    Default Cosmetology school

I am currently in an aesthetics program and really not liking it. I was thinking of cosmetology-- now, I live in a rural area and the schools aren't super great. I don't want to move to a place where I don't know anyone to go to school. Does the quality REALLY matter, or do you just learn how to perfect what u learn when you apprentice?

At my school everything they taught us was for passing the state board.

I also worked part time at a salon and it is so different. Pick a school with high passing rates.

    Completely agree!!!

If you decide to assist after you get your lisence (which I highly recommend doing), try to find a salon that participates in the KRS/Summit system... those salons tend to be more focused on educating thier assistants and giving them the tools to be successful when they finally get behind the chair rather than making you thier bitch.

Also, save up so that you can take advanced professional clasess and attend large trade shows... The top 20% of salon professionals take 2-4 education classes per year. Read Michael Cole's "A Little Off the Top" for motivation that's applicable in the real world.

^^ Yup.... I went to tons of trade shows - you can get school credit for them too. I learned a bit more than passing board because my school taught the Pivot Point program but if I could do it over again I would have gone to the cheaper, crappier school....

Is there a website that lists trade shows?

I'm going to be in a rural area of SC so I would probably be commuting to Charlotte/ATL/FL to check em out.

And yes, I do want to assist, are KRS/Summit popular thru out the whole country?

The school should know about trade shows. My school had lists of them - ones as far as Los Angeles (7 hrs away) and even the big ones in Chicago, Vegas and all around the country.

Do a google search for hair shows!

I agree about picking a school with high passing rates. Just because one attends a high end private cosmo school doesn't mean it will look better on their resume. That's what I have seen from experience at my old salon.

As far as I remember, going to cosmetology school will only teach you what you need to know in order to pass your state board exam. You will "re-learn" all the salon techniques as an assistant working at the salon. That is, if you aren't renting out your own chair.

All the new hires at my salon had to assist for about 6 months before they were given their own chair. It was mandatory. This included taking written and hands on classes, once or twice a week.

    Good luck with your choice!

Assisting is a great idea. Im going straight into working BUT Im working at a quick cuts place while I build confidence then Ill go rent a station somewhere...

Whats funny is I for a while wished I had done aesthetics instead of cosmo. I love giving facials and doing makeup! I know I could do aesthetics with my license... If Im not into working at this salon Ill probably look for a position in that field.

Check with local (or your nearby large city) supply stores that sell to professionals only (State, Peel's, Beauty Alliance, etc.) they're typically the creators and sponsers of most shows. Also, supply stores are usually responsible for bringing in classes and seminars. You'll have every vendor on earth give 30-120 minute demonstrations at a trade show which is great to pick up easy techniques and learn trends, but investing in hands on classes is where you'll really learn new techniques.

When you call salons to ask for an interview, ask if they are a salon (Warning, the website is super cheesy!). A lot of Redken salons are, but the system is used by many salons regardless of the line(s) they use.

My school only let me take 12 hrs credit on my time card from any hair shows.

Everything I learned in school we do not do in the salon. God I hate finger waves and pin curls.

OMG I LOVE fingerwaves and pincurls. I can do so many variations and styles. I did them all the time in school....

But about 98% of the school hated them....

Fingerwaves......are those like the 1920s style waves? And pincurls I'm guessing are curls you pin up?

I'm definately in the 98%... hate doing fingerwaves!!! Luckily, they're not part of the practical exam so I didn't have to learn them beyond the half day we spent in class. Then again, I hate updo's, too. I'm just not into finishing at all... I'd be perfectly happy specializing in color but my salon doesn't practice that.

Yes, finger waves are '20's style waves... pincurls are another form of wet setting the hair. On wet, gelled hair, you wrap a peice of hair around your finger and pin it up until it completely dries... Pain in the ass. All those techniques are beauty school staples that have been replaced with modern hot tool techniques in the real world... prepare to step back into 1960 when you go to cosmetology school.

Serious tho. They really to do some updating...

We have to do fingerwaves, pincurls and curlers in a wet set for board. Takes me 10 minutes to do the whole thing. I was always the fastest in the class.

Thing with fingerwaves is it takes forever to learn but once you got it down you have it and its easy. Its just getting to that point that is the hard point.

I can do a whole set of very nice fingerwaves in 3 minutes. This is on a doll but on real people it takes longer - 20 minutes.
