? About Passports to Canada and New Years Eve

Ok, so I know as of Jan. 1st you need a passport to get into canada, even driving. Up until then you just need id.
A few of my friends and I want to go to montreal for New Years Eve...now obv. it's too late to get a passport.
Does anybody have any clue how that would work. Would you be kind of "grandfathered" because you were in the country before the new year...or would you not be able to get back into the US?
I'd really like to go but obv. don't want to encounter any problems...and I don't know if the border has a phone number or something...so I'm really clueless as to how I find this info. out. Any help or ideas would be appreciated.

because of the huge backlog in passport processing, the passport for land travel requirement between the US and Canada has been postponed until next summer (so far).

I was at the passport office in LA in March and was talking to a few people that had already waited 3 months for new passports in the mail. They were fed up and headed to the office like me.

I paid an extra $100 and got mine in less than 3 weeks, totally worth it.

Just a couple of months ago, I paid the regular amount and had my passport in less than a month. According to the guy at the office I went to, they are processing passports by the day you need them. This doesn't necessarily mean you will get it when you need it, but if you put a sooner date you will be put higher on the list. If you pay to expedite your passport, the odds are you will have it in time.

So go apply for your passport TODAY, make sure there are no errors and pay for expediting. You could have it in time. Now Go!!
