Default Anybody ever used craigslist for roomates?

My friend said she was going to search for a place to live off there. I checked it out for the first time and it just seems so sketchy to me. I mean, I'm sure most the people on there are good people but it leaves so many open holes for perverts and stalkers to get people.

I can't believe the amount of information peoiple give out too. This one lady was advertising her house and gave an address and phone number. And she put her email address on there as well which a yahoo account so somebody could easily look into that and see if shes put it else where on the net to try and find out stuff about her.

    Anyway, pro's con's?

Don't send money to a stranger. Lots of scams go on. Craigslist is ok for finding rooms. You just need to check references carefully. Money changes hands after the contract is signed and you exhange the keys. Never before. Check with the city to see if there have been any code violations. I would check for crime in the area also, but that is hard to do unless the local government has crime stats.

I used to rent rooms out and would always place my address and email and phone depending on how flexible I felt. I would talk to the person first and get a feel for how they sounded and ask them to look at the address from the outside and call me back.

I stopped advertising in the paper and advertised strictly on craiglist. The local paper doubled the ad prices and halved the ad space. And Craigslist generates about 5 times the interest over the paper.

I found my current apartment via craiglist. A nice place, low crime, easy access to work. Some of the rents seemed unrealistically high. I suppose someone rents those out. But not me.

    Try Roomates.com!

You can see the homes, rooms, get a personality description of your prospective roomates, etc. etc

sort of. I found a house to rent with roommates on craigslist- and they were awesome. They just listed what type of person they wanted, and my bf and I replied back and then came over for an interview- I would think that CL gets a lot more hits than roommates.com too.. so you'd have a broader selection- just be smart and don't put your address or any personal info on there other than e-mail or call if you're interested.

I have done that a couple of times. The first time was bad, which was my fault too, I should have researched her more. I was in desperate need of somewhere and took the first place I could afford. She said $350 a month and everything included and I was like i'll take it. The girl turned out to be a total slob, it was a split level house, I was in the downstairs section and the heat barely worked, I would freeze in the shower and it barely worked. Then she had cats and they would shit in my bathtub. I didn't stay long I couldn't take that. Oh yea, afterwards she said I owed her money for bills after she said it was included, I was like fuck you bitch. What bills anyways, there was barely any heat.

The second time was GREAT. I found a really nice roommate at the beach. He was a firefighter so he was hardly ever there. It was a brand new $200,000 2,000 square foot house and I got the whole upstairs, everything really included for $450 a month and I loved it. he was really cool about me being a dancer and everything and he was cool to hang out and drink beers with too when he was around, which was hardly ever so I pretty much had the whole place. Thanks to Mike I moved back to Charlotte to be with him again and I regret letting it go now. All the people I knew from Charlotte heard about it and wanted to come to the beach to stay at my place, lol.

^^^^^^^ It was great. To make 1 little point, he wasn't hot, lol, he was like 40, lol. His fire fighter friends were hot though It was still great though and he was still a really fun, laid back guy. I was 2 miles away from the beach in an awesome house pretty much to myself for $450 a month. I beat myself up in my head over that all the time cause of a stupid man made me lose it, grrrrrrr. I'll never find a deal like that again

I found my housemates in Boston on craigslist. Not having as much luck in NJ. You have to really sift through and read between the lines.

I found someone to take over my lease on CL. Which was scary as hell because if they didn't pay I would, but she did (breaking the lease would require me to pull 5K out of my ass, more than it would cost to just pay the rent). So all was well.

I have the worst luck with room mates, CL or not, so there's really no reason why I wouldn't use it again, what have a got to lose .
