Default Resumes: Yeah, I Was a Stripper

I'm just wondering. If I were to go into a job interview and be completely up front about my work experience, what would happen?

I'm guessing the interviewer would think I have awesome sales skills...

    or

Think that I was the devil incarnate...

    Just curious...

I wouldn' t be able to hire you. The higher ups would consider it too much of a risk in that you might be recognized by a client as having been a stripper. Although, in the advertising industry, strippers are way more virtuous than most of those whores.

We have a few in my company including me, but resumes say something else like bartender, waitress or in my case, general manager, which I was for over a year and my former boss was nice enough to keep as my title, for reference purposes, even after I returned to the stage.

It can go either way, really.

I was honest when I went for a "real" job several years ago and didn't have a problem. I got the job!

^^^Really? That is very cool. Do you mind if I ask what you do?

FWIW, i think that most ppl dont think stripping is sales, they think it's being hot and naked and grinding on people. however, if you worded it differently, like, you worked in a strip club and your job was to upsell rooms, and close sales. essentially your job was to get people spending.
now that says you have sales skills without quite saying you were a stripper.

    Love it!

But mentioning it at all invites them to ask you to elaborate. And if you lie and get caught, kiss the job goodbye.

<----Not a dancer. But I just wanted to state my honest opinion.

I don't think most normal people realize that being a stripper involves sales skills or hustling skills or even people skills at all.. I know I sure as hell didn't before I came to this board, and I am not judgemental of strippers (otherwise why the heck would I be here lol). Just my two cents..

Yup and with the narrowmindedness out there, you could tell them all that and they'll still continue to think of you as a dirty girl.

I hate having to lie (by ommission) about what I did. Stripping was a big part of my life and contributed to me being able to grab and get what I want out there in a man's world. Shame that I have to bury all that experience.

It really would depend on who is doing the hiring. If I were you I would just make up a lie like bartending or have a friend who works in an office as a fake reference. It's just too risky. I do hiring and wouldn't hold it against anyone but I know not all of my peers feel the same way. And even for some of the managers who wouldn't hold it against the applicant (or even view it as a plus), they might be dicks in other ways, like expecting you to dress and act all hot at work or sleep with them or whatever. And women interviewers might get catty about it unfortunately.

Also at a big company, many folks including very corporate folks who might not even reside in the office you apply to might see your resume and if even just one of them has a problem with it you are sunk. On the whole I'd say it's a bigger risk when applying for a bigger company since people will be afraid to make waves, at a smaller office there might be a pretty chill or entrepenurial atmosphere and they might not care. I've worked in both big and small companies.

The problem is if you are attractive many people doing the interview will just assume (correctly in this case) this is a BS line and figure you were dancing and then it's the same as if you just came right out and said it - worse actually since they might see this as being deceitful during the interview process.

I can totally see why that would suck, curious if you've also encountered push back from women who know about that, not just from the man's world so to speak.

It might depend a lot on what job you're applying for... Unless what you're applying for relates to fun, casual sales (cell phones, merchandise, etc) or your looks, I would recommend not talking about it unless asked specifically. The interviewer will most likely see it as irrelevant to the job anyway.

No push back at all because nobody knows. I was like Batgirl...mild mannered during the day and all tight outfitted badass by night.

And it wore me the hell out. Being duplicitous sucks.

(and nobody will know unless you're planning to tell them! At which point, I'll have to show all of your manly coworkers your kitten pics! )

Awhile back, as an experiment, I included my stripping experience on the resume I had on Career Finder. I was looking for a job in sales and thought it would be interesting to see what kind of bites I would get. Well, it turned out that i got no bites. However, one club owner/manager/whoever called my home at 9:30 p.m. on a Friday night to see if I wanted to come and work at the Flight Club in Detroit, Michigan. My told him I was at work and not to call our house that late. The guy was totally rude. It was a strange interaction, especially since I hadn't told my husband I put that on my resume, lol. I took it off shortly thereafter.

Wow, that's such a shame. I was hoping that employers might be more hip than that. No bites except for a a strip club owner? Bleh...

If you put 'stripper' on your CV, you are liable to be judged by the steroetype, not by you as a person.

Sure, if you're a dancer, you'll have developed pretty good 'people' skills, but as the stereotype is different, you won't be credited for that.

When you are interviewed for any postion, one thing the interviewer will be thinking of is "will she fit in with the rest of the team", and unfortunately, due to the negative connotations of being a dancer, the answer is no.

More likely they'll have visions of you tottering in on high heels, wearing a very short skirt and a dangerously unbuttoned blouse.

You'll also be the subject of gossip around the office.

All in all, I'd suggest omitting 'stripper' from your CV.

Well, Ive gotten 2 job offers after telling them I was a dancer. But Im going into hair - its kind of accepted in a way...

But I didnt put it on my resume. I put freelance model and when they asked I told. It was no biggie. Now, if I was going into a different field I would probably think twice about mentioning dancing...

As cool and easygoing as my small office is, I still wouldn't tell any of the higher ups that I danced. Only a couple people know, but they are people who I am friends with outside of the office. None of them would ever dare mention it to anyone else because 1) there is no reason as I am not a threat to their job security, 2) they don't want to jeopardize my job because the whole point of my being there has been to ease their workloads, and 3) I have enough dirt on them involving what they've done in their current positions that it just wouldn't make any sense.

I was honest. Told the hospital i was also dancing. She said a stripper, i said yes, i need to work and support myself, i live alone.

I got hired. BUT, paid later when employees became jerks. HR was cool about it. Others...

try saying " self employed sales position" name the company your stage name (usually it sounds sorta professional with industries written after it!)

list your job description...leave out the stripping side of it, focus entirely on the fact you were self employed, worked from contracts, made sales, reached targets etc.

only give up that it was stripping once you get into your intervie. but still dont say stripper. say it was entertaining based.... make them squeeze it out of you. if you make the job sound glowing from the start, byu the time they find out it was stripping, they will already love you and it will be glossed over

i swear. ive written my bfs cv so many times, not lying per se, but elobrating some job areas to make them sound better, chuicking in some sort of sales targets and figures, and making each job sway towards it being a sales based position.

he had his cv done prefessionaly, sent it out, got no bites. i ripped it apart, and within 2 weeks he had 3 amazing job offers way above what he would have been capable of had he left the truth as it was.

    oops, my bad

I hire sales people and this one would be tough for me.

However, I'll say this...I look for strong talent, and as long as you have a college degree and show some desire and sales ability, I'd hire a former stripper.

However, I think it would be best to not own up to it. Not that I think it's anything to be embarassed over, but it's taking a risk to put it out there.

It depends what kind of job you're applying for. I put dancing down on an application for a waitressing job and got the job. But I think a lot of office jobs would frown upon it.
