    Default prozac v.s. wellburtin

Hi! My doctor prescribed me prozac 20mg but I have a follow up appointment in about 2-3 weeks and I just wanted some feedback/opinions if I should switch to Wellburtin or not. I don't like the loss of sexual interest with prozac and it did decrease my appetite with Prozac so far.. is there any side effects I should know about with Wellburtin? Thanks so much!

edit: oh and how is wellbutin in fatigue? do you get tired on it or more energy?

Did the Prozac already hurt your sex drive? It doesn't happen to everyone. As for me it decreased my appetite for a little while but it was only temporary. Kind of wish it wasn't

I'd probably give it a chance, SSRI's take a pretty long time to sort out with the side effects and to start working. By all means though, if you don't like it and the doc recommends it, switch to another medication.

Wellbutrin is not an SSRI, so it is known for not causing the common SSRI side effects like lack of sex drive and weight gain. The big worry with Wellbutrin is seizures, which it is known to trigger in people at extremely high doses. What people don't genereally know is that ALL anti-depressants have a seizure risk. Zoloft actually has a higher rate of seizure than Wellbutrin, but you'll never hear it referred to as the 'seizure' drug like Wellbutrin.

Wellbutrin can also make you a little shaky/anxious. It's more for lack of energy/depression than anxiety. It's also good for SAD and if bipolar is suspect-combined with other medications though.

If i ask my doctor to switch to Wellburtin.. I don't think it'll be a high dose so I don't think I have a very high rate of seizures.. but I have a lot of lack of energy.. so I don't want to get more tired then I am now..

Very few people do get seizures until you get into the mega doses. I've heard being on the XR also lowers the risk. They are some things that can increase your risk while on this, like being an actively purging bulimic, for example.

I never have taken Wellbutrin but I was on Prozac for a couple of years. Prozac did help my mood a lot but I gained like 30 pounds because I was sort of just content to sit around and do nothing. I also had no sex drive but that could have been in part due to the fact that I'd just been seriously heartbroken, which was why I was on the prozac.

Wellbutrin and Prozac are not considered to be interchangeable, I thought. Did your doc recommend Wellbutrin during an earlier visit, or are you just curious about it? Wellbutrin is NOT indicated for anxiety, for one, so if you suffer from anxiety, I doubt it will be prescribed. I am actually surprised that you were prescribed Prozac, as docs tend to go for the newer stuff these days, simply because they kick in faster. Prozac has a very long half-life and takes like 4-6 weeks or something to be considered completely effective. Most docs go with the new-school shorter half-life stuff. I would think that if your doc was switching you off Prozac, he/she'd switch you on to another SSRI (Effexor, Zoloft, Lexapro).

Anyway, this is not very helpful, I'm just musing.

You should talk to your doctor about why the move from an SSRI to a dopamine inhibitor. Is this to better treat whatever problem you have or is it pill-hopping? Wellbutrin and Celexa seems to be a popular combo these days for those that would benefit from both treatments. Wellbutrin is likely to cause a little bit of insomnia, dry mouth, mild shakes and blurred vision. There are more side effects but these appear to be the most prominent. You will also want to ask your doctor if you're taking Wellbutrin XL or the older Wellbutrin. The XL has a fancy coating which allows the active ingredient to be more slowly and consistently released into the body thus reducing sharp side effects. Good luck!

You don't say why you were prescribed Prozac, so I can't really help you yet. I've taken Wellbutrin with absolutely no side effects except some dizziness in the beginning which wore off after a week or so.

It was prescribed for depression. Like TOTH said, you'd be better off with Lexapro or Effexor for anxiety, if that's what you have.

I was personally on prozac and hated it! I became A sexual. Not only did I lose my sex drive but also any sense of sexuality and gender. It was kinda scary. Also I couldn't be happy or sad while on it. A year or so later I went on wellbutrin and it was wonderful, I could finally function like a real person. I had no adverse effects. I was on a pretty high dose for a while. After being on wellbutrin for sometime, I felt like I could safely go off it. I've been off it for over 3 years and am doing very well. Being on these types of meds is trial and error. Just don't give up, theres something out there that will work for you. Hope this helps.

Never took Prozac, but I did take wellbutrin. The only side effect that I noticed about it was the fricken INSOMNIA...I did not get a good night's sleep for the first four nights I was on it, BUT I did notice, that even with such little sleep, I did have energy and I feel much more motivated than I used to. I had a good wellbutrin experiece. If needed, I'd go back on it.

