I spend Christmas in Hawaii, usually on Maui. There has been heavy, constant rain and wind on all the islands lately. It's still warm though, and the surf is a little rougher than in the summer, particularly on north/northwest facing beaches (Ka'anapali-Kapalua). South Maui is a littler calmer, generally.
It's rained on me my last 2 trips, but nothing that didn't blow through in half a day or so. Temps still in the low 80s during the day, around 70 at dawn. Can't beat it when everyone back home is freezing.
Kihei averages about only 12 inches of rain per year, most of it comes in winter. Just bring a light jacket. you can buy an umbrella there if you need one. Storms do create runoff into bays which can make snorkeling impossible. Winter is a great time to go because the humpbacks are wintering in the Maui channel. Maui o ka noi!
I was watching the news last night and there has been horrible rain and flooding this week. Not good.
is it me or does it seem like the winters are getting worse in hawaii?
I lived there up until about 3 1/3 years ago and some of the winter reports I've heard this year and last seem worse than I remember.
