    Default Clinics & Basic Info

I don't quite understand how free clinics work.
Can I give a fake name and address? If I put down my real name will they send bills to my house? Do they do a background check to figure out their sliding scale?

I can't quite grasp the concept.

I'm interested in going on birth control and having a Gyno exam (never had one) but I worry about shit being mailed to my house and my parents discovering that *gasp* their little stripper has S-E-X!!!

Yeah I'm weird.. but seriously... what's the deal?

Most clinics will not mail anything to your home. They are usually very discreet.

It may be different in differing states, but that has been my experience...they usually take your info for demographic purposes...and for filing purposes, but don't actually use the info for sending mail, etc. I think a friend had an STD panel run and they didn't even call her...she had to go in and get the results.

Maybe stop in at the clinic and voice your concerns and see what they say?

I used to go to a free clinic pretty far from my home when I was 18, b/c I didnt want my mom to know, and said I didnt have a job and that my boyfriend made like 8.00 an hour. (i was really paranoid about my mom finding out, so I lied), everything was free. I went there for like 3 years, and the last year I went gave them my info and I just had to pay 97 dollars in 4 installments (they sent me a bill, so yeah stuff somes in the mail).

Why not use a friends address ( with permission ) just to be safe and save yourself the stress ? If you have a planned parenthood near you, they may be able to refer a low cost Dr. or even have a Dr. that can do the exam and write you a prescription. They practically hand the pills out like candy. I think sometimes you don't even need an exam for them.

I go to Planned Parenthood and get my yearly gyno exam and birthcontrol from there based on income. I get my services free. If I get sick I can get a medical exam for $20 + cost of prescriptions.
They give the option to recieve test results, etc by mail/phone, for privacy. I give my real information to them because I had to in order to get the services through the state.

I get my Planned Parenthood services free, as well, since I currently have no income.

They can't call and leave results or mail anything HIPPA (patient Privacy act)

They mail you ANYTHING about your exam, you sue! It's now against the law. And make that very clear to them, just mention HIPPA, they will know what that means. Reason many don't understand why they can't at least mail info. is because anyone can open it or it may go to the wrong address.

    Good luck hun

I have gone to PP and I have never had anything sent to me. Usually they make you pay when services are rendered so they would not send you a bill. They asked me if they can call and say "This is PP" or "This is the doctors office"

You are protected by HIPPA, as Pam says. The clinic here in town charges $15 a visit, but its website states that it will not turn away ppl with an inability to pay. I don't think they will do a full pelvic exam and pap though.

Check out this info for NYC:
