they were, decided to take shots of it. The first one tried, made a really gross face, but held it in- got really drunk and passed out- so she couldn't report if there were any hallucinogenic effects. The second roommate took a shot, made a really gross face, and puked all over the kitchen.

IMO, even though I don't drink so I'm a little biased, absinthe= bad.

Absinthe when had properly is quite nice. Maybe being an artist with french blood makes a difference. The real stuff is illegal in Oz but you can bring over a certain amount for personal use and I've seen some of the 'real' stuff in a few 'upper class' bars. Not sure how they get around it but it has a huge pricetag.
I've never hallucinated properly from it but we would drink a bottle slowly between five people, for the enjoymant, not to get fucked up, so yeah, I like it.

No wonder they got sick, Gypsy! You're not supposed to shoot it! You strain sugar water into it and sip it very slowly. Silly American kids, shooting and chugging everything like cheap tequila!

I have a few friends who love absinthe, but I refuse to try it. I'm afraid of hallucinagenics (and spelling correctly lol). And it is illegal in the US, from what I understand, but one of my friends told me he orders it over the internet from Portugual or someplace in Europe? It escapes me, but he has to have it shipped, can't buy it here.

My friend was in Amsterdam and tried it....he said it got him wasted. He was spending Christmas there, and he said he went back to his hotel to wrap some presents, using Santa wrapping paper. He said he started cutting the wrapping paper, and when he started to cut the Santa, it jumped off the wrapping paper and gave him the finger, then ran away.

Yek, you hallucinated? Care to share the experience?

I've tried it once or twice. At least, I was told that what I was drinking was absinthe that had been brought back less than legally.

Too sweet. Didn't like it. Tasted something like uzo or grappa or raki, if I remember right? Might've been some mint taste to it? I just remember that it was too sweet.

I've only tried the synthetic absinthe (i.e. wthout the genuine wormwood in it).

I drink it straight (without the sugar/water) and prefer it that way.

As long as you remember that it's 70% - 75% alcohol and as such twice as strong as a normal spirit, it's not much different from drinking (say) pernod.

OTH, I've seen a number of people flat on their ass because they've underestimated the strength.

There's a place in the Czech Republic that says they can send real stuff into Canada and the US. I know it's legal here and you can actually buy it in some liquor stores, but I don't know about the US.

I've had the real stuff, and all it did was really make me want to take a nap. No hallucinations at all. There was a pleasant sense of euphoria, but that was quickly overtaken by the urge to sleep immediately. Oh, I like black licorice and I still thought it was pretty foul.

I had alot to drink that night and I am pretty it was the Absinthe that made me feel not so drunk ish BUT that was not such a good thing . I fought with my BF all night and ended up pretty embarssed in the morning . I am posting some photos of the whole ordeal in a little bit xoxo

I know little of it, read in an article about Marilyn Manson (Love Him!!) that it was his drink of choice, it's a very heavy drink, so strong they don't make it how it was "originally" made, wow the watered down version is still banned or hard to get

I adore Absinthe. I miss the old days of Absinthe parties in NYC. If I could get my hands on it... life would be grand.
The parties are back, thanks to Lucid ...

Also, these days it's technically not illegal for Americans to order foreign Absinthe for private consumption purposes ( 3 bottles max per US customs )...

Plus there is now a HUGE Absinthe revival in the NY area thanks to the likes of Marilyn Manson, who has arranged with a Swiss distiller to produce a special recipe called ManSinthe (which tastes like ass IMHO ... too much wormwood plus too much anise = licorice taste). But it has certainly drummed up a whole lot of new interest in Absinthe as well as in extreme partying !

Has anyone made their own absinthe? I recently bought a kit from someone where everything was premixed in 2 separate bottles & you just have to add the water & vodka. But the last time I bought a kit with the seeds & I tried to do it myself I didn't do it thoroughly enough, so I only had a taste & didn't like it. I was just wondering if I should try to make it w/ a flavored vodka this time?
^^^ yes I used to work with the Green Devil kits years ago. The biggest problems were being able to filter out enough of the 'solids' so that the stuff doesn't taste like toxic herbal tea, and finding ethyl alcohol to mix up which didn't introduce an extra taste of its own (best I could come up with was EverClear, but that's hard to find as well). Once the internet based Absinthe sellers started using 'courier delivery', such that good foreign Absinthe essentially became readily available to US customers, I stopped screwing around with the kits.

It tastes revolting, but then I don't like licorice. It has a VERY strong licorice flavor
not all absinthe brands have a strong licorice taste. This comes from the heavy use of anise. There are also several brands that are anise-free and don't taste like licorice at all ...

also, just like Chateau Latour versus Ripple wines or just like Stolichnya vs Mr. Boston vodkas, there is a wide range of quality between different brands of Absinthe. The problems for Americans (and other countries where absinthe isn't widely sold domestically) is that it's hard to tell the 'cheap shit' from the 'top shelf' stuff !

For me the dead giveaway is whether the Absinthe is actually distilled, or simply macerated (herbs ground up), mixed and filtered. Distillation really removes lots more impurities and makes for a lot smoother taste ... but distilled Absinthes are always more expensive.

Mine is from the Czech Republic
the Czech absinthe formulas typically don't use a lot of anise ... thus they don't have an overwhelming licorice flavor. But there is some truly terrible stuff being exported from the Czech republic these days too. I am told that the truly terrible Czech absinthes were able to stay in business because for many years the Czechs were about the only country that didn't ban Absinthe manufacture. The only really good Czech absinthe I have run across is La Boheme. IMHO all of the other Czech absinthe's should be confined to charcoal lighter duty !

My personal favorite lately is Swiss La Bleue Clandestine. Switzerland was the original birthplace of Absinthe, and since Switzerland has now recently re-legalized the manufacture of Absinthe, the Swiss distillers are really putting out an extremely high quality product. And the La Bleue's (blue formula) go lighter on the licorice taste, whereas the La Verte's (green formula) taste like 'classic Absinthe'.

The absinthe 'connoisseurs' tell me that the absolute best 'classic Absinthe' product available today is Jade Verte Suisse 65 ... . According to them, this particular absinthe is an authentic recreation of an extremely popular Absinthe produced in the 19th century ... which was chemically 'reverse engineered' when a handful of unopened dust covered bottles of the real McCoy were recently discovered in somebody's cellar. Personally it has too much anise = licorice flavor for my taste, but this is supposedly the very same stuff that Tolouse Lautrec and Ernest Hemingway used to hammer down / get hammered on !!!

It also appears that Australia has re-legalized Absinthe as well ... which means that Aussie girls can now try some of the 'good stuff' ...

You can buy Absente in Nevada, but not in Utah. It is a drink that replaces the wormwood ingredient with a related one called Southern Wormwood, which gives it a flavor but does not drive you insane. Absinthe was what Vincent Van Gogh drank that (may) have made him go insane.

I like it OK, but think it is WAY overpriced at $50+ a liter. The way we drink it is this: Put a sugar cube on a slotted spoon over a glass. (The hard core Absente drinkers have their own special little silver slotted spoon that they use only for this.) Slowly pour a shot of Absente over the sugar cube until it is soaked, letting the rest run down into the glass. Then, set the sugar cube on fire and let it drip down into the glass. Add a shot of water and stir.

I've seen hard drinkers totally wasted after four of these.

Like I said, it is good, but I don't think it is worth the money. 'course I prefer Bourbon to fancy drinks anyway, so I may be biased. If you like Jagermeister, you'll probably like this, too.

Edit: Read the official line about Absente here: http://www.absente.com/
