Angry Swimming with the floaties in karma's toilet bowl.

That's what I think I'm doing at the moment.

I'm sure y'all are tired of seeing negative posts about me, but this one is allllmost funny in its sheer badness.

I studied music composition in college. Right before I was kicked out because of my hand condition, my room was broken into, and several thousand dollars worth of stuff stolen. my jewelry box with sentimental gifts from the family, and my MUSIC PORTFOLIO, every recording of my performances and compositions in existance, wer the most valuable things.

SO harsh loss, but I'd grown accustomed to not being able to hum the theme of a piece I wrote and performed. Time does that.

Cue last night. Excitement, new ipod, due to my habit of being hard on mp3's and them breaking really fast. I'm soooooooooo eager I take out my old c omputer, that only halfway works, and export ALLLLLLLLLLL my music onto it. I only copied maybe a third of hte music to my new computer because of hte space concerns.

As I have it on sleep timer and am laying down, what comes on? First one composition of mine, then another! YES! The entire time they were in some unknown folder on the computer that i had no idea i'd copied them to it... I just s tarted crying and freaking.... OH MY GOD thats MY FUCKING MUSIC!!!!!

So then I go to put some more music on the ipod, thinking vaguely of burning a cd of htem off the old computer so they'll be safe. And what happens? My ipod crashes, has to be COMPLETELY reset. All songs erased. So they aren't there, unfortunately. Not a big deal, right? Surely my computer can work long enough to burn ONE CD, right?

Not so. Its finally all set up again, and POOOOOOOOOOOF, "unit needs servicing, will shut off in five minutes" and it won't even load!

So in effect my songs are lost all over again!

Possibly that sounds stupid... but you can't imagine the amount of effort i put into writing/recording those things, or how broken I was when it was stolen... Not to mention the fact that I can't play them now because of my hand problems, to RErecord them, though i thankfully still have hte sheet music from the pieces.

Its just my luck. Can't have my cake and eat it. At least i heard them one more time.

But I'm still tired of my late string of bad luck

    Don't give up yet!

It is very likely that all that data is still recorded there on the hard drive, especially if you have not saved anything new onto it. It might cost you some bucks, but a data recovery expert could probably retrieve it for you.

Mastrodinicus just might be that expert. If not, I bet he can point you in the right direction.

There are external hard drive cases made to fit laptop size hard drives. the hard drive from your laptop could be removed, placed into one of these external cases, then plugged in via a usb cable and read.

Its not a laptop, can that still be done? I wouldn't have a clue of what to remove, it looks like everythings connected!

DON'T take it apart yourself! It takes experience to take computers apart without wrecking them. Here's what happen in data recovery: the hard drive is removed from the computer, and then the hard disk itself is removed from the hard drive. It is installed in another hard drive that is working, and all the data on it is copied onto another drive. Then they start working on restoring the directory if it has been damaged.

That's the most extreme case. In an easier scenario, all that has to happen is to remove the hard drive from your computer and install it into another computer.

Usually, when data is lost, the data is still there. There is a file on the hard drive called the directory which tells the computer where on the hard drive to locate the data for each file. It is not necessarily all in a row, sometimes it is spread all over the drive. When the directory is damaged, the computer can't find the data. But it is still there, unless you saved something new onto the drive and it recorded over the old data.

But DON'T try to do it yourself. You might damage it in the process and lose anything that might be left.

What make and model of computer is it, and what operating system is on it?

Offhand, not exactly sure. Its an emachine, with windows... would need to look up hte make and model. I got a new computer because it wasn't running properly, kept randomly restarting or refusing to turn on, and i htink one ofhte fans was dead-in order to run it for any length of time i had to remove hte casing and put a fan aiming at it...

But from the problems... they DONT seem to be wit h the hard drive(in my uneducated opinion) and i doubt there would be much trouble with the data itself...

Mother boards don't like heat for sure. Yes even with a desk top model the drive could be removed and placed into another computer. maybe install it as a D drive. Then windows could be run from the C drive and boot from there and your files accessed on your old drive which is now a D. Did that make sense?

Anyway, Likely installing your hard drive in a new computer is all you need to do. take about fifteen minutes and a set of screwdrivers.

Find an old computer on freecycle or craigslist. Pull the hard drive from that one and install yours. As long as the old / new system being installed with your hard drive just be sure the motherboard meets the minimum standards for your version of Windows.

What about replacing the fans in your current computer? If excess heat is the issue then yes, it will shut down on its own to prevent damage. Especially any fans on the processor itself.

I spoke to my dad about hte fans, and his consensus was that while it COULD be done, with where the broken fans were situated it would require replacing a ton of other stuff as well? This was months ago, my memory is pretty bad.

I really SHOULD try that though, using hte computer for storage, if i got the hard drive into another computer. I still would be really freaked out to remove anything myself though. I had to install additional RAM in it once, and i nearly had a panic attack i was so nervous! Not to mention figuring exactly WHAT should be removed, and what should be salvaged. I really wish i just had the money to ask a professional, or that I could forget about those songs that were on it...

But my obsessie n ature is getting the better of me.

Hey, the good news is, almost everything can be saved as long as you DON'T TRY TO TURN ON EITHER ANY MORE.

I'm driving right now, but so I can't be too verbose, but I need to know what kind of computer you have and what kind of iPod you have.

I am assuming you have an Apple computer judging by the error, but I want to be sure before I tell you your options.
