    Default car rental agencies- advice needed!

    hope this is in the right place, but i would love for you ladies to share any advice on car rental agencies (good and bad).

    i am 25 and have a credit card. however, i am a smoker (cigarettes only!), so will this cause problems? will they charge me extra? should i tell them i smoke? i am planning on calling my insurance company to see if they cover me for rentals. if not, is it worth purchasing the extra money for insurance? what coverage should i buy?

    here's some i'm looking into:
    * avis
    * budget
    * thrifty
    * enterprise (heard good things, but they're more pricey)
    * advantage (heard not so good things, but they're cheap)
    * alamo
    * hertz
    * dollar
    * national

    Yes many have non-smoking cars, so you should let them know.

    As to your choices, Enterprise is always my last choice. In other words, I'd rather take public transportation then rent from Enterprise.

    I typically rent from Hertz and Dollar. Dollar is typically cheaper than other companies for weekday rentals or in heavy tourist areas (depends on where you're renting). You can find some good weekend deals from Hertz and they often have coupons too.

    I always purchase the extra insurance. As for the smoking, are you taking a long trip with the car? If not, just don't smoke in the car and it won't make any difference.

    I have always rented from Budget. I've never had any problems with them.

    As far as I know, you should let them know that you are a smoker and ask if they have smoking cars. MOST places will charge you if they give you a non-smoking car and you smoke in it. It makes it hard to rent out to non-smokers.

    I never get the extra insurance, but my insurance company insures the rental car as long as I call and let them know. If you do not have an insurance company that covers rentals, then I would get the collision damage (I believe that's what it's called). So, if you hit someone or someone hits you, you're covered.

    And be anally picky about what they mark on the car. Some walk you around the car to find any damages to the car before you take it out. I have made them mark down the smallest ding and paint chip. No way in hell I'mb going to be responsible for anything.
