    Default insomnia trouble staying asleep

If there is one thing I have always been good at it's sleeping. I usually sleep 9-10 hours per night and don't wake up at all during the night.

Since my surgery (rhinoplasty/septoplasty/breast augmentation) which was 3.5 weeks ago I simply cannot seem to STAY ASLEEP. Im going insane here and I really need reassurance that I will be able to sleep like I used to.

I have a feeling that it is because my nose is still quite blocked from the surgery but who knows? I have felt anxious as well but I am feeling a lot better now.

I am exhausted. I have circles under my eyes from sleep deprivation. I seem to wake up every couple of hours. It's fucking awful.

Please help me! I don't know what is causing this.

Could it be from the pain meds? Im only taking neurofen now coz my sinuses are quite painful.

I just want to be able to sleep properly like I used to.

Maybe try tylenol pm, or some other OTC non-habit forming sleep aid?

I am nocturnal...I can never sleep at night but I'll sleep all day if I can... so I feel your pain. Sometimes I get so pissed b/c I'm lying in bed for hours and still can't sleep, meanwhile my boyfriend is beside me, all cozy and balls deep in his pillow and drooling

I'd call your Dr..esp if you feel it is because you arent breathing well.
I feel your pain..even with my sleeping pills I have barely been sleeping all week. Switching to night shift has fucked with my sleep patterns. I've been lying awake with my eyes burning until 9,10,11 in the morning. Sucks.

I've been dealing with life long insomnia. I usually go for natural cures...they're (generally) safer and cheaper. Here's some stuff that works for me:

Melatonin- a naturally occurring chemical in the brain that promotes sleep. Can be bought in supplement form. I've found that the Trader Joe brand works best for me, (and they're chewable and minty!) but you can find them at Walmart or any drugstore.

Lavender, chamomile, passionflower- All relaxing herbs. I love the way chamomile tastes in tea. They can all be found in tea or tincture form. Lavender oil is also really nice if you put a couple drops on your pillow.

As for your nose, I'm assuming that you're congested? (Never had a BA so I don't know how that works...) I've found that both eucalyptus oil and tea tree oil help really well with congestion. Either boil a pot of water and add a couple drops of oil and breathe in the steam before bedtime, or you can just get a rag wet with warm water and put a couple drops on that and breathe it in.

I hope this helps! Sleep tight!

When I have trouble sleeping, I take 3 mg of Melatonin. This is a natural substance and you can buy it any store that sells vitamins, supplements, etc. (Any drug store, Wal-Mart, etc.)

Take Melatonin one to two hours before you go to sleep. One tablet will make you feel tired/drowsy for about 12 hours. Usually, after taking one of these, I'll sleep for 8 straight hours, even if I'm upset or tense.

I'll take Melatonin 1 to 3 days to catch up on sleep.

Also, if I'm having trouble sleeping, I'll keep the TV's volume on low with something really boring on like political or religious broadcasts.

I'm concerned that you're still congested and having sinus pain 3.5 weeks after a rhinoplasty/septoplasty.

Did you have a post-operative pack or stent to hold the cartilage in place? That's usually removed at one week or so and you should have no appreciable sinus blockage after about two weeks. Pain at nearly a month post-op is a reason to see your doctor.

If you normally breathe through your nose during sleep, the combination of discomfort and breating through your mouth are often enough to wake you up before you've had a full night's sleep. For one, it dehydrates you and can even change your breathing pattern.

Slow breathing is critical to restful sleep. You can train yourself to fall asleep by breathing relaxation alone, but it would be hard for you to concentrate if you still have pain/discomfort.

You can knock out the anxiety and sleeplessness with something like Klonopin or Ativan or any of the benzos, for that matter. Dalmane and Halcion might be better for long-acting benefits. You can also try something like Ambien or Lunesta, both of which are designed to keep you asleep throughout the night. These are receptor agonists, not benzos, and sometimes have odd side effects like you wake up suddenly and realize you are driving your car down the street in the middle of the night.

my surgeon said it's normal?? Im concerned about it too tho.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I have never heard of melatonin but will have a look for it.

My doctor did give me valium but it didn't help with staying asleep and I dont really like taking things like that coz I'm worried I'll get addicted to it.

I had dissolving packing in my nose for 5 days post operatively. A week ago the ENT surgeon removed two large scabs (I know yuck) from my nostrils and that allowed me to breath a little better. He said that the pain and congestion should lessen in the next couple of weeks
I also mentioned it to the plastic surgeon and he also said it's all normal and said I might feel like this for a few more weeks til months after the surgery which was very distressing to hear.
I told him it felt like I had a sinus infection and he said I definately don't have an infection but the nose heals itself by producing mucus.

I do think the difference in breathing is effecting my sleeping. I never had trouble breathing before, I had problems with recurrent sinus infections. I really hope this clears up very soon before I go crazy from sleep deprivation - well I actually did get a full 8 hours last night so hopefully that will continue.

I have a herbal supplement called valerian but didn't notice much effect from it.
I'm trying to sleep naturally but if I continue not being able to I will take something.

    Thanks.
