    Thumbs down Spider!

    Worst. Morning. Ever.

I found a Brown Recluse in the storage closet outside of my patio this morning! It was HUGE! It was super fat and had to have been an inch long! I think I lost my mind. Seriously. I started screaming, lol. I called maintenance and took a hot shower to wash the spider-cooties off of me! It was poisionous and huge and I had walked right into it's web!!!!! I saw it right above me! It couldn't have bitten me or anything but I keep itching and twitching!

I still need something out of my closet but I'm afraid to go in there! Wtf am I going to do!?

No seriously... I think I lost my mind... pushed me right over the brink and into insanity.

Nnnnnnnnnngah! Bad poison spider! I'd feel horrible and twitchy for hours too, babe.

Do you have any spider spray? Or an electric bug zapper? A fly swatter would work fine--I'm trying to think of long-distance options so you don't have to get close up. Don't freak out...just take it out and get what you need. Nice thing about spiders is they aren't "pack" critters...like if you see one ant, there are a million around the corner? Not spiders. So just breathe, kill the fucker, and relax.

But what if it had a bf in there?! Or babies?! Where would they keep their babies? The maintence dude ran the broom all over the ceiling and in the corners with a light, so I'm sure there's nothing UP there, but... EEEPP! I'm not a fan of spiders, but they don't usually make me so crazy! I didn't even bother with trying my own spray on that thing... It was so big, it wouldn't have worked! It would have taken A LOT of spray!

    *itches*

It's not even something that I can grab off the top, I have to search for it! I'm lending someone the box my Wii came in because she got her kids a used one for x-mas and doesn't have a box... I couldn't say, "Sorry, but your kids are just going to have to make do this x-mas... I'm having psychological issues from seeing a big spider out there"? Lol, maybe I'll have a drink first!

Drunk Bella stumbled out and proceeds to slur loudly "WHERE'S ALL THEM FUCKIN SPIDERS" and then belches.

    The end.

Bella, just to ease your mind, I want to let you know that extensive surveys by arachnologists in California have led them to conclude the following:

THERE ARE NO BROWN RECLUSE SPIDERS IN CALIFORNIA!!!!!!!!

If you google, you can confirm this (sorry I don't have time to find the link right now.)

    So....Don't be freaked out!!!

The only dangerous spiders in CA are black widows (and though I've found them when I was looking for them in dark scary places, I've never seen one in my house).

Hope that makes you feel a little better.

^^I don't know about that....my roommate in LA actually got bit by a brown recluse. She had to go to the hospital, it was very very serious, her temp was very high and she felt very ill. She could have easily died.

Yeah, that's BS my Uncle was bitten by a brown recluse here in Oakland. It was really gross, the bites swelled and had to be drained out. I doubt he or whoever the person above me mentioned got bit by the only 2 brown recluse in Cali. LoL.

    ^lol!

Well, the spider is now nothing more than a grease spot on the pavement... but if those scientists wanted to come and do some tests...

I still haven't gone out there to get the Wii box yet! >.<

I think that article is hogwash. I don't care if they're spider "experts" or not. Pests, rodents, bugs, spiders and the like can be moved in shipments and relocate and whatnot.

We had alot of them in the basement of my parent's old house in Idaho.

Yes, the brown recluse may be indigineous (sp?) to the midwest, but they can and do live elsewhere!!

I have a friend who lives nearby and he says there are a lot of them in this area. BUT, even if that's not exactly what it was, it was BIG AND SCARY and looked just like that picture with the big ass and everything! Fuck, I shouldn't have read this thread just now... *puts off going out there for a little bit more* I'm getting all itchy again. It was so close to me, being all gross, looking at me with it's creepy eight eyes! EIGHT EYES! Fangs! Ugliness! It wouldn't have me so freaked out if I hadn't wandered straight into the web! You know what kills me? I was out there almost a month ago and walked into the same damn web! It freaked me out but I didn't figure that spider would be THAT bad! It was nighttime so I couldn't see it, how close was it to me?!!?! Ah, how long has it been there, getting fat?!

    Misdiagnoses

It is estimated that 80% of reported brown recluse bites may be misdiagnosed. The misdiagnosis of a wound as a brown recluse bite could delay proper treatment of serious diseases. There is now a -based test for brown recluse venom that can determine if a wound is a brown recluse bite, although it is not commercially available and not in routine use.
There are numerous documented infectious and noninfectious conditions (including , bacterial infections by and , , diabetic ulcer, fungal infections, chemical burns, dermatitis, , localized , , , , and ) that produce wounds that have been initially misdiagnosed as recluse bites by medical professionals; many of these conditions are far more common and more likely to be the source of mysterious necrotic wounds, even in areas where recluses actually occur.
Reported cases of bites occur primarily in , , , , , and . There have been many reports of brown recluse bites in (and elsewhere outside the range of the brown recluse); however the brown recluse is not found in California (though a few related species may be found there, none of which has been shown to bite humans). To date, the reports of bites from areas outside of the spider's native range have been either unverified, or - if verified - specimens moved by travelers or commerce. Gertsch and Ennik (1983) report that occasional spiders have been intercepted in various locations where they have no known established populations; , , , , , , , , , , and (Mexico), which indicates that these spiders may indeed be transported fairly easily, though the lack of established populations well outside the natural range also indicates that such movement does not lead to colonization of new areas. Many arachnologists believe that many bites attributed to the brown recluse in the are not spider bites at all, or possibly instead the bites of other spider species; for example, the bite of the has been reported to produce similar symptoms, and is found in the northwestern and southern in Canada. However, the toxicity of the hobo spider has been called into question as bites have not been proven to cause necrosis, and the spider is not considered a problem in its native . In addition, published work has shown that -induced rashes are often misidentified as brown recluse spider bites.

So yeah. They can get moved around. Word...but how unlikely is this scenario we're painting of brown recluses all over CA? There are so many spiders that look like the brown recluse. Dude, they're nondescript brown spiders.

They crunch really loud when you kill them!!

(My bedroom was part of the finished basement and they were always turning up in my jetted bath tub.)

The maintenance guy said it was a brown recluse... but his English is lacking... maybe he meant black widow? Because the recluse's in those pictures look small. I don't remember much, since I started screaming and ran, but it had a big ass and it was HUGE! I didn't notice any markings, though.

Without the red, this IS pretty much the image in my head right now. A huge ass and long creey legs. I just took the guy's opinion, since I figure he kills lots of spiders in the complex.
