Treadmill screws up my back, as does all forms of running. Sigh.

I use the elliptical extensively, but I know what you mean: One doesn't seem to get as much of a workout on them.

By the way, my routine on the elliptical: 15 minutes/random/level 16 (then I hop off to do stretching and core work); back on the elliptical for 30 minutes/random/level 16.

I used to use the elliptical, but I haven't been on one in a few years. The treadmill definitely causes me knee and ankle issues, but I like running, so I stick with it. I'm just gonna have to start taking my boyfriend's Osteo Bi-Flex. I get a better sweat running on the treadmill, I'm not sure why. Maybe I get distracted when my whole row is reading books and magazines and doing crossword puzzles.

I have always preferred the elliptical just because it's less painful. I agree I used to see better/faster results with treadmills. But you have to think about the long run..

I like the Treadmill better - I last longer and just feel like Im getting a better workout all around. For some reason I feel lazy when I use the elliptical because Ill hold onto the arm thingies...

I like the treadmill better. I've tried the elliptical a few times and have hated it. I like lifting my feet off of something.

My ankles can't handle the pressure from running on a treadmill. I say eliptical all the way!

I hate the eleptical. It gives me big quads and pushing the pedals hurts my knees.

I like the elliptical mostly because I feel I can always do a good workout on it even when I'm a bit tired and I find it way too tiring to go for a big run on the treadmill everyday. Having said that however, sometimes i like the treadmill more as well, and generally mix it up or I get too bored.

The treadmill hurts my knees/back too much...I usually do an hour on the elliptical because it doesn't feel like I'm getting as much of a workout as a 1/2 hour of running outside or on a treadmill.

Hmm, seems like I'm the only one here who sweats like crazy and is tired after 5-10 minutes on the elliptical! Maybe I am working out on it too hard? I move my arms on the elliptical too. I can go on the treadmill for much longer without getting so tired and sweaty.

I like the elliptical and don't have knee or ankle issues so a treadmill is fine. the only thing is I find the elliptical safer and I can't afford any work interrupting injuries so elliptical it is for me.

I like to shock my body once in a while and go for a hill filled jog or use the rowing machine for 30 minutes HIIT.

I used to run on the treadmill and then my knee got really messed up (I don't have enough muscle strength to keep my knee cap in place), and I can't run period now. I think it gives allot better results, in the abs and I used to run with hand weights, so it was an all over workout. Also I LOVE the felling you get when you finally break the barrier when your running and it all of a sudden feels like you could run forever..yes....good stuff!

The elliptical doesn't hurt me but I think it's boring and just feels like im running in sand. I like my feet to lift off of things as well. Also the arm things are pointless for me besides gaining balance. Hopefully dancing and the elliptical will strengthen my muscles more so I can run again. The treadmill rocks!

    Agreed.

Use HIIT. You should be changing machines weekly (or more often) for the most results. Otherwise your body gets used to the movements and it's less effective. I usually change up my cardio machines every 3rd day.

I use both because I feel like it works different parts of my legs. I can never do longer than 30 minutes on the eliptical... my feet go numb! Weirdest thing...

Elliptical. Easy on the knees and no shin splints.

Elliptical, easy on the kness, I like the ones with arm motion as well. However it's easier to be lazy for me on the elliptical so that's to be avoided...

Not sure how i missed this thread. I own an older treadmill and love love love it! I walk it. It's the kind that has no power, you have to use your weight to make it move. It's a workout.

treadmill because I feel like the elliptical works my quads much more than the rest of my legs. Just doesn't feel balanced like a treadmill.

I had two surgeries on my right ankle (one to shorten a previously torn ligament and one to remove the stitches the Dr. accidentally left in) so I prefer to use the elliptical. I find running to be painful on my joints, which suffered a long time because I would limp to keep my ankle from hurting and I have flat feet as well.

I agree that running is hard on your feet/joints but I found that once I got fitted for a proper running shoe with the right type of stability/cushioning, I had less pain or issues. I also found that when I focused on developing my running technique, I had less pain.

^^ I completely agree. Once upon a time (meaning before this year) I would only wear Sketcher's to work out. But now I have my first pair of running shoes and it makes a world of difference.

I still haven't tried running for an extended period of time with them though. My joints are a little over-sensitive.

So do you prefer running or the elliptical?
