    Default I absolutely HATE LA!!!!!!

I only came here because my boyfriend's family lives here and he hasn't seen them in almost a year, so we're here visiting staying with his mom, stepdad, brother and sister in Culver City. IT SUCKS HERE!!!! I HATE IT SO MUCH!!! I WANT TO LEAVE NOW!!!

Today we went to Venice beach, which is pretty cool- for 20 minutes. It's TOO MUCH!! It's like sensory overload EVERYWHERE- there's negative energy everywhere. Everything here is electric-- there's too many radio waves and wireless internet and automobile exhaust and jet planes droning overhead and sirens and ITS DRIVING ME CRAZY!!! There are more planes and helicopters int eh sky than stars!!! I'm sitting on the god damned roof of his parent's apartment building overlooking venice boulevard, downtown, santa monica and the hollywood hills- and this is the only enjoyable part of being here- being up on the freaking roof alone. There are too many people- and they're all SO DESPERATE-- for money, for fame, for attention, for sex... it's ridiculous. You can feel people's hunger. It's killing me. I need to leave....

IS there ANYWHERE to go in LA that isn't spiritually dead and full of drugs?? there are speed addicts everywhere. UGHGHGHG

Oh yeah, and we don't have a car, so we're stuck taking the bus which costs 1.75 and the transfer only lasts 2hours, or walking everywhere. Today I got off the bus too early on the way back from venice beach and walked 3 miles down washington boulevard in a tank top and skirt and it's 55 degrees!! which is COLD!!

    :rant oveR:

    I could never live here.

Haha on the walking in LA thing. Missing Persons did a song a long time ago about it, called, you guessed it--'Walking in LA'

    "nobody walks in LA..."

Sorry you aren't having fun. I used to love NYC until I started to visit with my SO, we stayed at her parents' houses there which were in the best neighborhoods in Manhattan, and I fucking hated every minute of it! They knew all the cool people, and they were all full of shit.

If you hate LA, you would probably love Key West, BTW...

This won't be too helpful since I haven't been there but I had a similar reaction to Vegas. You can feel the desperation and money/status lust. But I grew to like it and blocked out the rest. I just focused on work and my new friends. Perhaps if you were in a different neighborhood you'd feel more mellow?

Alright, as a native to Los Angeles I have to say, there are some amazing things about this city. Rich in culture, hot nightlife, and there is ALWAYS something to do here. Yes, the air is thick with smog and ghetto birds, but the people you'll come across here are novel worthy.

Welcome to LA. For someone who hasnt been here a long time, forget about finding anything other than what you expirenced. There are places in venice that are cool, but this city is all about bullshit, so its kind of a find your niche or forget it type place. Ive got a decent sized group of friends, and we all just do what we can to get by, have fun, and get our music/art/whatever our chosen avenue is out there. I love this city, but you have to really know it to love it.

I had the same reaction to Vegas, and I haven't even been there yet, lol!

I know I could bank there, and probably have a lot of fun, but I also know it's not my kind of town. Sounds like a gigantic, hyped-up, glorified version of Daytona. Except in Daytona, though you can really "feel the desperation and money/status lust", they are lusting after a lot less money, which only makes it slightly more pathetic.

I've been visiting the Self-Realization Fellowship Lake Shrine in Pacific Palisades for relief since the late 70's. The picture doesn't do the actual location justice. The lake supports an abundance of plant life, plus an amazing array of ornamental Koi Carp and several ducks & swans. The gardens are designed to promote reflective meditation and stillness.

Ironically, given your comment about drugs, I was initially drawn to its peace and beauty during high school as a teen acidhead. I began courting my wife there in 1990, and frequently fed the carp & swans in the lake with both our sons while they were toddlers. Today, it represents a panacea for city stress...

Like the author of the link I'm attaching, I tend to guard this place as secret. However, I think you need a visit, and it's a relatively short drive/bus ride from Culver City (10 minutes North of Venice/Santa Monica, just off the Pacific Coast Highway on Sunset Blvd)...Good luck!

P.S. You & your dude are welcome to PM me if you have further questions...

I have to say that I have enjoyed the brief visits I've had in L.A. But then I am a spiritually dead money, attention, and sex-seeking speed addict.

damn, no car??? that SUCKS! well, hey, at least YOU don't have to deal with traffic!

how about this-- my final is on tuesday, but after that, i'm free and would love to show you some fun spots that aren't so "desperate..." so feel free to pm if you want to take me up on the offer!

if you want to keep it you & the boy, the BEST places to get away and feel calm are Long Beach (come and see the gorgeous canals in Naples! they're sooooo pretty right now!!!) the canyons near Angeles Crest Highway, and Laguna Beach, with all the hippie/artisans, in OC. Some of those might be contingent upon borrowing boy's parents' car, but it'd be worth it. yeah, LA proper is WEird.

Lesson #1 learned from learning to hate NYC when I used to love it:

The impression you get of a city is largely dependent on whom you are staying with.

This is especially true if you don't have ready access to transport to get away from said hosts, and all their friends who are coming over lusting after power, sex, and drugs in boorish ways.

