    Default Best hair investment?

So I got a few gift certificates to beauty supply stores, and because I love heat styling my hair (I used to do it daily...I'm currently growing it out, so I limit myself now to blowdrying and straightening once a week), I'm looking to upgrade either my dryer or my straightener.

My current straightener was cutting edge at one point. I bought it before ceramic irons were really known; it's a Jilbere ceramic iron, with 3 inch plates, and 30 heat settings. I bought it about four years ago for $120, and it makes my hair really nice and straight and silky feeling, but even though I have cut down drastically how often I heat style, my hair still splits and breaks easily.

My blowdryer is nothing special...some forty dollar Conair dryer from Walmart; it has different heat and power settings.

Which would be the best tool to upgrade, in order to grow out my hair? I know I shouldn't heat style at all to get long hair, but which minimizes damage the most? Buy a top of the line straightener, and keep my dryer, or keep my Jilbere straightener and get a good dryer? Which is the most important to have high quality? I currently can't afford to buy both, just one.

If it matters, I no longer highlight or use permanent dyes; for the past 5 months, I have used only semi-perm dyes, and will continue to do so.

oooooh, tough one. I'd be inclined to say you probably want to replace the flat iron. A high end flat iron with tourmaline (for negative ion output) and ceramic (even heat) will constrict the cuticle and minimize damage. Meanwhile, you can get an inexpensive ionic dryer and use lower heat settings.

I have straight, fine hair, and the best investment I've made since I cut it is:

    Good ceramic ionic hairdryer
Good ceramic round brush with holes in it so the heat can penetrate gently
Quality products, especially heat protecting products
A great hairdresser friend who will show me her techniques so I can copy them as closely as possible daily......

Cost: less than $150. Invest in a great hairdresser too, tip them well and they can teach you how to maintain your hair and keep it looking great on a daily basis.

In case you do decide to get a new dryer, go for the Chi Rocket, its super. Katrine, I wish I could find a good hairdresser. My favorite hairdresser retired and now I can't seem to find anyone that special.

In my opinion a top of the line straightener is the best investment by far.

I get it at my hair salon- it can be hard to come by, but it will completely change the texture of your hair...they have many different formulations for different types of hair- you might want to google it and see which formulation would be right for your hair- I have ordered it from amazon before- looking for a deal- but this stuff is never discounted. Very expensive, but so worth it. I have very long thick curly hair and I dye it light blonde from dark brown, so it keeps my hair very healthy and I am able to keep it long even though it is dyed harshly. Here is the link...

Really stellar care products. And gentle combs/brushes.
