Default Best antidepressants that don't cause weight gain!

    Hey everyone,

I've been on Wellbutrin 300mg/day for about 3 years now and it's stopped working. I feel like shit, I've gained a ton of weight from my depression, and I can hardly function anymore. I have always suffered from bouts of depression all of my life. I need an anti-depressant that WILL NOT cause weight gain, rather I would like one that would cause weight loss if possible. If anyone has any suggestions please let me know! I've got an appointment with my doctor tomorrow.

Wellbutrin appears to still be the best of the bunch in terms of not experiencing weight gain. 300mg is the standard adult dose, but higher doses are used with a recommended max of 450mg. Doc might also try adding in a small dose of some other drug, etc, so see what he/she comes up with. Don't panic just yet...

I've heard switching from SR to XR and vice versa can help.

Is the weight gain from anti-depressants caused by the fact they increase your appetite or do they actually slow down your metabolism? It seems to me a lot of people are able to be on SSRIs and still stay slim.

The only med I ever gained weight on was Zyprexa, which is for mania... everything else was fine. I never gained weight on a tricyclic, SSRI or unicyclic.

Me too! Maybe you need a higher dosage of your Wellbutrin?

Or have you tried counseling? It sucks, but sometimes meds alone will NOT get rid of your depression.

Wellburtin is the best in terms of not gaining weight or really fucking with your libido. You might need a higher dose of the medication since you've been on it for awhile. Talk to you doc.

Clomipramine causes weight loss but I don't suggest it unless you have good support and a really strong will, it can cause anorexia.

When my depression gets really bad I take my Wellbutrin in higher doses and add another antidepressant on top of it. It's easier than getting totally off my Wellbutrin and then starting something new.

Right now I'm taking 600-750mg of Wellbutrin SR and 120mg of Prozac, but sometimes I take Wellbutrin XL instead of SR. I seem to do better on SR than XL. No antidepressants have ever made me gain weight though...

You should ask your Doc about Cymbalta

Thanks a lot guys (especially about the Cymbalta). Initially Wellbutrin caused weight loss for me, however I think I have grown a tolerance for it since I've been on it for so long. I'll ask my doctor about upping my dose or adding a small dose of Cymbalta. Thanks again!

I've been on trazadone for over two and a half years. I actually dropped weight. It's mostly for my insomnia but it has leveled my somewhat bi-polar emotional reactions.

Wellbutrin did nothing for me I still cried all the time. The side effect of seizures scared the heck out of me too. I'm now on Lexapro and am a happy camper.

I gained weight on Lexapro, but I think it was a combination of causes, not all due to with the medication.

I have been on all of the SSRI, SNRIs, and Wellbutrin. I gained weight on none of them, except for the Lexapro. Incidentally, all of them did jack shit for my depression after about a 3 month honeymoon period.

I take a low-dose of Lamictal now, which is prescriped off-label for treatment-resistant depression. Again, no weight gain. Weight loss, in fact, but probably because I'm more active and I have no desire to drink as much alchohol as I used to. I feel better than I ever have before, but I think it's also due to cognitive behavorial therapy. If you'd like to learn more about that, have a look at this website:

    And about Lamictal for depression:

I've also been taking various supplements, including Omega 3, B12 and B6, and Calcium/Magnesium.

I actually lost weight with lexapro, like a lot but that is probably because I only eat when I'm depressed, and I wasn't anymore once I started the lexapro. Also lexapro made me nauseous, so I didn't have much of an appetite.

Are you taking brand name Wellbutrin or generic? You're in Canada, so I don't know what its like there. But here in the US, Wellbutrin went generic last year and there have been a lot of reports (and tests confirming) that generic Wellbutrin (called Budeprion, made by Teva) is not even close to the brand name.

Seroquel was given to me for my insomnia....this stuff will make you gain weight like you wouldn't believe. I gained 20lbs in one month. NO JOKE. My friend also experienced weight gain on it.

