Default The Stop Smoking Support Thread

For anyone with a desire to quit smoking.
    Here's the plan:
Devise your stragedy to stop smoking. Really plan it all out. I recommend using this site
to help you devise a plan.
    Set your quit date.
During the interrim between now and your quit date, continue to develop your plan to quit. Figure out how to control the cravings, and how you plan to quit.( Meds, gum, pills, patch, cold turkey)
Post your quit date and stop smoking plan in this thread, it would be nice if we all have countdown tickers to the quit date.

After your quit date, you can use this thread to track your progress, cravings, and find support to fight through cravings.

Also post tips and tricks for what helps you fight through cravings.

Remember: It only takes nicotine 72 hours to completly leave your system! After that, you just have to fight the mental addiction!!

    Good Luck!!!

    My stats:
3 + pack a day smoker. Must smoke within 5 minutes of waking up. Smoke more during stressful periods.

    My smoking triggers:
    Sitting at the computer
    Driving
    Partying/drinking

    My Quit Date:
    Jan. 1st

    My Quit Plan:
Nicorette gum to help fight really bad cravings.
Between now and quit date attempt to scale back smoking by only smoking once every half hour and delaying first smoke of the day by 15 minutes.
Also no smoking in the car from now on.

    My plan to fight Cravings:
    Take a shower
    Go for a walk
    play with the cats
    eat pretzel sticks
Have a piece of nicorette gum if I absolutly must.

*remember that most craving only last less than 1 minute!!
I can get through a minute!

    14 days till quit date
    How I did today:
I did smoke within 5 minutes of waking up. I couldn't resist. Will try again tomorrow. I have been sucessful in only smoking once every 15 minutes. After my 5th cig of the day, I will only smoke once every half hour.
I am tracking each and every cig I have by writing it down. I want to become conscious and aware every time I smoke, and track just how bad I wanted it. I am already discovering that I don't crave them as bad as I thought.

Its tough, but it must all work together. The business planning stuff is easy for me, its a requirement of my practice, I've done the prelim work. It takes annual goals and breaks them down to daily activity.

Financial plan, well that's what I do, so its just a savings/investments revamp over the next year.

The rest of the stuff...not so easy. Working out will take care of itself, I'm doing 3x a week personal training.

    Eating and smoking are challenges.

Kaylinn, why is all the best stuff in life so bad for us?

That's the one thing I don't have!! Really, no one in my lineup is inspiring me right now. I just jerked off 3 times. I really need to meet a nice new guy, but I havn't been going out much.

Maybe I'll try going back to AA, to meet a guy. Really, I actually thought about doing that earlier. How desperate and pathetic can I be???

I'm in and I signed up on that site.

    My stats:
3/4 pack a day smoker. Must smoke within 5 minutes of waking up. Smoke more during stressful periods.

    My smoking triggers:
    Driving
    Talking on the phone
    Heavy Meal

    My Quit Date:
    Jan. 1st

    My Quit Plan:
    Chantix
    Not going outside with coworkers
Not going outside after eating in a restaurant
No smoking while driving starting tomorrow morning

    My plan to fight Cravings:
Jump on the elliptical if at home
Playing with rubber bands or paper clips
Eating whatever the heck I want (small weight gain is better than smoking)
Run up and down the stairs if at work
    Hit up SW for support
Drink more water and less alcohol

    14 days till quit date

    How I did today:
Terrible. Smoked all the way to and from work. Went out to "burn" 3x with coworkers. Came home and had another.

I can do this. I've done it before.

I need to change my mindset enough to know that I can't go back this time.

I need to accept that my body will change somewhat and that I'll be able to excercise better and longer to take off the extra weight once I'm smoke free.

I want to see my grandchildren someday.

I want to walk around not chewing a ton of gum because I'm afraid I have cigarette breath.

Good luck to all my SW friends. I'm so glad I have you to quit with and to support me. I promise that I'll be there for you as well.
    Here's to good health!

I should probably ask Kat if I can hire her to advise me on developing a financial plan that would include Miss D and and a reasonable retirement income. I hope they are not mutually exclusive.

I don't know, we have to look at your cashflow, retirement cashflow needs, savings so far, and what will bridge that gap, assuming there is one.

If you and your family are all set to re-create your retirement lifestyle off of your investments and social security, then Miss D is a discretionary expense you can afford.

DA, good luck on the Chantix. It really is a wonderful aid to stop smoking, if the side effects don't get to you to much.
It really makes you just not even thiink about smoking.

I've also read that the thing with quitting, this sounds easier than it is, I'm sure...but you just don't give youself the option. You can't think oh god, I crave it so bad, I want it...Just gotta think, I'm a nonsmoker now. It isn't an option. Period.

Oh yeah/...I've been writing down each cig I have, what time, and how bad I wanted it...and I am finding that I can make myself wait, it's not that hard, and I don't crave them as bad as I thought. Trackign my smoking is a great tool.
After this week, I'm gonna cut back even more, and go for an hour between smokes...keep tapering off, and then on Jan 1st, that's it. FInsihed.

