    Default Extremely horrible foot pain.

I'm in hell right now. Well I'm actually at a hostel in San francisco with my boyfriend. It's raining, and I can barely walk. I worked for 8 hours shifts three days straight in 7 inch heels before we came, and yesterday I walked around all day in flip flops. I was wearing flip flops standing with my back to the stairs and my heel of my left foot slipped off and stretched to the stair below it, so I think I overextended it or something.

It hurts so bad, I just want to cry, well actually I am because I feel like I'm ruining our trip. I can't walk on it, when I do there's a really sharp pain on my fifth metatarsal, the outside of my foot where the arch is between the heel and toes. Even when there's not weight on it I rotate it and bend it and it hurts. It's a little swollen and feels hot when I'm walking on it.

What is wrong?? I'm resting and not walking on it, took aleve and my BF went to get me an ice pack for it.

    What could it be???

You might have torn or strained your Achilles' tendon, the tendon that runs from your heel up the back of your ankle.

Ice and NSAIDs are good, try elevating it too. And of course, try to get in to see a dr. if it keeps hurting.

It won't be the achilles as it ends at the heel.
The 5th I'm pretty sure is on the outside of the foot.
There is about 100 muscles in the foot and it's highly likely a few of these were fatigued from long hours of over extension or contraction (i.e. squashed into silly but gorgeous shoes) and if I'm imagining the situation of the foot correctly it slipped into a position pretty much opposite to when it's incased in a torture bubble, sorry i mean shoe so it could just be a very angry muscle in which case you should just treat it as you would any strain, i.e. Rest Ice Compression Elevation.
There's also about 33 (?) joints in the foot and any of these may have been damaged, it's pretty easy to 'tear' ligaments as well.
If the first is no help, see a doc, maybe see a doc anyways.
Also if something makes it feel better, such as massaging it or keeping it warm it's probs not a bad idea. Ice is really needed to halt swelling, but if it's not swelling it's a good idea to keep it warm to aid circulation to the area and help healing.
I hope it gets better real soon and you can enjoy your holiday.

I agree that you should RICE it. Also get yourself an NSAID such as ibuprofen to help with the swelling.

If it really hurts that badly, you should go see your primary care physician and have him/her order an x-ray. It's probably just a sprain, but on the other hand, it could also be a 5th metatarsal avulsion fracture or a Jones fracture.
