    Default I need dress advice.

Okay so my boyfriend's work (Subaru repair shop) is holding a formal party at a REALLY nice restraunt next week and he is taking me as his date. Now I am torn on how to dress, and here's why...

My BF, Nick, swears up and down that he's only told one or two people about my job, but that EVERYONE there says he has the hottest girlfriend of all the mechanics (though, they say he has to prove I'm real first.. lol). So, I of course want to uphold this reputation of hottness, but also look as classy and glam as possible so I won't fit into some dumb white trash stripper stereotype. So here are my three options:

1- I have a long cream colored gown, straight with an empire waist. It has wide shoulder straps, and is just long enough to cover my feet. If I chose this one, I'd probably go with a simple hairstyle, like a low ponytail with a few curled strands around my face. Makeup would be dark brown and gold based. And flat gold ballet slippers.

2- A knee-length black dress with white polka dots. Spaghetti straps. Wide red sash around the middle that ties in the back. I really don't want to wear heels, so I have no idea what shoes I'd wear with this. Definately have my hair up in a high ponytail with bangs curled, more retro looking. Smoky eyes, red lips, and probably red nails.

3- I could work extra hard this week and buy myself a new dress. I saw one at the mall that is a knee-length dark blue, but I haven't even thought of accessorizing cause I would like to use one I already own if I can, although a little spoiling of myself would be pleasent.

I assume most of the other women will be wearing shorter dresses, which is why I lean towards #2, but at the same time, I want to look different and hide bruises... I really don't have a problem being a little dressier than the others, I can strut my shit either way. Both #1 and #2 would be going for a more retro vibe, but #1 is more red-carpet glam, while #2 is a little more toned down... so I'm really lost.

This probably didn't make any sense, did it, lol.

Oh well, any advice you could give would be appreciated.

A formal? I'd think option #1 from the descriptions. That just says elegant red carpet princess to me. Knee length are typically more semi-formal, although the little details and embellishments could make or break it.

Yeah, tonight I'll probably try both on and take some pics... since I've lost about 20 lbs since the last time i wore either, maybe they fall different or something...

I say go with option 1. Nothing is sexier than a woman who can be classy and formal, while remaining fun and resourceful.

I did the gown thing too at a formal Xmas party for Brad's company and boy, was I seriously overdressed. My outfit was right for the venue (a wedding hall type place) but most women had on a simple dress or dress pants and top.

You can never go wrong with a simple cocktail length black dress. I say go buy something new. If you pick a dress with classic lines, you'll be able to use it forever.

ETA: I just noticed that you said they were mechanics. My Brad is also blue collar. Don't wear the gown. If the other women are anything like the wives at our party, they won't be wearing something as elaborate.

    Definitely, Little. Black. Dress

I prefer Nordstrom's Little Black Dress selection.

You should be able to find something with all these selections and many are reasonably priced.

I spoke to Nick very very briefly and he said he prefers the cream gown, but he had to hang up to work on his computer. I'll call him back in a bit and try to find out more about the party, his coworkers, and if he knows about the other women coming to the party.

I tried on the black/polka dot number and it looks just plain frumpy on me now that i've lost weight, so that one is gone. And the thought of a new dress is highly, highly tempting, although all the work that I'd have to put in... not so much.

As for the little black dress idea... I don't have one cause honestly I've always been terrified of the LBD concept. So stupid, I know... but I really have no idea how to choose a dress that would look good on me...

Thank you so much guys! I'd be so lost without you.

Can you describe yourself at all? Like, your shape? Are you curvy, skinny, hippy, busty etc?

Then we could suggest types of dresses (and again LBD at Nordstrom is great for just getting ideas).

And never be afraid of the LBD. It's your friend because it never goes out of style, is always classy and can hide a multitude of sins. Trust me on that one!

I'm tall (5'10") with long legs. Definately pear-shaped. My hips got wider when I was pregnant and stayed that way. I'm just a 34B, so not very busty. And I'm pretty thin now, I weigh in at 133, but my thighs are still pretty, uh, don't wanna say fat but they are definately... there.

    Hope that helps.. lol

That helps! You could go for an empire waist or one with an a-line skirt. If you need me to, I'll post examples, but I think you have the idea.

    Ditto.
A couple years ago we were invited to an anniversary ball for my boyfriend's car dealership. It was at one of the nicest venues in town, invitations said formal/black tie attire and I was in your position too. I had to defend my reputation (oy) as the hottie snatched up by the cradle robber in the tune-up department. (Haha, indeed.)
I wore my gorgeous black and white polka dot cocktail dress (that cost and arm and two legs as Nordstrom) and ta da..... most people were in jeans. Although it's better to be overdressed.... well, I'd stay away from red carpet attire.

ETA: And the dress was worn by Gwen Stefani a couple weeks later at a red carpet. Which made me feel soooo much better.