I won't ever go back on another anti-depressant. I've been on all kinds, and all of them have given me many bad side effects but the worst side effect of all was a grand mal seizure back in Sept! I was working at my day job and the next thing I know is I'm sitting in this chair and everyone around me is asking me if I'm ok. Apparently, I lost consciousness and collapsed on the floor and have a grand mal seizure. It was from being on Zoloft and Wellbutrin SR. I've been on Paxil & Prozac which gave me these involuntary twitches or jumps in my arms & legs and tremors, I come to find out from my neurologist those were pre-seizure activity! Besides the risk of seizures, you hear other negative things about SSRI's like people commiting suicide and other problems. Doctors IMO are way over prescribing those things, it's a chemical that you don't know how it'll affect you. It took a good year and a half for those involuntary movements to completely go away after being off the Prozac & Paxil and I've also gotten these "electric shock" feelings in my brain from them which I also learned are mini seizures that take a long time to go away after being off them.

Only take them if you're so depressed there's no other option, don't take them if you're just feeling a little bit of the blues.

Let me also add to my post above that I NEVER had a seizure before until then. And Lexapro totally messed up my Liver enzymes, caused me to gain like 30 pounds and mimicked the signs & symptoms of Fibro Myaligia. I do acknowlege that I'm much more sensitive on taking meds than most people, I might just have a sensitive body compared with most people. But please be careful with this stuff, take it only if you have to.

I take BOTH Wellbutrin and Prozac, plus another anti-depressant, been taking them together for years. I've taken them on their own before, but Prozac didn't do a damn thing alone and Wellbutrin didn't do 'all' that the docs wanted them to do by themselves either. Right now I'm at 120mg day of Prozac and 600+mg day of Wellbutrin. I've got odd tolerance though, so I take waaaaaaaay more than most people do.

I will say though, when I started the 600mg+ of Wellbutrin a day it was known that I have seizures beforehand. I still have seizures and holy shit they fucking suck when they happen. I had one at work over the summer and I bit through my damn tongue and flopped around like a fish for a while. Totally a hot way to clear a stage at a strip club. If your doc doesn't want to put you on it because they think you will be too high of a seizure risk, trust him and don't take it.

Be aware that you are making a complete switch from one type of medication to another. Lexapro, Zoloft and Prozac are SSRIs (selective seratonin reuptake inhibitors), meaning that they block receptors in your brain to keep more seratonin in your bloodstream.

Wellbutrin (generic: Bupropion hydrochloride) is a norepinephrine and dopamine reuptake inhibitor (NDRI). It doesn't touch your seratonin at all. But it does block absorption of dopamine and norepinephine, keeping more in your bloodstream, which clinical studies have shown will improve and elevate your mood. It also has been shown to increase alertness and response times. Even better, it has no negative sexual side effects, and most people who take Wellbutrin actually lose weight, rather than gain it.

The seizure risk from Wellbutrin is small, unless you have a risk of seizures or you are taking enormous doses.

I was on Celexa first and then Lexapro for a couple of weeks until I realized that every single sexual urge had been drained out of my body. Which was just as well, because nothing worked anyway. I did the research, found Wellbutrin, and basically told my psychiatrist that we were going to Wellbutrin.

I'm now at 400 - 600 mg of Wellbutrin SR a day, along with somewhere between 6 and 8 mg of Ativan daily. As others have noted, Wellbutrin will not help you with anxiety, but Ativan sure will.

Be sure to get the generic on both, since they've been off-patent for years.

I've never been on prozac, but I've been on drugs in that family of anti-depressants. I prefer Wellbutrin to all of the ones I've tried. It's the only one that didn't fuck with my sex drive, and actually helped with my depression.

my doctor prescribed me prozac because she said that I have the symptoms of depression (such as excess chronic fatigue like tired ALL the time even if i sleep 8-12 hours a day, dont feel like going out much and really bad mood swings).. so I don't think I have much anxiety problems.. Since i've started taking Prozac again.. my sexual drive is down the drain.. its not there at all.. and im not interested in sex which I usually am all the time.. (lol)..

The only reason why my doctor prescribed me on Prozac is because i've been on it before a couple years ago and I didn't have much side effects then so she just thought it wouldnt hurt to try the same pill again.. but this time around.. my side effects are really bad sexually and loss of appetite.. so I'm just thinking about going to my doctor soon and discuss if I can change to Wellburtin which wouldnt hurt my sex drive and still help with my mood swings and fatigue..

When I took Wellbutrin, I felt a little cracked out. And I got drunk incredibly fast. Like two beers got me fuuucked up. I didn't notice any difference in my sexuality, but at the time, my bf was living two hours away, so I wasn't really having any sex. I lost interest in smoking cigarettes, and I lost a little weight, but not much.
I've heard about Prozac being a real 'happy pill', and people really glad they're on it. But Wellbutrin didn't make me happy. In fact, I'm not sure what it did.. I still have some 150mg and some 300mg, but they're just sitting in my medicine cabinet.

when i took wellbutrin i had insufferable insomnia. not great for a sleep-deprived overachieving teenager (at the time). i think that was before it was reformulated.

prozac is not a "happy pill." SSRIs won't do shit for someone who doesn't have an imbalance of serotonin.