I am excited abotu the thought of going back to the gym and beign able to exercise. Isn't that pathetic? I;'m excited abotu beign able to walk and breathe at the same time. For fucks sake, I'm onyl 26 years old. I shouldn't feel like this.

At least you're doing something about it while you're younger. I'm 41 and scared to death that I might have done something irreversible.

I have two coworkers on Chantix and they're doing well. One felt a little dizziness but it went away.

I'm dizzy most of the time anyway!

^ My boyfriend works with several people who sucessfully stopped smoking with it.
30& of people experience side effects on it. That's pretty high. But then again, it just depends on how bad yrou side effects are, and how much your willing to tolerate.
For me, the nausea was just to bad to cope with. Such a shame. I even tried breaking the pills in half, but that didnt work.
If I come across some extra christmas money, I would like to make an appt. with the doctor and maybe try an antidepressant. I need one anyway, lol.

Fortunately my insurance is good, and I got the super plan this year, since I used it so much last year. I found a pretty good doc just recently, he gave me a good plan for my backpain. I'm sure he will prescribe me Chantix, or whatever works.

Some time ago, I tried those Nicotine lozenges, and I highly recommend you do not use them. They made my throat close up to the point where I began to panic and couldn't breathe. You aren't supposed to swallow at all when its in your mouth, but I accidently swallowed a bit of saliva with lozenge juice in it.

Just awful, I was driving, and had to pull over, I couldn't handle it.

    I almost missed this thread!

I want to join....because I want to quit. But I KNOW that I will not make it through Dec and Jan without smoking. Bad bad bad timing. So, I told myself my birthday (Feb 7th) would be the end of the smoking, that I wanted to taper off enough between now and then that by that date I should be ready to go.

Is that too far away to participate here?

This is uch a great thread. I am in the middle of quitting roght now and have been taking a new drug called Chantix. I just want to say that I don't think i'd being doing as well without it.

At the risk of sounding like a model from an infomercial I'm going to tell you about my expreince in hopes that it may help someone.

I've tried to seriously quit a handful of times and never lasted more than a week, I would always get upset or stressed out and smoke one, and then it would be over. I was VERY frustrated with myself b/c it is horrible for my health and even worse for my daughter's even though I don't smoke in the house or anywhere around her.

Reading something I saw an ad for Chantix and asked my family dr at my daughters next appt and he said he loves the stuff and thinks it helps so he gave it to me.

I took it for 4 days before I really noticed anything, but my urge to smoke was less frequent and not a strong. A week later my urge to smoke was all but gone, it seemed it was more habit than actual craving. I've been working on the habit part, but I will give Chantix about 98% of the credit b/c I just don't want to smoke, and when I do have a smoke I take maybe 3 hits and am like wtf am I doing this is gross and toss it.

It has been about 2 and a half-3 weeks now and i don't want to smoke at all, not when I wake up, not after I eat nothing. Oh yeah I didn't mention it's fianls week and I'm a premed student and my bf(father of my child) have been fighting all weekend long b/c he won't leave, and other reasons.

I do smoke when he's around, but if I leave the house or don't have any smokes, i don't even think about it.

I have state insurance and they covered 100% of it, but if you don't have insurance it is $125 a month from walgreens, IMO the cost is worth it b/c you will
    A. save more than what you spent on the drug from not buying smokes
    B. won't get horrible health problems down the road (which also cost $$$)

If anyone has any questions feel free to IM me or something, I would love to help, i tell everyone that will listen about this stuff, it seriously is awsome and a few others that have taken it agree.

Good luck to everyone!!!! You will be better off without that crap lol

K, I joined that site as well. So much great information!

I know it said to set your quit date for within 3 weeks...but I also know it wont happen. The MIL will be here, along with my mother (they rip each others heads off by the way) and a slew of other lovable (if not totally batshitcrazy) family members. Then New Years I'm camping with a huge group of people. I'll smoke. I know it.

So I set my quit date to my birthday. Feb 7th. I planned out how I'll qit. Enlisted the help of my hubby and kiddo. Damn if that kid isn't amazing at making a person feel horrible about smoking!!!

As it is I am down to 5 to 8 cigs a day.

I stopped smoking in my car completely. I still smoke while on the phone with people and when I get stressed out or bored.

Right now I'm working on when I get a craving, to see how long I can hold off on the craving, until hopefully it passes. I'm using my computer work to distract me, lots of gum still and salty stuff. Salty stuff seems to help curb the cravings.

I also keep a little cup full of those little drink straws by my desk to fidget and chew on when need be.

So we'll see how it goes!

5 cigs if I am having a busy day and don't have time to think about it. 8 (or so) on other days.

It took me a long long time to get to this point even. But hopefully this all will help me get over that final hump, and be done with it forever!

You can do it Kay, you know you can.
