    Default Question about tats

OK so for some reason I'm watching this Housewives of the OC last night. There was a part where one girl on there, her 21 year old son went and got a huge ass tattoo on his torso. He showed it to her and she was pissed, started asking "what were you thinking?" and "I don't understand why you would do that yourself" and things like that.

This housewife is 40, which is my age too. She's a total hottie, just as a digression...sorry...couldn't help it...

Anyway, the kid (who, by the way, is a total bum...lazy, no ambition, etc) tells her something like "it's a generation thing."

Now, I know we have a lot of inked up people on SW, so here's my question(s)...

I don't have anything against people with tats, but I don't "get it" either, like this mom on the Housewives show. I don't understand why someone would want a tattoo...and I especially don't get it on the body of a beautiful woman...I see it as marring something that's already beautiful. Also, I think of the time 30 years down the road when that tat is faded and stretched and looking bad.

This is not meant to insult tat types...I just don't get it, and am hoping someone here can explain it to me. I've heard some explanations like "it makes me unique" but how can that be when every other 21 year old girl also has a tramp stamp?

You may feel free to flame me if you think I've insulted you, but that wasn't my intent.

I'm a clean canvas right now, but that's mainly for the reason that I am totally indecisive--I'm passionate about something one day and blase (with an accent mark) about it the next. So I know better than to commit my body to artwork.

However, I am attracted to the idea of tattoos because I DO see them as artistic and a way of expressing yourself. I like tattoos that really say something about the person, add a layer of depth or mystery. To me, it's an extension of their personality AND physical beauty at the same time, and I dig that. Granted, that's all assuming that the person was actually thinking about what they were getting, but even generic tats say something (not always very flattering) about their owner's personality.

To me a good tattoo is a piece of art. My body is a canvas and the ink is my muse.
My tattoos have meaning behind them, from the simple Irish heritage to the more complex battle of good vs evil that goes on within everyone.

We don't see it as "marring" ourselves we see it as a form of self-expression and we like the way it looks. Everyone has their own reasons.

It perplexes me that people who don't have tattoos and don't plan to get any are concerned about people who DO have them. What's it to you?

I agree SM the generic ones ("tramp stamps") suck the most. Like my sister.... got this little ass star on the small of her back. Was that really necessary??

I have seen a few tats I have liked, but to be honest most of those that I DO see ARE those stupid tramp stamps.....butterflies, suns, tribal shit....ugh. The Chinese words are the worst....I mean, if your living in a country where the native language is English (or whatever else), and you want some descriptive word on your body that everyone will see, why bother encrypting it?

And Mr Hyde, I don't get it either. These days it is original NOT to have tats if you ask me. If thats what people are aiming for, originality, then many have failed. I hate when stupid kids claim they are "original" by having played-out tats and shit, and go on and on about how they refuse to "conform." Um, you just did.

Bottom line, tattoos CAN be artistic and creative. Just, most of them aren't.

ETA: Then again, hell. Some people say I have marred by body by plastic surgery, and I just see it as enhancement. I guess it all depends on how you look at it!

Dead on to what I think.

I have one that represents my humorous nature, even if it was a blatant ripoff of someone else's tattoo, it still fits my personality to a T.

I have another that represents my loyal nature and dedication to things that I love. I know for a fact that it has inspired at least one person as well as given them the confidence that they had support in what they do, enough to have them get a variation of the tattoo themselves. Sort of like "Brothers in Ink" now.

I have future tattoos that I have planned, however they aren't getting done unless the people involved all come to a consensus as to the meaning and artistic nature of the work.

Untrue! Like I said, I don't have one but I get the appeal. There are lots of reasons that fans of tats may not have one themselves--job, health, frequent blood donors, painbabies, not with a partner who supports tats, etc.

I really doubt that the people who don't get why people get tattoos, would "get it" after getting one. Nor would they get one just so that they could "get it".

Its a bit of a paradox since they'd essentially "get it" BEFORE they got their first tattoo. Its not exactly something you try out just to see if you "get it".

I think its more of a simple difference in opinion on the matter, to them its just nothing they'd want to do, to others it is an obvious choice.

I agree with Machismo on that observation...I don't believe in anything like "it's a tattoo thang" or whatever.

Is it generational? I mean, obviously, there is something there. But what?

Speaking for myself, there is good ink and bad ink. Good ink is complementary to the shape and form of a body. It is interesting, unique, artistic, memorable, and says something about a person. Bad ink is often less than well done, often flash ink (i.e. other people have it/it's the stuff you see on the walls when you go into the studio), is often ill thought-out, does not work well with a person's body type/shape, and, as Coco Chanel may have suggested, as the last thing you put on, should be the first thing taken off.

I'm on a year waiting list right now to get the tattoo of my dreams- interesting, unique, flowing, edgy, and also showing aesthetic restraint... My artist has worked on major movies/tv shows (tom berg who designed the torso tat for Prison Break) and even he was impressed with my design). I don't find it "marring" at all... every time I curve my spine, my art will move with me. I will have a talented artists' work on me permanently, and I am VERY excited.

