Default Stripper references on radio, videos, celeb magazines, everywhere! VENT!!

Rappers and rock stars are frequently making songs about us, celebs like Paris, Britney, Lindsay acting like it in clubs, poles are popping up everywhere? Exercise programs, parties, etc etc etc.

What do you ladies think of that? And why is the taboo still there? People are sing about us (it's been all over the radio), dance like us (every city--these club chicks "working" the pole), empower themselves thru 'stripper workouts'. It pisses me off to see these same people looking down on us for what we do. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

they jus wish they looked like us and had the BALLS.

    HAD to vent you guys!!

This isn't anything new. It's been going on for the better part of the 00's and in the opinion of many women on this board that have danced for years part of the reason why the business has overall been getting more frustrating and less lucrative for the most part.

^^^ agreed. The 'Hollywood Stripper Stereotype' has done more harm to the exotic dancing profession than anything else ... except perhaps girls like the Duke Rape Case dancer who prove to a nationwide audience that the Hollywood Stripper stereotype of a 'lying, thieving, drug addicted whore who would say or do anything in her own self interest' has a factual basis ! **** grrrr ****

LOL it's only funny because my BDSM forum has the same discussion about how they're being portrayed in the media and how it's often incorrect and often negatively affects people's perception of what it's all about. But I get that with money on the line, it's a little more serious here.

I actually enjoy this extra exposure because it helps my money in rural markets where strippers are still considered risque and exciting.

I think the harder working ones of us have a responsibility for showmanship and business ethics- we can prove there are sharp level-headed women in the biz.

I think the overexposure is one of the reasons the business is suffering!

I agree! I think that is part of the reason it has gone downhill...that and the oversaturation of the market..easy access to the internet...the low quality of girls.. poor economy...but I think the fact that it so apart of mainstream culture now...in alot of people's minds it has just become passe..it just changed so much..even though I caught the tale end of it I can see how drastic the change is..I think alot of exotic dancing has reached new levels of vulgarity and it obviously it hasn't helped the industry...which is a shame because watching a beautiful woman dance erotically is something that should never go out of style..I noticed alot of the quality entertainers are gone and I'm sure alot of it had to do with the changes.

....alot of the quality entertainers are re-training and re-branding themselves in the Burlesque scene IMO. Granted, I only know of one ex-stripper come burlesque performer locally in QLD. There are bound to be others. I'm in the process.

We are still taboo no matter what happens out there in the wide world. Goodness, my ex-accountant loved me as client for the pure fact and reason that I was one of the few people she could speak openly about pole dancing with without incurring any slander or stuff. Then when she left, I was moved onto her co-worker who took the same classes! LOL!

The industry has gone downhill a little yet it isn't as bad in Australia IMO compared to the USA.

Lysondra could probably expand upon the differences more for me.

I was just thinking of this today! With Britney and Beyonce using poles in their videos..
for some reason I still get the idea that society thinks it's ok for THEM to do it, it's somehow classy and risque. But when actual strippers do it for money in a club (and do a much better job at it, might I say!!), we are pegged as cheap and dirty....... It is annoying to see these wannabe strippers everywhere, I saw them popping up more and more at my club before I left.. They'd come in with their guy friends, get drunk and try to pole dance.
Anyway, I'm not in an eloquent mood right now, but I see all the references everywhere too, and it always pisses me off that mainstream society gets such a narrow, incorrect image of what we really do!

There are 3 seperate references to strippers in the last issue of Glamour. This from the mag that published that horrible article about us this year.

I don't think it's that big of a deal. If the average woman can feel a little sexier as a result of a stripper pole class, then what's the big deal? If it's hurting the industry it's only happening tiny bit by tiny bit, along with a million other little things.
