    Default Jury Duty Scam?

Well, it's been a long time since I've been summoned for jury duty (like, years)... but I don't remember the form looking like this, they didn't give me directions to a parking lot at a mall across town (there's a courthouse 20 minutes from me), and I don't remember them asking for my SS#... I mean, if they're the friggin' government, why do they need me to mail them my SS#?? Is there some new scam that I don't know about?

They gave this number and website:

    http://www.casd.uscourts.gov/

    1-800-998-9035

But, when I googled "San Diego Courts", that site didn't come up.

How did you receive the notice?

Be very careful and don't give up that social security number. There are several scams involving jury duty going on right now. It's an identity theft scam.

Google: Jury duty scam - plenty of info there.

There are a lot of jury duty scams going around. Try calling the number on and talking to someone there.

Looks like you got a summons to be on a jury in CA. The site is legit and you will need to respond to the summons unless you would like a $1,500 fine and/or jail time for failure to do so.

Why do you think you need to mail your Social Security card to them? Your information should already be on file.

^That's from the site that I posted and what it looks like. How do you know of that site? How do you know it's legit?

I don't think I need to mail them my card, but it asks for my SS# right on that form. They sent me some papers with it saying that I needed to give it to them so that they could send me a check for going.

EDIT: I just called my mom... um, federal court?

Wtf? I'm reading the directions they sent with the form... I'm supposed to fill out that info and send the form in, and then call after 6pm on Sunday (1/6/08 ) to see if I need to report or not... and I'm on call for a month?

So... maybe it's not a scam? But I still can't believe they'd need my SS#. Argh, pain in the butt... fuck fuck fuck. Even if it's real, I'm totally not writing down my SS# and putting it in the mailbox. No way.

You may be required by law to in order to get either the payment (if you are not employed/do not work that day) or missed wages reimbursement (otherwise) that they probably offer. The won't be able to disburse payment without a SSN to use to report the transaction to the IRS.

I think I'd rather pass on the $40 than risk it... Grrr, jury duty sucks... maybe I'll write them a letter and sound like a crazy person and be a bad American.

Go directly to the court house and ask them if the paper is legit. I would imagine they have your summon on file if it is.

I would hope not! The info they sent me says that if I'd have had to drive 80+ miles for this, they would have set me up in a hotel... and they pay mileage for every one... you'd be expensive!

    WOO FREE HOLIDAY!

Best way to get out of jury duty: wear a sweater during the interview and talk a lot about how everyone is guilty, especially 'dem black folk. Betcha they never call on you!!

^ Lol! I was thinking boots and a super short skirt (since they specified that tank tops were banned), put on stripper make-up, and basically look like a slut, hehe. I think I'm just going to do it. My dad is all excited about it. He was like, "You might get on something like OJ's case!" and I was like, "Or murdered later, like on 'Criminal Minds' or some other TV show".

How did you not Google the phone number?

And Lysondra, yep, you can get a jury duty summons. If you're still a US citizen, then it would be for whatever your US "domicile" is. Rather unlikely, though.

I've worked in the legal field many years and know all of the court's website for my state, plus this is a .gov domain which only government run sites can have. The Federal Court process is very different than that of the State Court. I've been summoned for jury duty many times and they have all my information on file (but this was all in STATE court).

I would call the number provided to ask any questions you have, but you cannot ignore the summons.

    Good luck, jury duty blows!

I had to report for jury duty last year and I remember having to fill out a form asking my name/address/ss#/employment info...which is retarded But I don't remember if I sent the form back or just took it with me to jury duty. But I think I took it...

    ETA
Everyone hates jury duty, and I admit it was no fun for me. But I would love to be involved in some crazy murder case. Imagine being picked for the original OJ Simson case... how interesting to be right in the middle of everything.
But yeah, I didn't even get picked. I wasted an entire morning for nothing.

No. I totally want to do jury duty. My neighbor got called a few years ago and the case turned out to be a murder trial! She cried like a baby and got excused.

The only time I got called it was for the county my mom lived in while I was in "temporary housing" (read: halfway house) in another county, so I was automatically denied.

My mom has gotten summoned like every year. She never gets to serve.

I would dig jury duty, totally.