I think tattoo's should be judged (if they're indeed to be judged at all) on an individual basis. You like it or you don't, like any piece of artwork. Like any person. Similarly everyone's reasons for getting a tattoo are different and for myself at least I have a different story behind each one.
I like tattoos, I have a few and I plan to get a few more, my man on the other hand is a 'blank canvas' and plans to stay that way. I don't think there is such a great divide between the inked and the non inked, just as there is no longer any problem that I am white and my man is mixed race.

    So yah, my two cents.

I've been on the fence about getting one for the longest but after seeing LA Ink I'm interested. I want to get a very pretty feminine one. Most I've seen we're too manly for me but a beautiful lady tat is just my style! I like the idea of declaring my passion through the "stamp".

Every time I feel the desire to get a tat I lie down until it goes away.

It's a free country and to each his or her own but to me there is nothing attractive about them; most are poorly done ( most; not all ) and for the most part they detract rather than add to someone's appearance, imo.

If they're so great ; so attractive and if the wearer is so proud why not put one on your face ?

I know, I know how completely out of step I am with modern culture and generational expression BUT imagine how refreshing it has become to see an attractive dancer WITHOUT a tattoo. Someone secure enough in and about herself NOT to follow the pack and get one.

The easiest way to relate it is think of something you absolutely love, that you know of someone else who hates it.

For instance, I like to eat mushrooms, and my wife hates them.

Its just a simple matter of taste. Be it in food, art, music, tattoos, what have you.

Have you ever tried explaining how good what it is you like is? Only to have them rebuttal everything with a "That's so gross!" or "I just don't get it." or something to that nature? Thats about all it is, some people see tattoos and see infinite possibilities of color schemes, designs, hidden meanings, sentimentality and just a general fondness for what takes place. Others see a disfigurement of something that was beautiful before it was tampered with. Just two different sides of the fence. There really isn't much to explain, we just feel how we feel and the best either side can do is respect the other sides interpretation and leave each to their own.

I hope that made sense, I have a thought on how to explain it in my head, just not sure if I can put it into words quite right.

^^^ woah, what???? it has nothing to do with security OR following the pack. that's ridiculous. i'm scared of LOSIng business... it takes being secure with oneself TO get one.....

^And what's the deal with the face comment?

I got my small, simple tattoo on my shoulder blade, because that's the part of my body that it BELONGED on. I feel like it was a missing piece of me. If it had belonged on my face, I'd have put it there.

Machismo, eating a mushroom isn't something that is permanent or that changes your appearance. A better analogy would something like chopping off your leg because you think that amputation is pretty (and there are people who think this).

I don't know how the trend started, and I do think it's trend/fad, but it became more publicly acceptable to get a tattoo at some point in the last 10 years or so, and then the stampede started...once everyone started doing it, then EVERYONE started doing it. Now it's like izod shirts in the 80s...everyone has one.

So I do think there is a herd mentality at work here, but it's an extreme herd mentality that I still am not getting.

^^I resent the generalisation that everyone with a tattoo is 'following the pack'.
Yes some are a result of peer pressure or misguided fashion trends, but mine personally are an expression of my individuality and there are many reasons why i don't want one on my face, on being the same reason i don't wear stilletto's to the hospital.

So if the trend had never started, you can say with 100% certainty that you'd have a tat right now?

    Tattoo's didn't appear 10 years ago;

    Main article: History of tattooing
Tattooing has been a Eurasian practice at least since Neolithic times. Ötzi the Iceman, dating from the fourth millennium BCE, was found in the Ötz valley in the Alps and had approximately 57 carbon tattoos consisting of simple dots and lines on his lower spine, behind his left knee, and on his right ankle. Other mummies bearing tattoos and dating from the end of the second millennium BCE have been discovered at Pazyryk on the Ukok Plateau. Tattooing in Japan is thought to go back to the Paleolithic era, some ten thousand years ago. Various other cultures have had their own tattoo traditions, ranging from rubbing cuts and other wounds with ashes, to hand-pricking the skin to insert dyes.

I like tats. I find them sexy IF they have meaning, and i like to ask men and women the history behind the tat.

I have thought about getting an ankle tat of my Jamp. Retic. Python. But wonder about work. I wear skirts to the hospital and with my luck they would fire me...i see tats as a freedom of speech! They have something to say, they have meaning. Express on our bodies. But dancing would have been a problem too. The club did not allow tats. Society is very odd imho.

Hey, just focus on the analogy of getting it or not getting it, not the severity of liking a taste or changing appearance. It isn't about those. I'm trying to explain the "get it"/"don't get it" dichotomy.

Just because there is a trend/fad to get tattoos (which there IS, but that refers more to tramp stamps and the general idiotic tattoos). However, there are also people who got it not because or in some cases even despite the trend/fad. They simply like tattoos. They are not part of "the herd". They just like tattoos. I am one of those people.
