Default Can I take a dog away from someone

Okay here is the whole story, forgive me if its a little confusing but I am trying to figure out what to do.

On Saturday I was working when a girl I worked with got a phone call from her ex boyfriend saying that he left her dog in the parking lot and he doesn't want anything to do with it. My coworked was very upset because she was currently staying with her new boyfriend and couldn't take the dog with her, so she was going to take her to the pound. I told her she should take it to the humane society which is a no kill shelter down here. For some reason she did not want to take it to either the spca or humane society. I offered to take the dog home with me for a few days until she could find her own place to live. I have tried calling the girl a few times with questions about the dog and have not gotten any calls back.

My husband and I have decided we would like to keep the dog permantly and pay for her to get caught up on shots, registered and spayed - I am a firm believer in having dogs fixed. Again I tried calling my coworker and have not gotten a call back. I sent her a text message explaining what we wanted to do and she is not sure whether or not we should keep her and she said she would call me when she left the mall. I have tried calling her a few more times and have not gotten an answer or a call back.

My question is I know my husband and I can give this dog a good home and I am concerned about giving the dog back to my coworker for a few reasons. She never registered the dog or got a licence for it, she does not have a permanent place to live, she never got the dog fixed, had the dog in a spike coller (where if you pull on the coller a spike literally goes in the dogs neck) and has no paper work for her.

Anyway I am wondering if this would be considered an abonded dog and would we be able to adopt her or does this dog still belong to my coworker and could she legally take her dog back.

She has a Prong collar around it's neck...need much experience to use one of those, good training method by Pros. ONLY...

No. You can't legally take an animal that is living with someone. She has to turn it over to you. And, when/if she does have her sign a paper of ownership to you.

    Good luck.

I don't know much about the legality of it, but if the dog was in the parking lot then I think it's fair game. Just my $.02

Whoa wait. She left the dog with you. Yes, call that abandonment...i would. She would not want to pursue this in court. If you have been handed over the dog, no papers signed...it's yours, get it registered with a county tag asap!!!

If you really want the dog, stop texting about it and don't leave any messages on a machine about it anymore. You may risk a friendship over this, but clearly she has left the dog with you...Take it over.

    Good luck.

^^I agree with what has been said already.^^

She left the dog with you, with no tags, no license or registration, not even proper care for the dog. It sounds like even if she did want the dog back, she wouldn't have proof of ownership.

If you hadn't left her messages I'd say IF she came at you about getting the dog back I'd say "Dog? What dog? OH, this dog? I've had for years. She was a stray I found." But since you did leave messages, just carry on with the dog. Take her to get her shots, spayed, all that good stuff that way you have a record of caring for the dog. She left her in a parking lot. I think that alone is grounds for a cruelty charge.

Keep the dog. Change your name and phone number.
"He will come in one of the pre-chosen forms. During the rectification of the Vuldrini, the traveler came as a large and moving Torg! Then, during the third reconciliation of the last of the McKetrick supplicants, they chose a new form for him: that of a giant Slor! Many Shuvs and Zuuls knew what it was to be roasted in the depths of the Slor that day, I can tell you!"

Could you take it to the pound? Explain the situation to them... They 'take' the dog. (Take it somewhere they do desexing, microchipping and all that jazz) You then buy your dog off them when she's ready to come home. What do you think? It's not as glamorous as an identity change, but it does contain the sneaky element...? Mmmm??

I was thinking about taking her to the humane society, the pounds down here don't handle any of that, I'm just not sure if I can legally say the dog is mine - technically the girl gave her to me to watch until she could get her own apartment, however, she was going to leave her at the pound which has a 4 day policy before the dogs are put down

The dog was abandoned. License and register it as your own and let it love you
    back.

^ Agreed. If she never licensed or registered it, then she has no way to prove the dog was hers. The dog was abandoned, she gave the dog to you...and hasn't returned any phone calls in regards to the dog (very concerned owner, eh?).

Just take the dog to your vet. Tell them that the dog was abandoned (it was) and have the dog neutered, caught up on shots, and registered.

    Problem solved.
