A friend of mine wants to know if she can get a refund for last years taxes (o6). She never filed, but she could have got 400$ back. she doesn't owe anything. Can she still get that money? If yes, then what are the necessary things to do?
thanks!

Isn't that illegal to not file? I would think that if she did that, they might get on her case about it and audit her!
nah... when she files this year she should do an ammendment and file last years... thats what im doing. I didnt file last year either....
If the IRS owes you money, they don't care if you don't file. After all, you just gave them extra free money that belongs to you!

You have 3 years to file a tax return. I believe they do penalize you slightly, so she may not get the full $400...but I'm not sure. I do know that they will not get on her case. They'll just process the return and cut her a check for whatever $$ amount it needs to be and mail it off.
If she owed money, they'd be on her ass pretty quickly and making sure her other years have been filed...but if she is owed money, they'll probably more hope that she doesn't file before the 3 year deadline.
