    Default acid reflux & anxiety?

a girl at work told me (yeah, great way to start a story, right? lol.. but this girl actually usually knows what shes talking about!) that acid reflux can cause or contribute to anxiety.

lately, ive been having this stange feeling, not necessarily painful but uncomfortable, in my neck. i dont even want to say my throat bc its not a sore throat. its like in the bottom of my neck lol. which to me, sounds like acid refulx. and i didnt tell her about that til after she said it. we were talking about my panic attacks bc she recently got on medicine and it didnt even occur to me that it *could* be acid reflux. i thought it was part of my panic attacks.

is this crazy? or could taking prilosec or something for reflux help my anxiety?

I think the problem lies with the fact that many can't breath properly when they have acid reflux. Also burping up burning crap in the throat may make it swell at times. Acid reflux can be dangerous. Many take this serious. I'm not talking good ole heartburn...but when you feel that lump in the throat and can't breath while your throat is on fire, you burp and it comes up into your nose...holy crap! Yea, that breeds anxiety. Symptoms can mimic a heart attack.

Also anxiety comes with a host of problems....many of these symptoms mimic a heart attack which mimic acid reflux! So yea.

Sure hun! If you are eating and you have an anxiety disorder many many other host of problems come in. Usually anxiety causes heartburn, or acid reflux. If we are anxious we don't digest all our food well, and tend to breath more from our chest, etc. All of which will make our bodies go out of sync.

Panic attacks (or anxiety attacks) make many people feel that lump in the throat.

BUT, hun it go be either way. Without having it checked out, i don't know. Just the symptoms that anxiety can cause us to feel i am aware of. Acid reflux is on that list for many people.

Hmm have you tried anything for heartburn? If so does it help? If not try something? And eat bland foods for a few days (i know that sucks)

Oh no Britt. I was hoping you'd never have to feel this. I have it and it sucks.

It's not anything that burns, it's a fluttery, hard lump in my stomach that feels like it has a tail that extends into my chest. Does that sound like it?

I don't recall if you're taking any meds for your anxiety. If you're not, it might be time. As always, you're welcome to PM if you need to.

    Feel better baby girl.

yes! thats what it feels like. i just couldnt explain it. kind of like i have butterflies all the time for no reason, and then it carries up to where my throat and my chest meet. not painful, just uncomfortable. and at times, like a dull version of heartburn at the bottom of my throat.

no meds, i have been trying to get a psychiatrist but they all take so damn long to get in. a few weeks ago, the earliest appt i could get was the 2nd week of february. the girl at work i was talking to about this said it didnt take her long to see her dr the first time though so shes going to give me the info.

    Feel better baby girl.

Honey, I have another question. Do you actually feel anxiety that you don't have meds for your anxiety?

For example, I have tons of Xanax available but if my bottle is not near me at all times, I panic. And I'm constantly counting my pills to make sure I'd be covered if I do have one.

I have panic disorder, not just anxiety. It's basically anxiety about feeling anxiety. I know it sounds funny, but the terror just grips you.

I'm glad you're going to see someone. Let me know if you need any more info. I'm getting to be an old pro on describing the symptoms unfortunately.

hmm. i didnt think of that. i dont know that i feel anxiety over it, but i think about it a LOT. how things would be easier, but what if this and what if that. what if i dont like it? what if it makes me feel worse? what if i have negative side effects? what if they won't prescribe me enough? what if no one will prescribe it? its contantly in my head.

I'm confused (easily it seems here) So, the anxiety is causing a constant lump feeling in the throat?

no, not a lump. my stomach feels like it has butterflies and hurts sometimes. then it almost feels like heartburn, but not exactly painful, going up to where my throat and my chest meet. that spot right when my throat starts, where you can feel the gap between the bones. in the back, it feels like a strange dull heartburn-like feeling. tight, and uncomfortable.

the first time i noticed this was the last time i had a major panic attack, about 2 weeks ago. it lasted all day, building up, and then the attack itself lasted longer than normal. i couldnt breathe and i *couldn't* calm down. ive never had one that lasted that long. but the whole time that feeling was there in my throat. i described it to my mom as being in my neck bc somehow that makes more sense to me than saying its in my throat.

at first i thought i was getting a cold or the flu or something. and then i thought it was heartburn, except it wasnt my heart. but that feeling hasnt really gone away since then.

its almost like.. you know how you feel anxiety in your chest? and your chest feels tight and tingly kind of? at least for me. its like that feeling is in my throat now too. and when i breathe in, it intensifies.

Good god. Hun can you get to a doctor and tell him/her you have panic attacks and need something to calm down?

I had no idea. I know the feeling but it is a different condition with me, but not a lump, kinda like a brick on my chest. It was what i knew it would be...But anxiery is a friggin pain in the ass. I worry ALOT about my health too. Like DylanAngel says about having her meds close...that's me too. And if a holiday rolls around or a hurricane i make sure i have my script filled. Mine are Beta Blockers. But they do help ease anxiety that i get as well.

*wishing you lots help with this*

^ive tried my reg dr but they wont give it to me. i still go to my pediatrician (haha, i know that sounds soo silly! i dont do well with change.. and really i dont technically go there anymore since i only go til college is over and thats in a week. the office serves from birth to college) and they wont prescribe meds like that.

im switching over to an internist (thats what theyre called, right?) soon so i'm hoping she'll be able to help me out.

    what are beta blockers for?

Internal med. Doctor, yea they can help with many. Mine is Internal medicine and he's my Family doctor.

Beta Blocker, for heart. Congestive heart failure ...but the best is these drugs calm you down as well.