Lexapro gave me energy but ruined my sex drive. My fiancee would try for hours to get me off. I hate that stuff.

Depakote was ok, it just has some serious side effects if you would happen to get pregnant. I did get pregnant while I was on it. My doctor did not even know about the side effect until I made her look it up in a PDR....this is a mood stabilizer.

Lamictal....was on it. Lost my medical coverage, so I could not afford my prescriptions.

Ativan is wonderful for anxiety but it will make you sleepy.

Wellbutrin and Zoloft were not strong enough for me. I did not have any weight gain on either of these.

I gain weight by just looking at food. LOL.

I am bi polar, as if you cannot tell by the list.

why would you even be given seroquel and lexapro if you're bipolar? seroquel is an antipsychotic--i'm surprised it would be used for insomnia. lexapro is an antidepressant--antidepressants should not be given to people with bipolar disorder because they can cause mania.

I was prescribed Depakote, Seroquel, Ativan, and Lexapro all at the same time. The lexapro to be taken in the morning and the ativan morning and night. The Seroquel at night. The lexapro was given because at the time, I was in a serious depressive state. I am so sensitive to medications, that I was walking around like a zombie.

I do not take anything now and just suffer through the different states. It is mania now as many of you can tell, my posts are long and chatty. I have had 6 hours sleep in two days. When I do not post it is because I am depressive, I try hard to hide from people on those days. I take care of my business, which is small, and go to bed. My fiancee takes care of my son when it is really bad.

They'll give Seroquel to people for sleep, but normally at low doses and not for very long. I was in a hospital with a girl that was hella manic and they gave her 50mgs every night to slow her down because she was staying up for days at a time. To use it for regular antipsychotic issues you normally get a higher dose and take it 2-3 times a day. That shit is my saving grace, can ya tell?

And I second the NO GENERIC WELLBUTRIN comment. It makes a big fucking difference, enough that my doc won't check the 'generic substitution allowed' box when he writes that script. The only things I'm allowed to have generics of are Adderall, Prozac and Neurontin. Everything else either doesn't have a generic or my doc won't give them to me because he doesn't agree that the generics will give me the same benefits as the brand name drugs.

I have no insurance either, and I order my Lamictal from Canada. If I didn't, I'd be paying $500 a month.

I'm on Cipralex (Lexapro). I love it. None of the side effects stayed with me once I got used to the drug. Even my sex drive leveled out (I can come again too... yay).

It depends on the person. If you went from brand name to generic and haven't noticed any recurrence of symptoms, then I'd say don't worry about it.

The FDA says they're the same, but they don't really do much testing and looking at the number of people saying they've had problems when they went to generic, I'd say there is. Apparently, the FDA only requires that the generic meet a 20% bioequivalence standard. I don't know exactly what that means, but I assume it's basically how much is in your system.

I was able to get about a years worth of Wellbutrin XL samples shortly after it went generic, so I don't have any personal experience with it, but I'm hoping that my insurance will allow me to get the brand name when the samples run out.

    Brand vs. Generic

Here's a snippet from that page:
Joe and Terry Graedon over at The People's Pharmacy have been collecting reports of problems with generic drugs of all sorts for some time. After hundreds reports of problems with Teva's Budeprion XL (generic for Wellbutrin XL) they had it tested and, surprise!, the Teva generic wasn't close to bioequivalent. We've had a similar volume, but we've lost a couple versions of our forum. As I've pointed out before, this exact problem was brought up before the FDA and the FDA's response was: "You people are crazy, all American generics are fine and dandy."
Here's a page on that People's Pharmacy site with hundreds of comments saying it's not the same.

    http://www.peoplespharmacy.com/archi..._questions.php

Everybody is different and reacts differently to medications. Just because it's a generic doesn't mean it's "bad." I've read some reports where people couldn't handle the brand name of some drug, but didn't have any problems with the generic and it worked great.
