    Ah..the grey ghost...I always loved this breed. Great dogs....a couple things though. They have a lot of energy..make sure you can keep up. You'll need to make sure he gets a lot of excersize, or he may become destructive.

    They CANNOT be outside dogs....they MUST be kept indoors.

    Take him for training....they can be stubborn but they tend to learn easily and even at 3 he will still be trainable. You want to establish Alpha status ASAP or the dog will try to walk all over you.DONT use a choke or prong collar to train though..this breed spooks easily and once he is harmed in any way...he will become despondant and will be hard to train. Train with POSITIVE reinforcement instead...treats, praise...they will learn quickly this way.

    Make sure he is ok with cats( I think you said you have a cat)...some of them can be small animal aggreessive.

    They can be barkers...so be aware of that. Esp if they are ignored...they will bark incessently for attention.

    They are extremely loyal and protective. And usually extremely sweet and affectionate as long as they are treated well.

    Good luck!

    Guy down the road has one. Big, lots of running with him.

    This dog will not back down from a dog fight. He's actually started with other big dogs inside their fenced yard. I think they are nice looking, but very demanding.

    Yea the Grey Ghost is what they call them. They are runners and jumpers too.

    This is info. from what the owner has told me however and seeing the dog with other dogs. Big male, not altered he wants to breed. Will fight.

    Thanks ladies. Im not sure its the breed for me then. I dont want a really athletic breed coz I dont think I will be able to keep the dog exercised enough and that would not be fair to the dog. Cameron you mentioned they can be barkers that's also a negative. They are so beautiful. I really want another great dane but I do want to try another breed. Maybe I should just go with a pug - I have been considering one for a while now.

    What about a greyhound or a derivative there-of such as a Whippet or Italian Greyhound ? They are lovely dogs too and don't require as much exercise as you may think: http://www.greyhoundsafetynet.org/aboutgreyhounds.htm

    I had one for 7 years they are great dogs. Very loyal but VERY HYPER AND ACTIVE. Ours would clear a 6 foot plus fence. She was not aggressive. Did well with our cats and a little dog that we had. She put up with everything that came with a family with 4 kids. Never bit one or any of the friends but chased the Buglers out of the house when I walked in on them and turned her loose from the garage. They are Runners ours would run for 4 to 6 hours with out stopping when she had the chance. I guess the most important thing is that I want another one. They need a yard.

    Thanks I appreciate everyone's suggestions. The breed sounds too active for me, I will just have to admire other people's weimaraner's - I love their coat and their blue eyes.

    I want a dog who loves lounging around with me, is very loyal and loves human interaction and who will be satisfied just going for a walk rather than a run.
    Short haired breeds are a must.
    Im checking out that website now.
    GCG I had considered a whippet actually I think they are gorgeous.

    I'm a beagle lover myself. How can you turn down those eyes!!!

    But on the wiemeraner thing, my best friend's dog Klyde was none of those things. I've never heard him bark in his 10 years of life, he doesn't jump on people, loves his kitties and is really content to sprawl out flat on the lenai floor.

    It's not his age either, he's always been like this; an oversized lap dog.

    We are considering getting a Weimaraner. Joe doesn't really like dogs, but he fell in love with a friend's Weimaraner.

    Our friend's family is very active and outdoorsy (like us), and so this dog goes along for everything. I think that having a very active dog in our house would be perfect, as we like to be on the go (especially in the spring/summer/fall). As for the barking...if you train them right, no breed will be a barker. But, you have to learn how to be the one in charge and not let the dog just walk all over you. This is especially true for the more active/aggressive dogs. I have a friend who has a Pomeranian (and they are usually little yippy dogs) and her dog does not bark at all unless someone comes to the door and she's in the house by herself. If she starts to bark at someone, my friend gently tugs on her leash, snaps her fingers, and says firmly, "no". The dog shuts up immediately. Beagles have the tendency to howl...but that doesn't mean that you have to allow it.

    I think, though, that Whippets or Greyhounds would be a great lap dog. We know of several people who have 1 or both of these dogs and they take them for 1-2 small walks per day and the rest of the time, the dogs just lounge around, content to be petted and coddled. LOL They really are a very relaxed breed and good for small spaces (they don't need the room to run themselves to a tizzy).

    I've known a couple. They're a bit whiny, clingy type dogs. Tend to be full of nerves. They need lots of attention and excercise. Definitely not low-maintenance dogs.

    Fun fact- they're called 'Grey Ghosts' because the Germans used to attach bombs to them in the war, and then send them running the other side of the trench field. The Allies couldn't see them until too late because of their pale colour in the smoke. And then...blam.

    I grew up owning the cousin of the Weim, german short-haired pointers.

    Very energetic, and they can grow very large, depending on genetics. They need to be ran DAILY! It was great excersice for me, personally.

    Some are needy, some are not. They are big bird-hunting dogs, they need a yard and outside area, and will want to be with you indoor, and sleep with you.

    They WILL protect against strangers, if trained, they will bark and assert themselves.

    If you want a cute little lapdog, this isn't it.

    My first dog was a weimaraner my 2nd was a short hair. The weimaraner was a little bit bigger and a little more active believe it or not. The weimaraner well be about 5 to 10 pounds heaver most of the time. She did good in the house and loved being in the house with the family. She loved to sleep in the kids bed under the covers. She was strong enough to pull a wagon with a 7 and a 5 year old up a hill at a run. She pointed and flushed birds by pure instink. She was a GREAT dog and I would love to have another one. My last dog was a Boxer which was another active and very good dog. All of them are very active but very good dogs. Everything that has been said about them as been right on.

    Yes, prepare for dead birds and squirrels at your door. If you are into fitness and have the time, running with an active dog is as good as you'll get!

    I would like one myself within the next 2 years, but I'd need a place with a big yard. That breed tends not to like cats, although I see the notable exceptions.

    Our dog is supposedly a weimaraner mix. He's still a puppy and has TONS of energy. I hope your place is big and has a yard!

    Hey Jai - I was talking to my mum about your pet dog search and said how you likes weimeraners and pugs

    She agreed, with your lifestyle a wim wouldn't be suitable - they are very active dogs!

    But, she also said pugs are very active and especially for their size - I came across a pug information website and found:

    Pugs
    What's good about 'em
    What's bad about 'em

    * There are energetic Pugs, and placid Pugs.
    * Hard-headed Pugs, and sweet-natured Pugs.
    * Serious Pugs, and good-natured goofballs.
    * Introverted Pugs, and Pugs who love everyone.

    * Is small, yet sturdy and blocky, even chunky
    * Is round-headed and short-faced, with large expressive eyes and wrinkled forehead
    * Has a soft, short coat
    * Can be calm and dignified, and also lively and playful, but is almost always dependable and good-natured with people and other pets
    * Seldom gets into real mischief -- adults spend much of the day snoring

    A Pug may be right for you.

    If you don't want to deal with...

    * Stubbornness (mind of his own)
    * Snorting, snuffling, wheezing, snoring
    * Gassiness (flatulence)
    * Slowness to housebreak
    * Constant heavy shedding
    * A multitude of serious health problems

    A Pug may not be right for you.

    http://www.yourpurebredpuppy.com/faq/pugs.html for more info...

    I think it is vital for you to get a dog that suits your lifestyle so you don't end up with a grown dog you don't like because of it's natural habits..
