I'm getting an effing cold sore.I've been getting them since I was a toddler, and I haven't had one in over a year. WTF? What do I do? It's starting to appear right in the middle of my upper lip. Help?

If you can get a prescription for Valtrex. Its amazing if you get them intermittently. Now to stop from ever getting them I take Zovirax daily.

Oh thank goodness. One of my best friends is a neurosurgeon and I know he can write prescriptions so I just gave him a call to see if he could hook me up w/that. I really hope so!

i would take plenty of vitamin c and stay away from chocolate and alcohol...get rest and drink a lot of water. be as healthy as possible.

I think a topical cream like Abreva (sp?) might help too.

I'm already taking extra V-C since I started feelin a little crappy. K, no choco or booze.....I can do that at least til Friday.![]()

So apparently Valtrex can do some major damage to the kidneys, and it's more for genital herpes not a little cold sore so he called in a prescription for Acyclovere (it's a topical ointment). He said it should be all better by Friday! *whew*![]()

Get some Colloidal Silver and spray it on t regular intevals through the day. A friend of mine did this and hers was gone by the next day.

Not trying to argue with your doctor but it used for cold sores.

The difference is with genital herpes you take it everyday, and for cold sore you take it for 1 day.
"The recommended dose for VALTREX is 2 grams taken at the first sign of a cold sore, and then again about 12 hours later"
I don't think taking 4 grams a year(you said you get them once a year) is going to cause kidney damage
ETA: The cream you are getting is the same stuff I take in a pill form, the generic version of Zovirax.

1) Keep it coated in Abreva, & the rest of your lips in Carmex.
2) Take massive amounts of L-Lysine, like, 4-5 daily.
3) Eat vitamin C and protein-rich food
& Don't stress about it...You can camoflauge it with concealer and shimmery lip gloss.

You can also get a pill called Herplex from Wal Mart , cvs or some other drug store. Its like 9 bucks for 90 pills. I take that along with L Lysene and Vitamin C. I just had my first cold sore in over a year too, and it is almost gone after 3 whole days.
I know everyone says not to touch etc, but I have had cold sores since I was little and this is what i do. If you pop the little bubbles everytime they fill up and immediately wash the area with antibacterial soap , pat dry and put some of the rx cream on. Do again when the little bubbles are swollen, and take like 4-5 herplex pills every 3-4 hours in addition to some l lysene and vit C. When i pop it it heals like 50 percent faster everytime.

Yeah, I say do the valtrex. I get coldsores, and when I can feel one coming on I take half a valtrex and half twelve hours later and I never even get it. Best thing is since I only need like maybe 6 a year my dermatologist gives me free samples so I don't have to buy it!
This woman told me a homeopathic way to get rid of them is with Apis mellfica (sp?) which is a cure for beestings. She swears by it, however, I never tried it.

I apply rubbing alcohol to mine, w/q tip. A little tea tree oil also. Then I use Campho-Phenique (they have 2 kinds, 1 you use in early stages, & the other when it scabs. In the future to avoid getting them, I'd take daily garlic caps (at least one, preferably 2 a day). Sorry to hear about you getting one on an important day, that use to happen to me all the time.

Yep, they trigger in me from stress. This cream I got a prescription for Zovirax (acyclovir) is working really well though!

Ice it to take down the swelling and take Advil. This works wonders ! I don't know why your doc would tell you that. Taking Valtrex or Acyclovir immediately is the standard practice and the fastest way to heal the sore and lessen the severity of the outbreak.

Happy birthday btw!
