Default I'm super bored of my hair.

I am so sick of my hair. It is down to the tops of my nipples when it's straight, and just a couple inches below my shoulders when it's curly (it's super curly so it shrinks up). I have naturally light brown hair, but when I was 16 I dyed it permanent black (bad mistake) and have been dying it a dark brunette ever since (i haven't dyed it in 4-5 months now though). I straighten and blow dry 2x a week for the last 4 years, so it's a little heat damaged. I want to go light light blonde..... I just saw the movie stardust and claire dances looks so beautiful in it with her blonde hair.

    this is my hair.

It can be super curly, or straight and blah... either way i'm sick of it. The only way i like it it when I have it done for work, straightened, put into hot rollers and curled, and with 21'' curly matching extensions in... but that's too high maintenance and damaging for everyday.

I'm hoping someone with photoshop can show me how blonde would look.

The first picture is how i style it for work minus the hair extensions (it's straightened and then curled so it's not kinky and crazy)

The second picture is straightened and the third picture is naturally curly, but up in chopsticks.

Pic. #1 kicks ass in my book. I do understand what you are saying however. This is why i wear long blonde boring hair.

Claire Danes hair is a nice cut. I really like that. And with it blonde on you....YES!

Looks black to me. Try getting highlights gradually. One visit light colored highlights then the next visit even lighter and so on. Finally, until you've reached a light shade of blonde or brown you like.

^^^ word. Do it gradually with heavy highlights. Make sure to treat your hair with protein (I recommend Redken's Extreme CAT treatment) 3x a week immediately before and after your color services. It will take 3-5 highlights before you start to see the results you want.

DO NOT trust any stylist that says he or she can take you there or close to it in one step. They are lying and will fuck up your hair. Make sure you find a stylist that is very expierienced with color or a colorist. Ask the stylist if he or she drags the decolorizer (aka bleach) scalp to ends with every application... once you get to your desired lightness, the stylist will only need to use bleach on your new outgrowth only, repeted overlapping highlighting applications will result in breakage.

I've said it before and I'll say it again - you can't grow your hair to terminal length if you use chemical dye. You can achieve almost any color with natural colorants - cassia will take you blonde, after concentrated honey treatments (there's a form of peroxide in it).

Chemical dyes are great if that's what you're going for, and they look lovely on some people. But it will DEFINITELY shorten the ultimate length your hair will get to before it breaks/goes terminal.

I swear I'm not being a spoilsport and I wouldn't have said anything if you hadn't said you wanted it as long as possible. As a girl who likes her hair at her knees, I'm a big proponent on long, strong, healthy hair.

Best of luck whatever you decide!

I would definitely like to use natural hair colorings like henna or cassia or honey over any chemical..... i don't know much about coloring your hair with natural things though- how do you use honey? I use all natural organic everything on my body and stopped using chemicals 5 months ago, I want to get it as long as possible.

I don't think getting highlights is an option for me- too expensive and damaging.

Do get the highlights gradually. I am very dark myself and can tell you from experience and being a cosmetology student going from very dark to very light suddenly is extremely damaging to the hair. Anytime you go more than four levels up at a time it's pretty bad. Most reputable salons/stylists won't do it. I am a level 3, which is medium brown. You look to be level 2 which is dark brown. You could get dark blonde or light brown highlights now then wait 8 weeks before getting the light blonde highlights. Your stylist should recommend something similiar to this. Tell him/her you want to gradually go light and go completely light by summer. You'll get use to it that way and it'll be much healthier for your hair.

I know you want it now because I'm the same way but when I did it I was left with a inch of mushy growth in my crown and sides. I've seen girls do it gradually and keep their long locks.

If you want to use more natural haircolor I know Aveda uses Henna and other natural resources for color. Try to find an Aveda lifestyle salon.

Acordding to this site, blonde cannot be acheived with henna or cassia color .-unless you're using one with metallic salts... a big no-no.

I'm a stylist so I am very biased, but trying any dramatic change without professional guidence, especially one that envolves decolorizing your hair, is a bad, bad idea. I can't tell you how many clients come into the salon for color correction because they tried to DIY a big color change. I've also had to turn away clients who are trying to go from natural to professional color because I cannot garuantee color results on previously henna-ed hair; I also refuse to highlight hair previously treated with henna because it's impossible to lift the hair beyond orange.

Anything that lightens the hair will damage it, no matter if it comes from a bottle or your backyard. If you're ultimate goal is having chemical free hair that is as healthy as it can be, you cannot go lighter than your natural haircolor.

Youre right, mia. The cassia is used AFTER the honey - it is an invisible barrier that locks in the color, thickens the hair, and smooths the cuticle. It in itself won't make you blonde.

Use pure, natural honey. Mix it with aloe vera gel or your fave conditioner - the goal is for it to be nice and thick. Pull it on where you want your highlights, let it sit a few hours. The natural peroxide will bleach your hair. From there you can use cassia, alma, or other herbs to either "clear coat" or slightly tint it one way or another on the blond spectrum.

The honey will work similiar to sun in - the more treatments, the lighter you get - it's very slow, very gradual, and you have great control over the precise amount of lightening you want.

    Here's the recipe generally used:

Dilute Honey Lightener- Gradually lightens hair with a natural hydrogen peroxide solution.
    1 part honey
2 Parts conditioner (V05 SKR reportedly works well)

Mix the honey and conditioner and apply to hair. Wrap head with saran wrap and a warm hat. Let sit for 8 hours and rinse. The science: The major antibacterial activity in honey has been found to be due to hydrogen peroxide produced enzymically in the honey. The glucose oxidase enzyme is secreted from the hypopharyngeal gland of the bee into the nectar to assist in the formation of honey from the nectar. The hydrogen peroxide and acidity produced by the reaction: glucose + H2O+ O2 --> gluconic acid + H2O2 serve to preserve the honey. The hydrogen peroxide produced would be of effect as a sterilizing agent only during the ripening of honey. Full-strength honey has a negligible level of hydrogen peroxide because this substance is short-lived in the presence of the transition metal ions and ascorbic acid in honey which catalyses its decomposition to oxygen and water. The enzyme has been found to be practically inactive in full-strength honey, it giving rise to hydrogen peroxide only when the honey is diluted. This is because the acidity produced in the action of the enzyme drops the pH to a point which is too low for the enzyme to work any more. On dilution of honey the activity increases by a factor of 2,500 - 50,000, thus giving a "slow-release" antiseptic at a level which is antibacterial but not tissue-damaging.

I'll PM you some links for other natural options.

Dur... My apologies, I must learn to read posts carefully.

I would still proceed with caution. With any DIY hair color, do a strand test and see if you'll get the desired result before you do your entire head.

^^^ Oh, definitely. Chemical color is more damaging, but at least you have a pro who's done it a billion times. It's just deciding which pro/con tradeoff is best for you.

you look a lot like my cousin. she had blonde hair for a bit when she was in cosmetology school, and it looked awful on her. her complexion just couldn't handle any color of blonde.

i'd say you should go to a good colorist and have them give you your natural color back.

not that i think you need to change a thing.
