    Default Dying hair with henna

Has anyone done this? Where can I get the henna? They used to sell it at Sally's Beauty Supply here but don't anymore. I read that it's gentler and lasts longer than the kind of dyes you buy at a store, which is what I need... I think if any of those dyes go near my hair again, it'll all fall out.

I've never done it myself but I know a fairly decent amount on the topic. If your hair is colored right now, it is so not a good idea to henna over it. Basically the henna and the standard haircolors are so chemically different, that if you do one over the other, it can turn your hair green. Even a test strand in this particular scenario can't really predict what will happen on the other side of your head. Best idea is to grow what you have in your hair out, then henna. (Would also work this way in reverse too, have to grow henna out before coloring over it). The only exception would be is if you have a semi-permanent color in it that washes out (making sure you give ample time for it to do so). Do you know if you used permanent or semi-permanent for your hair?

Also, whatever you do, don't use the stuff from Sally's either. It's crap in a packet.
Here's one good resource for quality hennas. (If anyone knows of any others, maybe they can chime in.

I used the LUSH henna last month. I like it, but it's not the best quality.

Just keep in mind you have to comepletely grow out the henna-ed hair before you can get highlights or permanent color, especially if you've repeatedly colored your hair wit henna... If you plan to change your look or see a professional, previously henna-ed hair will have unpredictable/undesirable results.

I love hennaforhair.com. I buy my henna from them as well. Do as they say, seriously. It's a slight pain to put in-you have to mix it, wait for the dye to come out, then put it on and leave it for hours (I usually leave it over night) but so worth it. It does not come out. At all. It may lighten a small bit, it stays! Seconding Mia! It doesn't come out!

For previously dyed hair (In my experience):

I waited about 3 months after the last time I used a chemical dye. A pain, but you need to. Hair dye is a base and henna uses an acid=green hair. Do the hair test found on the website.

Use apple cider vinegar instead of lemon juice in your henna mix-less drying. Add a tbsp or two of olive oil (more if your hair is way long.

It's never too soon to research about and baby your hair. Look up thread on long hair and esp. jojoba oil. Start now-your hair will rejoice.

I have genetically crap hair and spent YEARS chopping/dying/crimping it. I've spent two years trying to baby it, slowly improving my methods (jojoba has been a big step forward, as has sleeping with it in braids, and washing maybe once a week), and it's almost to my bra strap (I've cut off the dead a few times). The first 8 or so inches are twice as thick as it had been, at least. PM me if you have any questions about the henna!

^^^ I completely agree with the above.

As a side note, I use red wine as my acid instead of lemon juice - less drying, redder color.

I've heard that you CAN use body-quality henna over chemically dyed hair because it's 100% natural, vs most store-bought henna which still has some amount of chemical. Source is this site (http://www.mehandi.com/shop/hairhenna.html) Thoughts??

Nope. Shouldn't do it - DEF. not without a strand test. I can vouch that my cousin tried it once (she didn't ask me first) and got black, swampy green hair. She used my leftovers - and I use BAQ henna. So..... No. Don't do it.

And yeah, the cheap red wine.
