I've never heard of a utility company refusing to give service to someone with shitty credit...I HAVE heard they will charge a lot of money as a "deposit" for someone with shitty credit. I had a friend who had to give ComEd a $450 "deposit" to get electric service. They credited the $450 after a year...but still.
You can always call and see what happens.
Why don't you just pay them? WTF? Aren't you a stripper?

If you're talking about natural gas, there isn't any option to go to a 'different' gas company since there is only one approved gas delivery company in any given area.

I don't know where you live, but check with your state public service commission to see what the rules are. Or, check with the gas company. The alternative is electric. Not cheap, nor particularly efficient. But, if you are current with the electric company, change over. A new heater and air conditioner shouldn't cost more than four or five grand, installed. Heck of a way to beat a $800 bill.![]()
With natural gas at my last place we rented the tank. So, the only way to get service thru a different company was to have that tank removed and a new one installed.
they turned it off in December? I'd check to see if thats legal, most states actually have laws that prohibit companies from turning off heat from october to april because so many people end up freezing to death. Yes you have a huge bill, if you pay it off they should turn it back on though. And even if you can't, like i said many states don't allow companies to pull that in the winter, they're usually forced to wait til spring which would give you time to come up with the money.
edit: reread that, how many months ago did they turn your gas off?
I was planning on paying them sweet-heart, so your comment is irrelevant. I asked the gas company if I could get services restored after paying the bill, and they said "when the balance is paid in full, then we will let you know IF you can get them restored". So, I told my roomate to see if he could get it in his name, and they denied him based on CREDIT (He applied online and the exact words were something like "We can not provide service to you at this time due to report from Equifax" or something).
I didn't wanna pay my balance until I knew for sure they would restore my services. I was asking if anyone knew where I could find a company to serve to people with low credit, not whether or not I should pay a bill I owe. Therefore, since I found a company that will serve me, I'm not paying GA gas the 800 I owe them until after the holidays.![]()
Soo...the new company is coming to turn my heat on Friday- Yay!

Well, shit...you lucked out! Here we have ONE gas company. ONE electric company and 4 gazillion phone companies. I would like nothing more than to tell ComEd to fuck off and find a new electric company...but since they have monopolized the state...eh.
Well, glad you got it taken care of.
I think we only have one choice here as well. So it you don't pay your bills, your SOL.

VG- One gas company?? Wow, that sucks. Yea after I did some research I found alot of other ones here in Atlanta. And there's only ONE that will serve people with low credit! Can you believe that?? I'm just glad I found them. It's so nice having HEAT!![]()

^^^ two curiosity questions ...
Are you talking about 'bottled gas' i.e. Propane gas where you have a tank that a company comes around to fill up regularly, or are you talking about natural gas delivered by a public utility through pipelines under the streets ? All of us that are referring to only having one gas company are referring to natural gas, where like electricity there is only one approved utility company in any given area - so if you piss them off and they shut you off, you're pretty much screwed.
Second question is how much extra did you wind up paying in the price per gallon (maybe price per pound or price per 100 cubic feet ?) from the company that serves people with low credit ratings, versus the selling price at one of the other companies that only deal with customers that have good credit ratings and pay their bills regularly ? I'm guessing that the price was 10% higher or more.