Like I wasn't all that impressed with Atlanta, but I visited there when in the last year of a relationship that finally died partly as a result of us having moved apart. She was moving in a different direction than I was, not towards money/power/sex/drugs, but towards a life of petite bourgeoisie bliss. Consequently I found Atlanta to be a bit stifling, when I know damned well if I had stayed with someone else I might have loved it.

Hey, maybe you should try smoking a bit of weed, Gypsy--see if one of the druggies has any--though the speed freaks tend to turn their noses up at that. It might help you to chill there. Just a suggestion, if you don't like any drugs at all, never mind, lol.

You know they call Las Vegas Eastern California for a reason!

I also suggest a visit to Laguna Beach.

I hated LA too. But I have one good LA memory. My friend and I were working in La Puente, and we got to work too late one day and they wouldn't let us work. We were like, fuck it, we'll go to the ocean. Well you know how it takes hours to get anywhere. So a few hours later it was dark and we were in this really fancy residential neighborhood, and we just parked on the street, snuck between some houses, and went swimming in the ocean. Then we borrowed some towels from a patio and left them some cookies and a note thanking them for the wonderful towel placement. But yeah, other then that... run away before it eats you!

Since moving to Los Angeles in 1971, I've heard whispered legends about hidden enclaves where people actually worked straight jobs and raised families. Rumor has it that between 150 and 200 decent human beings currently inhabit Los Angeles; however, they're chained to the walls of an air-conditioned BDSM dungeon 2,500 feet below the Hollywood sign and will never see daylight again...

My 13 year-old is receiving a hands-on and comprehensive education--if you consider his sex slave relationship with his 25-year-old, heroin-addicted, scat-loving middle school teacher a small price to pay. As I write this, my ex-convict wife is ass-banging our transgendered tweaker gardener in the pool house with a diamond-encrusted strap-on we kept as a souvenir following a swinger's ball that raised funds for the last mayoral campaign...

I'll stop now; after all, it's like fishing in a barrel. If Los Angelenos had any sense, they'd take a municipal referendum and rename this steaming, reeking sewer "Los Diablos"...

I've been here for 3 years, almost exactly. I like it less every hour I'm here.

The one place I found any kind of solace was in this little park-thing at the top of Laurel Canyon, past the Houdini house and all the mansions in the hills. I couldn't tell you exactly how to get there but basically you make a left at the first light at the top of the hill on Laurel Canyon, park on the residential street on the right and then look for the park with the benches and parking lot (don't park in the lot if you're going at night otherwise you will attract cops)...to the left of the park there is a little slightly overgrown path. My friends and I would take the path through the tall weeds all the way to this tree, which had a clearing next to it and it would be SO QUIET and beautiful. It didn't feel like LA at all. You have to get ABOVE the power lines to get out of all the electrical interference. After going up there I realized why all the rich build their houses in the hills. It totally cuts out that shit that makes your head ache.

The people you come across may be interesting, but very few of them will be friend material. I can count the number of people I actually enjoy here on one hand.

I don't know if you even tried to dance here, but if you do, be prepared for some of the worst customers, management and mileage expectations imaginable. I don't even think it's worth it to go to the clubs here right now anyway. With 25 girls per DAY shift competing for $10 dances, my old club might as well just put a sign up that says "Our girls are desperate as hell! Now is the time to negotiate for extras!"
Not that they even care what is going on in the VIP. Each club generally hires as many illegal mexican immigrant "dancer/whores" as possible to keep their profits the same as when actual strip club customers came in looking for clean-ish dances. Even with the UNREAL amounts of money you are expected to tip everyone, you better hope you don't actually NEED their services because you're shit out of luck if you need a bouncer. Their job is to sit on their cell phone, counting dances and padding a few extra dances on that count on for their own tips, which will ensure your customer doesn't come back because he's being ripped off by the establishment. I mean, who wants to pay $10 for a bottle of water anyway? OH that's right, the dancers do! Meaning if you don't sell your 6 drink quota, YOU have to pay $10 per bottle of water you don't sell! How fun, huh?

The thing that I finally understood after being here for so long is that guys don't have to pay to see gorgeous women with hardly any clothes, tans, big fake breasts and platinum hair when they can walk into any old club and experience the same situation for less money. They can get a girl drunk and fuck her just for flashing money or name dropping, whereas they have to actually spend money in strip clubs here to maybe have a chance at getting a woman's phone number.
Women in LA look like strippers, stereotypically.

Whatever you do, stay out of Orange County. If you have any "east coast" to your personality, most of the residents will seem like complete aliens to you.

I wish I could transport all the cool people out of SoCal and then watch as the earth opens up and swallows the whole thing - how does that Tool song go? "Learn to swim, learn to swim..."

Where's Yek? I know she would have some marvellous things to say about LA

My only memories are associated with DisneyLand in Anaheim (is that how you spell it?), the earthquake I experienced (even if it was a small one) in Beverly Hills, the smog, Chinese Manns Theatre, and driving thru where the LA Riots had taken place only months earlier (it was a little scary for me at the time).................................yes that is how dated my memory is otherwise my only recent one was as a stop-over from Australia on the way to Vegas a few years ago now.

Otherwise, nope, I don't have much desire to "see" LA.

The only thing I like about LA is the nightlife. :3

There's some great clubs (that I can go to!!) and concerts that take place there. Otherwise, I'd rather just skip over LA and head to SB or SM.
