    Default I'm getting a bird!!

My grandma is trying to find a home for a cockatiel so I am gonna take him in!
I haven't had a bird since I was like 10, so anyone who has any words of advice or anything I should know before bringing him home would be great!
Also...can you teach cockatiels to talk? That would be cool lol

If it is a male he may talk a bit...they arent big talkers though. Females usually dont talk at all. They can learn to mimic whistles though. Any idea how old he is? The younger the better if you want to teach him to talk.

If you arent getting all accessories with the bird..get the biggest cage you can afford and have room for(with appropriate cage bar spacing so he cant get his little head stuck between the bars...ask at the store and they will help you find one thats right)

Toys. Anythign they can shred is good....try to stay away from rope though. Either toys or rope perches. Once they start chewing, the rope can fray and wrap around...one of mine had to have a toe amputated because of that.

Get a good quality seed mix or preferably pellets if he'll eat them. LOTS of human food.Birds are the opposite of many other pets...the more human food the better. No chocolate(or sweets in general), meat, seafood, avocado,or the pits/seeds of most fruits.

But lots of veggies ...pasta, chunks of fruit...very good for them.

Well I'm not too sure how old he is. The owner was an older person and passed away, so that's why the bird needs a home. He's probably an older bird.

I just talked to my grandma and she says he dances! lol! She says her cat LOVES him and will lay by the cage and listen to him chirp and watch him dance!

What do ya'll think about my cats and the bird though?

    They like to whistle.
Avocado is very poisonous to them so dont ever let the have it.
they like plain cooked noodles a lot.

Depends on your cat. Obviously the bird wont be freaked if he is used to cats. Keep an eye on them...dont let the bird out when the cat is around and if at ALL possible...dont put the cage somewhere that the cat can get to it when you arent watching. If the cat is very predatory...he may try to get to the bird through the cage bars, which could give a bird...esp an older bird a little heart attack.

Every pet is differant though. Personally...my cats are terrified of my birds so go figure!

Oooo birds can be great pets. I've never had a cockatiel though. My best friend from childhood had one and he or she (don't remember) didn't like me too much. Maybe because he/she was able to tell I was scared or something? Anyway, she'd always give him/her a bowl of small veggies to eat and let him/her hop around her room while I was over. He/she was definitely a talker! We always knew when he/she was awake which was kinda annoying when we wanted to sleep in after sleepovers.
