Thumbs up Bring Your Own Bag

    http://c3.newdream.org/campaigns/c3/...64eb6f3ac47a7/

    Tips on taking this pledge:

Make it a habit to bring a few reusable bags wherever you go. Stash a couple in the car and write a reminder at the top of your grocery list. Dont have any reliable bags? STAY VOCAL is donating a percentage of each reusable bag purchased through their online store to New American Dream, while ReusableBags.com is offering a 20 percent discount to anyone who takes the December C3 pledge. For more information and resources, please visit our new Reusable Bags page in our Conscious Consumer Marketplace. Want to take more actions against disposable bags? Visit ReusableBags.com's action page for ideas.

Thought someone out there might want to know about this.. I do it already so I don't need some pledge to remind me

^ Lol, most of Australia does it so they don't need no stinkin' pledge!

Seriously, really environmentally conscious country. I have solar panels, a water tank, reusable bags and a compost heap just at the house.

I wish I could say that I brought my own bags... but I don't. I DO reuse my bags, though. Like, ferret litter box liners and trash can liners for the plastic ones and the paper ones hold my recycling until I take it out (and then the paper gets recycled, too).

I do have one question... WHy do they ask paper or plasic?? Which is better??

I've been trying to remember to do this. I keep bringing the bags indoors and leaving them there. WHY must everything be in its own little bag? I've even had cashiers insist on putting stuff in a bag, when I could just hold it, or put it in a bag I already had. I have a whole collection of bags that I use for garbage and stuff.

It's par for the course here in Australia. Everyone uses them for everything not just shopping! It's almost "trendy" to be seen with one... plus they come in so much variety now compared to the 'old days' of just the one variety...

That's the reason why I don't need no pledge. We are already environmentally friendly enough: water saving devices, worm farm, re-usable shopping bags, etc.

I bought another the other day and the cashier was so rude about it and told me he didn't think they were any good. I don't get why people freak out on bag-bringing?

I so want a worm farm! And I want the girl upstairs to stop taking hour-long showers. That would be a water-saver right there!

I bring my own bags. It is great entertainment watching the wal-mart clerks trying to figure out how pack groceries in canvas bags.

I've gotten responses like: "I don't think I'm allowed to use your bags."

I just smile and say "If it is a problem, just hand me the items and I'll pack them up myself."

Then I get the blank stare. Usually the clerk will try to pack my purchases in the plastic wal mart bags first before loading them into the canvas bags.

I guess if a person was smart, he/she wouldn't be working as a wal mart checker. To the unlucky clerks that try to give me plastic bags, they get to listen to the sermon about protecting the planet, preventing global warming, preserving species blah, blah, blah.

That sure gets the checkers moving quickly to get me out of the store.

It's the number one reason I wanted to move out of a unit into a place with my own little piece of 'yard' because then I can have a worm farm. I love my worms.

As for the showers, I could post you the timer that all households here in QLD got to have 4 min long showers! Yes, it's been advertised, advised and everything widely... 4minutes is what we are meant to be in the shower for.. lol!

It seems like the USA is so backwards environmentally. Why is it so hard for you guys yet so easy for us here in Australia?

Friends of mine in Britain are looking into worm farms. They have a lil back garden they are trying to grow stuff in as well.So cute.

Hahaha-a four minute shower timer would go over very badly here! I mean I like a good ten-fifteen minute hot shower sometimes, but more than that-what ARE you doing in there?

It's hard for us because we're convinced we're right. You've seen the opinions on guns, etc. We have the best way damnit! The end! We've grown so used to wasting stuff that we can't get overselves. See: Hummers, individually wrapped everything, my seminar insisting we do 25 page handouts instead of a powerpoint presentation.

Seriously, I've gotten slack for holding onto stuff to recycle it. It's a whole attitude.

Because most of us Americans are fat, lazy, and selfish. I know I'm nowhere near perfect, but I get so disgusted with people here.

And I'm guilty of taking too-long showers . I think that's gonna be part of my new years resolution. As great as a long hot shower feels, there are more important things than that! Like the environment!

So true. I think a lot of the problem we have where I live is that all the utils are included so people feel entitled. But pretty much about 90% of the people I know are wasteful.

In Australia people in shops look at you like you're some kind of disase if you so much as ask for a plastic bag. Sometimes I forget my woolies bag. I'm human! One plastic bag is not going to ruin the world for your grandchildren.. I promise to reuse it for my garbage when I get home! I really can't carry 8+ items home without one. And yes, I walked instead of driving.

I'm seriously afraid to ask for a bag these days.. I always seem to end up buying more and more of the store bags until it just gets plain ridiculous. All for fear of the look you get when you ask for a plastic bag.

God forbid I forget to toss one of the 400 canvas bags we have into the car and come home with plastic! I'd get a sermon of Paris-like proportions. All of the grocery stores here, even Fred Meyer, give you a nickel credit for bringing your own bag. No weird looks, either.

Seriously, it's one of the easiest things to do and there's really no excuse. Just get into the habit and then you'll always remember a bag when you do your shopping.

I dug up this thread to let everyone know that it actually inspired me to bring my own bag. It rules. I feel good about myself and I get to use a good, sturdy bag without worrying about the straps breaking or anything.

I bring my owm bags about 1/2 of the time. I get paper, and use them for my trash, the other 1/2. If I want to be in the water for a long time, I bathe. In the shower, the both of us take at most 20 minutes. And that's if I wash my hair and shave, it's usually 10.

I do waste a lot of water by dishes, but oh well. Our water bill is always 20-30$, so I must not use that much.
