    Default Generic Adderall vs. Brand?

Can anyone share their experiences here?

I tried generic once and didn't like it, but I can't remember why. (I think maybe the high didn't feel as "clean," or the crash was bad, or something...?)

I don't have insurance, and I'm outrageously broke, so I can't believe I'm considering spending $300 on brand when I could get the generic for $150.

But I have to complete a semester's work of schoolwork in the next week and a half (because I suck like that), so....If I get the generic and it isn't working for me, I'm screwed.

Any thoughts from my fellow attention-deficit-disordered friends here would be much appreciated!

    Thanks!

I always thought the generic versions of prescription drugs were the same chemically, they were just manufactured by different companies and were maybe shaped or colored differently...

I've been taking the generic form but I've never taken the brand name of it. I like it just fine. It gets the job done so I can.

I thought that the generics were the same, too. I can't help with the Adderall question, but call around to a few different pharmacies and price shop. They can charge whatever they want for generics, so prices can vary a lot.

I've found the best prices at Costco and Walmart. Remind them you are a cash customer and ask for any discount you may be eligible for, like AAA.

Can you ask your doctor for samples?

I've taken the brand and the generic but it seems like I am WAY more thirsty when I take the generic. Other than that it doesn't seem like there is much of a difference. I've gotten 40mg/day worth of generic at Wal-Mart for $50 and the brand name for the same amount was $150.

    ^thanks guys!

PCQ, the active ingredient is always the same, but the fillers and the method of delivery (the way the active ingredient is chemically/molecularly "packaged," I guess) can be different. Which can lead to different experiences for different people, but I'm still interested in other people's experience....

Nah, because it's a controlled substance (amphetamine). They can't have samples laying around the office.

It is weird to me how much prices--for brand as well as generic--can vary so much from pharmacy to pharmacy. It seems like there should be some sort of govt controls on this...?

Anyone know any more interesting facts about drug pricing? I'm curious about this.

eta: Good point about the AAA discount, though; I just found out about this. I should have triple A, but of course, I don't.

thanks, ginger! Wow...I think prices vary a lot from state to state. Because here in CA, most pharmacies charge about $300 for 90 5-mg pills (the regular, not the XR.) That's a lot, isn't it? I seem to recall that I paid a lot less than that when I lived in MA and NY....

Oh, but maybe you have insurance.

Have you tried any other meds for the ADHD? If so, do you like the adderall best?

^^Yeah, the prices REALLY vary from state to state. In NC my Adderall cost more than it does here in TN, and it cost less in GA than it does in TN. Sometimes it varies as much as $80 or so. Sadly Wal-Mart is ALWAYS the cheapest when it comes to my scripts no matter if they are brand name or generic. I can get my Prozac for $4 there but if I got them at Walgreens or Eckerd they're more than $50.

I've taken Strattera, Ritalin, and Concerta in place of my Adderall and I liked Strattera the best because it didn't killl my appetite but no matter how much they gave me I was still kinda hyper and couldn't finish doing one thing at a time. I've been taking Adderall on and off for more than 10 years, and I deal with the appetite issues because it's what works the best for me.

thank you so much for the responses, ginger.

Actually, I just remembered that there is a Wal-Mart not too far from here...maybe I should call. CostCo is cheaper, but they never seem to have the brand in stock, and I kinda need it NOW, so I can't wait for them to order it. I wonder if Wal-Mart is the same...? (yes, i know Wal-Mart is evil, but. I am too broke to be socially conscious right at this moment.)

It sounds like our ADHD manifests differently: My diagnosis is "combined type", but I tend to be more spacey/inattentive and less hyper (though I sometimes feel mildly manic). Also, I'm kinda thick, so loss of appetite is never really a terrible thing for me! I actually find that the adderall doesn't affect my appetite too much; even if I'm not hungry while the meds are effective, I get hungry and eat when each dose begins to wear off.

Okay, I found some generic adderall I had laying around from an old scrip and took some.

It's making me feel kinda speedy and jangly, which the brand doesn't seem to do. I guess this is why I didn't like it. Damn.

You know how your face feels weird and tight and flushed when you do too much coke or any other CNS? Like...I dunno, it feels like all the little muscles and ligaments in your cheeks/under your eyes are tightening up in an uncomfortable way? That's what I'm feeling. The brand doesn't do this unless I take an unusually high dose, or use it to stay up for more than 24 hours...

I'd really like to try some of the other ADHD drugs, just to see if there's something I like better, but I'd hate to spend a bunch of money on something that doesn't work for me...Plus then I'd have to wait a month before being able to get meds again.

I get my generic at Walgreens. My ins. didn't cover it for a long time, and it was $50 for 30 20mg pills. I have taken brand name as well, and havn't noticed a difference.

Now I get it for $5, or $15, pretty rad. Try the generic. If you have to push it in time for exams, it will be just fine.

I have tried Strattera before, and it didn't do shit. I don't suggest you snort ADHD meds as well. Don't ask......
