    Default like feelings about school

Maybe some of you can share this with me.

I was always really bad at math. Never surpassed algebra even in high school. I failed college algebra in the spring semester with an F. I don't even know what happened. I studied so hard and went to class every day. So, I retook it in the summer and got a B. Six weeks of class four days a week for three and a half hours a day. I just passed my pre-calc class with a B before the lowest test grade is dropped.

Getting such a good grade in pre-calc just makes me feel awesome right now. It finally feels like I possess the ability to learn and retain such complicated mathematical concepts. No other grade has meant this much to me.

Can any of you share any similar experiences about school? or life?

There has been evidence that some people do not "get" mathematics such as calculus and algebra until they are older. There was even talk of moving education of such mathematics to later in High School but then there was a fuss about kids being too dull as it is. Too lazy to find a link to corroborate that. I didn't do well in maths at the early stages but that had far more to do with effort than ability.

That is like, the ultimate math and grade experience ever, TM and I'm in the same boat you were in, with faking my way thru Algebra 2 and never even getting it.

I'm gonna remember you even years from now if it ever happens to me, cuz that shit is just, wow.

I'm really intensely proud of you, there is nothing like awful math experiences, and it really does not seem possible and now you know it is.

I was in 9th grade math until my senior yearof high school when I was forced to drop out.
When I went to college, I enrolled in College Algebra. For the first exam, I studied my ass off. Got a tutor, studied all week with him, stayed up all night the night before and crammed...I KNEW my shit. I was so confidant. I took the test....and I failed. I missed nearly every single question. Apparently, I had the basic formula off or something. I was so crushed I walked out in tears and never went back to that class.

In Nursing, we have to take a math exam every so often, and must pass it with 100% or else be kicked out of the program. It's a do or die thing. I was very proud of myself for passing each exam with 100% each time.

In my math class I just finished taking, we learned abtou stuff I never heard of before. logarithims and binomials and quadratic equasions.....
I passed those exams with A's or B's and although I haven't gotten my final grade back yet, I think it'lll be a B. I am very proud.

I'm just proud of the fact that the high school made me drop out cause they thought I'd never suceed, and in college, I get A's and B's. My first semester at college, i was on the presidents list for having a 4.0 gpa.

As a Calc I repeater myself, let me just say thank god for online math classes!!! Seriously, as long as you don't plan on building any bridges after graduation, take that shit online if it's offered!

I just got back from taking the final for my math class today. It was so hard! So you're definitely not the only one who's struggling.

Ugh...math. I squeaked by all through high school with C's. Then I took college algebra and had a teacher that was an angel. She did study groups on the weekend for people that wanted to come. I got an A+ in that class and to this day I still feel proud of myself for that. Congrats to you on pre-calc wow!!! That is awesome!

I am so happy for you TM^_^ I wish I could say the same. I don't know if I passed my intermidate algebra class. I am so hit or miss in that subject. I can make 80%-90% on quizzes, then bomb the test. Did any of you ladies have a similar problem? If, so how did you get over it? I have don tutors, math lab..etc. Any advice is most welcomed.
    Once again Congrats ladies ^_^

Yeah, that was how I felt getting an A in my Logic class. Doing complicated proof equations...meta-math?! Eep. But somehow I rocked in. And I never got higher than a B+ at math in high school. I sucked at it. I think I realized it was hard for me, which discouraged me from trying...because, you know, better to quit than fail and all that.

But university changed that for me. I'd still never do math voluntarily. I can relate to that feeling, though. It's a fantastic one!

I don't like math, never have. I passed algebra 2 with B's, but only cause I busted my ass. I did okay at geometry though. I took college algebra, basic level...failed it horrendously. Took Statistics, and never had to open my book or study and got an A...weird. Particularly since I know so many people who are great at math, yet hate statistics and sucked at it.

Dude, I never even learned all my multiplication tables, lol, yet I seem to manage in the real world well enough.

I did learn to balance a checkbook in 3rd grade...lets hear it for way too expensive private schools, lol.

I think they shouldnt teach anything beyond basic math until at least high school, maybe college.

I'm really proud of you, Tigers--what an inspirational story! I was always terrible at math, but I have no inspirational ending...I took a last math class in high school and avoided it from then on--only arts for me. Now here I am a professor. I spend a lot of time with a guy who is one of our great scientists, and our discussions are often on the same lines...making me think that the arts and sciences are really close relatives, going after, ultimately, the same thing. So who knows? Maybe I, too, could do well at math now. I'm really glad to hear your story.

It reminds me of something John Kennedy said: that we don't choose to go to the moon because it is easy, but because it is hard, and we gain in character from things that stretch us to make us succeed. Sounds like you've given yourself a lifelong lesson. Way to go.

I used to cry over my math homework, it was so hard. I didn't figure out long division until 5th grade. (When I did, I was delighted- it was soo cool! My teacher thought my happiness over long division was so cute.)

I'm getting better at math as an adult, probably from counting out cash income.....

    TM-that's awesome!

I was really good in math in school-honors and all that. Never did calc, but did trig and loved it. I did have some good teachers and that makes a serious difference.

Took Statistics my first year of college (two years ago)-barely passed it! Everyone I know thought it was easy, but I squeaked by with a C. I just don't get it-I could do the calculator part, but I have no idea what it means.

And now I have to take algebra 2, because I didn't pass the placement test at the school I transfered to. I hope my smart comes back. I am a bit nervous. Jhuka, I want to think that math and the arts are related. I do.

There are some people in my 200+ person stats class that get the material right away and don't even take notes.

    I hate them.

    just kidding

There are also doctors and people with phds in bench science (meaning biochem or genetics or whatever) that have as much of a hard time as I do.

When a person that does research on the genetic basis of cancer tells me that they are having problems with statistics, it makes me feel a whole lot better.

Then said person sends me help for another class on cancer chemoprevention and phase two enzymes and I am back to feeling like totally uneducated and dumb.

    LOL

Hmm, I failed a low-level French class, yet for some reason am still able to speak it a bit when I'm drunk. Does that count?

    TM:

I dropped out of UCLA when I was 20 and followed my ex-fiancée to Australia. Nine years later, I returned and switched my major from English Lit. to Psychology, which meant taking a slew of Earth/Life Science courses--and MATH!

I had always detested math as a dull, rational discipline devoid of art and creativity. After the first 3 weeks back at school, feeling rusty and defeated, I approached my mega-nerd precalculus professor and told him that I was withdrawing from school before the first midterm. He looked me squarely in the eyes and said, "What if you quit something every time it gets difficult? Where will that get you?" Corny, huh? It worked, though, 'cause I wasn't gonna let any quantum geek who wore coke-bottle glasses punk me like that!

So, I stayed in that class/school, began studying with my classmates (particularly the hottie sitting next to me), and passed the class. Following finals, I began dating my classroom crush and married her 2 years later.

When I finished graduate school years later, I looked up that "goofy" professor and telephoned him. I told him gratefully that his advice had not been wasted, and that I had a wife, son and career to thank him for. After hanging up, I sniffled like a little bitch for a few minutes...

Life is it's own classroom, sometimes...
