Default Kittens behaving strangely at pet store

I was at my local shopping centre just before and noticed some kittens acting very strangely (well perhaps not I don't know). They were 3 siamese kittens and they were doing what appeared to be suckling from eachother and moving the claws (like how they stimulate the mothers milk glands). One kitten was getting more attention from the other two and was trying to escape and all it's fur was wet from the other two fanatically trying to suckle from it.

I don't know a lot about kittens, maybe this is normal but I have never seen it before when I have seen kittens in pet stores.

A woman walked up and started looking and said to me "how sad they must be too young to be away from their mother". I wonder if this was true?

Some other people walked up and were saying "what are those kittens doing?".

I was distressing to see. I am a huge animal lover and if they are selling kittens that are too young to be away from their mother I would report it but they did look big enough to be around 8 weeks old.

That's exactly it. They were weaned too early. My cat does this (to herself, lol!).

Yup, taken away too soon, poor babies. My cats did this when their mum died before they could be weaned.

yep. I had a maine coon she was 3 years old and still tried to suckle. She would get a corner of my teeshirt and suck on it while kneading her paws.

Oh that's so sad. They shouldn't be allowed to do that. My boyfriend had a kitten who used to chew on my hair at night and kneed my hair. Maybe it was doing this too?

^ Probably. One of the cutest things I've ever woken up to was a tiny kitten attempting to suckle my earlobe.

Yep. We had a cat that we found outside during the winter and she would try to suckle anything she could before she went to sleep. It was cute and sad all at the same time. The vet said it was because she was way too young to be away from her mother.

Could be. Or not. Kittens will latch on to each other for comfort even after 8 weeks of age. And they have been known to suckle each other. Some sick people try to pawn off kittens at 5 to 6 weeks when they still need moms milk to fight off disease...how sad if they are under 8 weeks.

One way to find out. Every state has law. A petstore can't take in kittens under 8 weeks of age. They probably have a huge price on them and are papered. Act interested. Papers have to show proof of age. Then kindly pass up the offer.

I'm talking Vet. papers. Owner has to carry them. Petstores have strict regulations when it comes to kittens, pups, birds etc. Once monthly the petstores here (Fl) have a Vet. appointed walk through and check on the animals. Anyone acting strange gets a file on them and the owner sited if found in fault.

These kittens are stressed and suffering from separation anxiety. Taken to soon from their mother. The mother is probably sufferring to from swollen milk glands and no kittens to release the pressure. Maybe the state, if in TX, should tax pet stores $5 per mammal pet sold to help animal victims deal with anxiety.

Our old siamese used to suck on fuzzy blankets. We found out from the vet after we got her that she was younger than we were told.

    Pet stores suck.

My old cat used to do the knead/suckle thing, too. He did it his whole life. I know it was because he was probably taken from his mother too soon, but man was it cute. He'd leave little wet spots all over your shirt. He only did it when he was in snuggle mode, and always purred loudly while doing it. One of our current cats is obsessed with MrsC's long hair and loves to make a nest in at night.

i went to a local pet store a few weeks ago. i won't go again.

    - a snake was ramming his head against the walls of his tank. i've never seen that and it broke my heart.

    - bunnies were cramped in thier cages so closely that one had to stand on the food dish to get his own space.

    - birds in thier cages had no room to fly, they had to sit in a row on the perch in the cage.

    lame.

we had a cat that would do that to a big stuffed racoon we had. We have pictures of it. Never thought what would cause it... my mom did get him from a pet store...

On a side note. I got a kitten from PetSmart for my daughter about 3 years ago and the kitten died 5 days later. I will never adopt from a store again...

that is horrible!! Poor kitties ...

I would be making a complaint to the rspca or other governing bodies and let them know what you saw - it may be possible that they are already under investigation and they (authorities) just need more complaints to file a case against them (the pet store/store owners)

Unfortunantely you will find a teen behind the counter who only likes the 'cute' factor of the pet and not actually know anything about the pet

Shame, because a huge amount of new pets will end up at the RSPCA this Christmas because of unwanted gifts! Shame really!!

Note to self - one day I will own a pet shop that only sells kittens and puppies and cats and dogs from the RSPCA rather then creating a need for puppy and kitten mills... sigh

ALee ... there are a few local businesses on the Gold Coast that "sell" Animal Welfare League cats and dogs. So it is possible to do as there are businesses already doing it

    http://www.saynotoanimalsinpetshops.com/

I say report the shop. Whilst all my previous cats prior to Bibs were pet shop bought. Honestly? I would buy from the shelter in a heartbeat. It isn't 'normal' for kittens to be doing it.

I did have one pet shop bought cat that would suck her own tit/teet at times. It was distressing for me to see her do it .. I knew it wasn't "right".

A few places(big stores like Pet Smart) here work with the humane society to adopt out cats and dogs.

Otherwise..I hate pet stores. 99.9% of the animals there are poorly bred, poorly raised and treated like any other commodoty instead of a living breathing creature with feelings.

    Oh that is so sad!

Especially to hear that tonight of all nights. I would love so much to have a poor little kitty missing its mommy to console, but alas.

But on a more positive note, it is cute when they do the nursing body language, etc. The last kitten I was around for any length of time was my last SO's, an adorable Siamese. It would try to nurse anything resembling a nipple at all, and it was healthy and taken from mommy kitty at the right age.

My kitten was a rescue kitten and he was away from his mother too early ( we had to rescue him ourselves that early or else he wouldn't have made it at all). I bottle-fed him and worked my little heart out taking care of him and he turned out just fine. He's almost a year old now but he still likes to knead on me or soft things when he's sleepy or snuggly though.

Thats awful about the crowded pet stores. It makes me so sad and angry that people are able to profit from mistreating animals that way!!

I have been a supporter and member of the RSPCA since I was a kid. I donate to them and support many of their causes. I am going to return to the store and speak to someone who works there and ask about their age. I will then determine if I need to take further action. Someone needs to speak up for animals since they cannot protect themselves.

This makes me sad. When I was younger, my ex-hubby and I got a kitten when he was about 6 weeks old, and he used to do this to our ear lobes while we slept at night. We didn't know why he was doing that until somebody told us that it was because he was snatched away from his mommy way too early.

Mmm I think that's slightly cute if the kitty only did it when it could sneak up because you guys were sleeping...
(I probably think that as I had a baby kitty that would find the tickliest parts of my face by systematically testing with her whiskers - at 3 or 4am. Ugh! Lucky finally registering her cheeky smirking little face was cute!)

But yes kitties leaving their mum too early is terrible! And for so many other reasons as well. (Other more problematic behavioural issues and their nutrition!!)

    That said...
    Some kitties are sooky-la-las, though

I happen to know for a fact how long my Loopy Schmickles was with his mama for (a little too long if you were to ask her) and although he doesn't suckle from the moment he met my soft furry rug he adores it and will knead it 'til he crashes out, wakes up, does it all again.

You should see the expression on his face if he's watching in the window and sees me hang it on the line. (If you have seen the Ugly Betty episode (4??) where Marc first spies Bettys handbag in the elevator - that is the look...)
