    Default Retin-A for Acne scars?

I'm so sick of my acne scars and the thread about ordering prescriptions from Mexico is making me want to buy something. And I'm usually so anti-drug anything. ha!

What do people use for acne scars? Dark spots. Is it Retin-A?

I won't take pills. I did that as a kid and I think that's what destroyed my gut.

I think Retin-A is good for all types of skin pigmentation since my doctor said he'd write me a script for it once I'm done breastfeeding. You know, for the stretch marks.

Well I ordered it. The goal is flawless skin.

Shipping takes a while though. It's like 2 weeks!

My experience with Retin-A is that it takes a long time for things to get better. Like, you'll be way grosser than you dreamed you could be for 3-6 months while waiting for it to take effect. Unless your problems are so bad that you can't think of another alternative, I wouldn't use it, especially while you're stripping and expected to be pretty. It dries your skin out, makes you red and flaky, and you'll look a lot worse than you did before until you've used it for a long while. If you're not worried about active acne or lines, I'd look into some kind of collagen therapy instead.

True it can. This varies from person to person. Always start with a patch test on a very small part of the face. Expect some redness, tingling and burning and then comes the peeling. This is why my Doc. always said a little tiny pea size to start on a very small area. I am a lucky one. I have extremely light skin, and i use full strength and only peel once in a while.

Boy, the benefits for me far outweigh the crappy sun damage i have. For me i notice a difference in about 3 days. Some peeling. And to help with the dry skin (which i don't get with Retin A) you're to put a moisturizer on over the Retin A. Always wash face first, and dry, wait 15 minutes before you apply Retin A. I LOVE this stuff. I was on it for years. The i stopped. Got lazy, did not see my doctor as i should. Then he gave me a ton of samples...that stuff is expensive over here.

Personally I found Azaelic acid to be more effective than Retin-A. Watch out cause the stuff stings going on. It won't help with any damage that goes down to the collagen layers, but it does improve surface texture.

^^^ Zabrina, where would I get azelic acid? Is it good for the ice pick kind of scars? I've only got 2 bad pits, and I got them while on retin a after popping two pimples. (retin a makes skin more difficult to heal, or heal slower) either way, it help with major acne right away, and I didn't really have lines before that, but I had pretty clear and even toned skin, but still large pores and ice pick scars. That's what I need help with, is that what azealic acid is good for? How do I obtain this stuff?

Oh, and if you get that irritated for retin a you are using too much too frequently. I always start with a tiny tiny dab onece a week, next wek move it to twice, then after two or so weeks move it on up to three, and after I feel it's been enough time, I use it very day. Except for the initial purge wich lasts about a month for me, for clear skin and even tone it only takes about a month for the ickyness to go away, and aftyer six months, not including real scars- not red spots but actual pits, my skin looks far better.

Can I use the acid in combo with retin a? Does the acid have any anti aging properties?

Yeah the acid helps with anti-aging. It helps anything on the surface, like discoloration, surface uneveness and it does help a little with pores. As for scars like ice-pick or my rolling scars, sadly no topical treatments are going to do much help there.
I was prescribed azelic acid by my derm. The prescription name is Finacea. Reminds me I need to order more. If I find a place to order it without a prescription I'll share. I haven't been to the derm in a while.

Thanks for all the info ladies. I'm not looking forward to the intial purge. I've worked so hard to get my skin where it is.

My current job is image-conscious BUT it's not stripping so I can get away with a month of bad skin. But man, I'm nervous about it.

Oh no, lol. I got into my mom's retin-a in high school... I thought it was like, super strong zit cream... I was VERY unhappy when my skin was flaking off of my face!

Would you be able to afford some laser surgery? It's expensive, but I'd rather do it that way (but I'm also the kind of person who wants it extreme and done and then it's over).

Another possibility to try: AHA. Go to the nearest Walgreens and look for a white round tub with a black lid, it says Alpha Hydroxy face cream, 8% of a 70% solution. Worked wonders on my bacne scars, and I use it once every other day on my face. Not expensive at all ( I think under 6).

Some people also have good luck with retinoids (yes, retin-a is better, but if it becomes to harsh for you, get an otc retinoid; check makeupalley for recs); and also with camilla oil (ebay is best for this).

    Good luck!

I've been using the retin-a for the past week with the hydroquinone. It's been working. FINALLY the hydroquinone is doing something. I read somewhere that it works well in conjunction with the retin-a. And it's true. At least for my skin.

You can also use glycolic acid peels and TCA peels. The solution can be bought (legally) on the Internet for about $35-50 for 5-10 peels. These are great for exfoliation, clearing acne, getting rid of red spots from old zits and sun damage.
