    Default Good vegan food??

So I've recently decided to give veganism a chance. I've been experimenting with lots of different brands of vegan foods, and there are limited varieties. The Silk soymilks are good, a lot of Amy's brand vegan food is good, but its been hard to find decent sour cream and vegan cheeses. If anyone would like to share their favorite vegan foods, recipes that would be great!!! Again just vegan as in no dairy, eggs, or foods wtih animal sources in them. I hope there are some other vegans out there.

Tofutti makes really good sour cream, cream cheese and ice cream. I also like soy dream for ice cream.

For meats, I love Gimme Lean brand (it comes in a little tube), Gardenburger riblets, and Boca burgers (grillers taste like real beef.) I kinda gave up on non-dairy cheese. In a sandwich I'll use vegan mayo or some other mock dairy product and that usually makes it yummy.

I can't help that I like the taste of meat, so these rock. I can also get into tofu if it's cooked right, but I pretty much don't like it.

Do you have a Terader Joe's or Whole Foods nearby?

Also, Vegan with a Vengence is a really good cookbook.

^^^those tofutti ice cream sandwich things are the bomb! I could eat a whole box!

a couple of years ago at whole foods in the precooked food section they had like this really good tofu dish that was a mock of chicken marsala or something but it was awesome you can go to the preheated section and try out different things to see what you like.

I'm not vegan, but I do eat that way sometimes. An excellent, easy meal is Mexican food. You can get fake taco meat, cook up some spicy beans and rice, put it with chips, tortillas, lettuce, etc... if you make it spicy enough, you won't even miss the cheese!

Wheat Gluten is great if you have the time to cook with it - you can use it to replace meat in recipes like soups, casseroles, fried chicken, anything! And Chinese food! A lot of that is vegan and absolutely delicious.

    I've been wondering the same....
Stores like Whole Foods and Wild Oats have the best varitety of brands.....and after trying vegan cheeses I know now that all brands are NOT created equal

I just picked up a copy of "Skinny Bitch" (which is totally a vegan diet in disguise) and they recommend specific brands for everything vegan. I recommend getting the book, or even the new cookbook sequel that just came out.

you can make a really good vegan, raw nacho cheese out of raw cashews.
I have it home made and at a vegan restaurant.....couldn't tell the difference!

Nutritional yeast is also used as a cheese substitute.

"Nutritional yeast has a strong flavor that is described by vegans as nutty, cheesy, or creamy, which makes it popular as an ingredient in cheese substitutes. It is often used by vegans in place of parmesan cheese. Another popular use is as a topping for popcorn. " - wiki

My boyfriend and I make those a lot because he's not veg (so he'll fry up something for himself in another pan.) But I recommend fake sour cream for these. Or guacamole almost seems cheesy.

The fake cheese....ugh. Just can't do it.

I really like those Morningstar farms fake chicken patties. They're really good on a whole wheat bun with lettuce, tomato, and mustard. I also put sharp cheddar cause I'm just vegetarian, not vegan, but I think they'd still be great without it.

I don't think they try to hide it. I read some of the book the other day at the bookstore and it doesn't try to hide their opinions on veganism and animal cruelty. Reading was good for me though. I need remind myself of the bigger picture of veganism every so often. Yeah, it's hard, but it's not supposed to be easy.

And it does have some intersting recipes, but they mostly looked too complex for me. I like ready-made stuff.

Dottie Rebel has posted a bunch of ideas and links to food she likes, and she hasn't led me wrong yet!

i used to dream militant dreams / of taking over america / to show these white folks how it should be done
i used to dream radical dreams / of blowing everyone away / with my perceptive powers of correct analysis
i even used to think / id be the one to stop the riot and negotiate the peace / then i awoke and dug
that if i dreamed natural dreams / of being a natural woman
doing what a woman does / when shes natural
    i would have a revolution

^Oops, you're right, they contain both milk and egg ingredients. I just looked it up. So I guess skip them if you're vegan!

Dr Praegner's brand (sp) was recently written up in Allure. They have broccoli patties & other frozen products. I didn't like their veggie burgers tho.
