Default Biotin + Walmart Hair pills +? = getting my hair back?

My hair was so damaged that I had to cut it off. I asked for a shaggy layered razor bob, but the stylist was dumb and my hair is too thick to really hold a razor style. I also don't look good with short hair. I will be wearing my hair up for the next few months because I fucking hate this haircut.

I need to get my hair back. 4 times a day, I take the Hair, Skin, & Nails pills that are available from Walmart. I'm looking at additional biotin supplements as well. Will this suffice? I try to wash my hair every other day, using a no-cone conditioner every day.

Should I take the pills separately, like the hair pills in the morning and the biotin pills at night, or what? Any interactions I should know about? Thanks.

I think that hair skin and nails formula sucks ass.

What's so sucky about the pills? They have pretty much everything that the woman taken individually. I hope that the biotin and silica in the pills will do it. If not, I'll keep adding.

    The HS&N pills 4x a day--probably too much. :/

I would stick to 1 and take a seperate biotin supplement.

You should break up your doses of biotin, as if you take them all at once, you'll just pee out the excess. From what I've read, biotin is most effective once you get into the 5000 mcg realm.

Putting your hair up is great and minimizes damage. If you are shampooing every other day (that's quite often), make sure you are using a gentle shampoo, perferably without sulphates or harsh sulphates.

In order to retain as much of your growth as possible, I'd steer clear of chemical treatments and heat styling. Since you said your hair was so damaged it needed lopping, you'll need to find a gentler routine.

If you can still put it up, that is considered long to most people. And hair does grow back, so take heart.

^Do you know of any sulfate-free shampoos? I'm going to Whole Foods tomorrow to look at the natural stuff. I managed to find a list of cone-free conditioners.

The reason that my hair was trashed was a combination of many things. 1) I'm in nursing school, so I haven't had time for trims or other care. 2) Color treatment with lack maintenance. 3) I got a shitty haircut from a stupid bitch who didn't know how to use thinning shears. She put in "layers" that made me have to lop it off in the first place. 4) Using -cone conditioner for years. That stuff trashes your hair but you don't realize it until you stop.

How should I break up the biotin? I just ordered some of the 5000 mcg pills. Should I break them in half and take one in the morning, one in the evening?

My current haircut is shitty. I decided to have fun with short hair and tried an emo haircut. The women didn't know what she was doing, and made it clear that she had other customers and that I should be okay with her work. It's very layered, and almost mullets at the back. That's the last time I go to a TGF hair, as well as the last time I go to a stylist whose first language is not English.

Cause they just never did a thing. I took thoes before my hair tragedy, and yet, my hair stayed about the same length for years. I think the dose of biotin is to low maybe. I dunno. They just didn't help me. My hair doesn't grow very fast at all. The large dose of biotin helped immensly.

Any suggestions for shampoo and conditioner? I'm looking at the Nexxus Humectress line. My hair is thick but fine (I'm half Asian), silky, and I dye it black. I'm going to Sally Beauty Supply to find a generic version if possible.

Kaylinn hair normally grows 1/2 inch every month without the pills hun.

Biotin, Hiar Skin Nails and all others will not make hair grow faster. All that happens with some (not all people) is the root of the hair grows in healthier and thicker for those who it actually works for.

Extra Biotin is good for many other reasons. But take the RDA dose on the bottle.

I take half a prenatal and half a multi. everyday. My hair still grows at the rate it always has, no difference.

We just have to wait out a bad cut for it to frow normally.

I was going to say that. Thats the average hair growth. Some people are a little more or less but thats the middle.

I like Aquage shampoo and conditioner which are sulfate free. Back to Basics is somewhat cheap and sulfate free.

    List of sulphate-free shampoos:

I usually see Giovanni in the drugstores, and most health foods stores carry Burt Bees.

Bear in mind, if you're getting off 'cones you MUST use sulphates to clarify initially. Then you can go off them for good. The reason for this is that sulphates are the only way to completely strip off the silicone coating your locks. Otherwise, it's like trying to moisturize something with a layer of varnish on it.

You may also want to experiment with moisturizing with various oils like coconut, jojoba, etc.

You could pick up one of those pill-splitters and take 2500mcg twice daily. I've heard of some people having good results with 10 000 mcg (one woman reported 1" growth monthly) in which case you could just take two of the whole pills daily, but some are unwilling to take that much biotin. It is water soluable, however.

The average growth rate is 1/2 inch, but some people do get more or less growth. Nutrition is a factor in maximizing one's growth potential, which is where the vitamins come in.

