It's a fine line that DJ's walk when they're trying to please the entertainers and keep up the general mood of the club.

I gave my DJ's control after having to fill in myself one night. What a freaking nightmare! Having a girl request a song (Turn the Page by Metallica) knowing it would bring down the mood is a sticky situation. Especially since she was a top money maker. The crowd was leaning more towards a "Magic Carpet Ride" or "American Band" type of classic rock scene.

Solution? I explained the situation and offered to substitute another Metallica song for her. She chose "Enter Sandman" and everyone was happy.

    Well done!

I was already impressed, now I am even more so. That required perception, good judgement, and persuasive ability--three qualities all too many DJs lack, and all too many dancers fail to appreciate. Fortunately there are those among us with a touch of enlightenment, lol...

    Thank you!

Yeah, my DJ's got to make those kinds of calls after that fiasco. I was dating one of my DJ's and still didn't understand until I actually did it.

Keeping the schedule, making the announcements, introducing the girls, dealing with requests from girls and custies etc. Whew! And to those who say that DJ's only press a computer button are dead wrong. They had to take time at home to make the playlist to begin with.

My DJ's were working with two CD decks so it required constant attention. I'm glad for all the gadgets they have now to make your lives easier.

If you take the time to read Djoser's posts, you'd see all the thought behind the job and the fact that he treats it the same way anyone in a Marketing position would.

I'm still not sure if I agree with the whole 10% rule though. That seems a bit much if a girl got repeat dances or made an upsell herself with no further interaction from the DJ. I would just treat it like, if I did well, share the wealth a little. It will come back to you favorably.

This song is great for 2-4-1's!

I've always thought that the sign of a good entertainer is that she can dance to anything. I always tell newbies if you can dance to whatever is being played you'll always make $$. While I have music that I like to dance to I've always relied on my DJ's to read the crowd. Sure I dance better to music that I personally like but I know my Southern Rock isn't going to go over well with the Friday night young guys, the same way the Saturday afternoon bikers that come in don't want to hear rap.
I've given my CD's to the DJ somedays and they never get played, does this mean I don't tip out, no. They're still doing a job for me. I too have DJ'ed at my club, it's not as easy as it looks. Hat's off to all the DJ's on here.

There is this older stripper who comes to our club every now and then, but she kinda has manly features with a deeeeep voice. Our DJ usually plays "Dude Looks Like a Lady" by Aerosmith and she loves it! No kidding, I've asked her non shalontly B4!

    totally ot..

the last time i worked we had a doorman djing and he just wasn't really cut out for it....said strange, rude things about the dancers as they were preparing to go onstage (about a really HOT girl asking for the little red lights: "here's honey, she's so sexy she needs special lighting!") and constantly screwed up songs, played weird inbetween songs...it just really set a bizarre mood. so i was bitching about him pretty hard, because wtf man, have a little finesse. but then i had a nightmare i was a dj, it was a completely unfamiliar club and i had to learn this convoluted music system on the computer, and i was so terrified to say anything that i just barely played music and didn't say a word on the mic, and everybody was like you're blowing it, just say one thing, introduce the girls, and i just couldn't. i choked. woke up anxious and stressed. made me just a tiny bit more sympathetic.

sometimes i like to dance to inappropriate music. usually when the place is packed with poker people who watch but don't tip.

Hahhaa, the only time I have the dj play that is at like 6 am when next to nobody is in the club and I'm drunk. I get a kick out of it. lol

What I really hate tho is when older girls dance to 80's music...like geese man way to date yourself even more!! Once when I worked at the Shack, this woman who was about 40 came in and danced.....to Frank Sinatra...while lipsyncing. I saw her upstairs bitching she didn't make any money....like, "Quelle Suprise biotch!!"

    Oh god no, lol!

Way too graceless, and not in all that great of shape (not that cheerleaders automatically stay in the same shape 5 years after high school, of course).

Just when I thought she was getting better, she went into a total fit of hopping all over the stage the other night. I did figure out that the slick smooth type of techno seems to limit it, though, and she seems to like it as well.

I have always said to the DJ "critics that until they have done the job themselves, they have no idea how much of a pain in the ass it can be
As far as the 10%, most clubs (at least in my exp) will cap it at like 35 or 40 so that the Dancer dosent have to pay 100 if she makes a 1000. Dancers are still dancing to music even if they are in Vip all night so it is a good fair and balanced way. It also protects the dj's as far as the song selections go, this way if the dj dosent want to play a inappropriate song (such as slow, too ghetto..etc) that would bring the club down or is against policy set by the club then the girl cant turn aroung and punish the dj by giving a set min fee. It is a good all around system, especially for those poor bastards working in clubs that only have 8 - 10 dancers on a shift!!
God I remember those old days.....now im scared. lol
Btw...Im headed to Florida in May/June for good...hope to meet some SW peeps!!!

I've seen girls rock it out to Sinatra, which is way before the time of any 40 year old anyway. There's nothing wrong with dating yourself a bit-most of the custies are 30 plus and want to see a chick dance to 80s music. I used to get mad tips for dancing to 'View to a Kill'.

Yeah, I can see that working very well with the older clientele.

The big mistake some of the dancers who request certain music will make is not considering the crowd. The ones spending money, that is.

Of course, so much depends on the dancer, as well. Some women can pull off almost anything they want to, others need to be more careful, and then there's a few who are skating on thin ice to begin with, and need to please the crowd with the music at all costs.

Mine did! They always take a good 15 minutes to explain things, show them some moves, and let them practice a bit.

It helps though, that my club is pretty much managed by a woman and a stripper at that.

    The owners make the rules.

You can get fired in some clubs for jumping off the stage, I can get fired in some clubs for pissing off even a few of the girls, out of 60 or more. Trust me, I'm not there to play music the women don't like--that's like slitting your own throat.

But if a girl is spazzing out onstage, I'm going to do what I can to limit it. Hopefully I can play music she likes in the process.

Well last i checked I follow club policy too and my primary concern is the club policy first (Who also pays us), then the overall crew of dancers, that way i get to keep my job. Usually IMO a dancer who is "caddy", would walk of stage (which is the most unprofessional thing to do in ANY situation) and would demand that i change a song mid song because she pays me and is the boss of me (prob a min fee payor anyways). After my laughter died down would be tossed out the door to make room for the professional dancers that wanted to work. No offense to the poster, im speaking in general here. Most clubs flip out on anyone who walks off stage...and "I didnt like the song" never works...LOL...(got a little testy there for a sec...)

Anyways, it is tough even after all this time to keep club, custies and performers all happy at the same time...In high volume clubs I like to use the old faithful index card system. It never fails if its a club where song selection is dancer controlled, if its up to dj's, i just read the crowd and ask the ladies what genre they desire it is soooo much better that way.