I've known of many people who've increased their growth with vitamins, so it's inaccurate to say that hair always growth at a set rate that cannot be altered.
I mean, just check out the Walmart hair pills thread. Clearly, vitamins can increase growth for many people...

You might want to go to a good, reputable stylist and get a better cut while you wait. This haircut is not going to grow out any time soon, and that's a long time to be miserable while you wait. A good stylist will know how to make you look cute. I think at this point I might just say screw it with the length for now and just get a good, shorter haircut.

Yes. My sister in laws hair naturally grows over an inch a month. it drives her nuts because she likes cute, shorter styles and needs cuts all the time. Guess you always want what you dont have!

And I just want to say - what a freakin idiot. My sis in law wanted the "victoria beckham" haircut. Shes Mexican/White and has thick, thick, thick hair and I had to convince her this is NOT going to work. So we met with a happy median. But yea, what a stupid hairdresser. When you have thick hair it you cannot get razor cuts just like when you have really fine and bring in a photo of thick, long, hair its like, um hunny, Im a beautician not a magician.

Check out ... Read Ingredient Technology under "Our Story". All thier products are sulfate and salt free. It's a fantastic botanical based line that is technology driven so you get the best of both worlds. Please reconsider the Whole Foods stuff. I have yet to find any haircare products there that haven't disappointed me. If you're still color treating your hair, the natural food store stuff is really bad.

As far as silicones are concerned, I belong to the camp that beleives they're not bad (in fact they're actually beneficial) as long as they're paired up with quality hemuctants... If you're using Tressume, the silicones in there are just sealing in the alcohol, sulfates, and added water; no bueno. But with better, professional hair care line, the silicones are sealing in moisturizers and/or plant based oils.

If you must have a silicone free line, check out . It's an excellent botanical based line widely used by salon professionals.

I had a similar thing-I had very damaged hair, and I went in for a cut, and came out with this mullet...i had some piece sthat are 3 or 4 inches long, and the rest is about an inch above my shoulders. It was awful.

I wouldn't be so concerned with supplements, unless you have a real deficiency. For instance, I'm severely anemic, so the lack of iron affected my overall health, causing others parts of my appearance to fall apart, frail, slow growing hair, excessively dry skin, easily cracked nails, etc. Focus on getting a full, healthy range of nutrients. Take a multi and eat a wide variety of foods. Get plenty fo rest and regular exercise. Your health affects the growth and appearance of your hair.

I'm a huge fan of no-cones, since I switched, my hair is so much more resilient, I can go far longer without split ends, it's great. I really Like Burts Bees.

I also sometimes no conditioner only washes, which has helped as well.

Also, since you said your hair was damaged, try and experiement with different ways of doing your hair. I went from using perma-dye every 6 weeks, to semi-permanent once a month-far less damaging. Instead of straightening every day, I use big velcro rolelrs and air dry, and use an iron maybe twice a week.

Fromt he above changes, my hair went from growing a quarter inch a month, to a full inch...mostly because my hair was so much healthier (split ends usually make your hai rlook shorter)

Okay, I just went to Sally's and bought the generic version (exact same ingredients) of Nexxus Humectress. I'm also looking at using that 18-in-one castile soap for my hair. Has anyone ever tried either?

Not my hair. My hair grows extremly slow. before I got it cut off, it was the same length for years. It just wouldn't grow. I had a noticble growth once I started taking the vitamins regularly. Oh well. They worked for me and helped speed upo my hair growth, maybe they'll do the same for others, maybe not,.

You mean Doctor Bronners? I've used it in a pinch, but it's very drying. Good for shaving though!

Well, yes and no. It may not have seemed to be growing because you had split ends and as it grew it broke off so it wasnt getting any longer but it was growing. Like with me, my hair seems to grown sooo slow. But I bleach it and have definate roots... I just dont take great care of it so the bottoms breaking off at the same rate the tops growing. I really should take better care of my hair - especially since thats what Ill be doing for a living..

Please follow Circe's advice and read The Long Hair Community forums. You will learn so many things you did not know about hair care. I have been following their advice for only a month now and I now have very healthy beautiful hair, when before it was pretty damaged.

^^^ no. If they're anything like the Ulta's here, very little, if any, education is given to new, fresh out of school stylists. You may get lucky with a stylist, you may not.

Check out for customer reviews on salons, it's an excellent resource. Marbella has some great reviews and so does Touch of Red As with any customer review site, you'll get negative reviews/expieriences, I think it's important to read the salon's response to them since that'll give you an idea about the kind of customer service to expect.

Anyhow, read some reviews on a bunch of different salons and see what you think.
